Dispersion FX coming to iOS - BETA CLOSED

edited January 9 in App Development

Have been exploring ultra-strong dispersion effects found in large real-world objects, such as catenaries, guy wires (TIL these are also simply called “guys” :D), and looked at ways to add tweaks to make it suitable and/or more interesting for music production.

The results are very different from the lab-grown all-pass filter effect, which opens it up for different uses. For example it can completely do away with the “raygun” quality; or not having the low end spread out in time like crazy that would prevent normal use on regular beats (like with other dispersion plugins as you attempt to stack up enough FX instances to get a meaningful amount of dispersion in the midrange, etc.).

Needless to say, it’s also free of the heavy transient smearing artifacts and bad LF performance that come with currently available spectral delays that make it impossible to use them as dispersion FX in transient-heavy situations (so like all drum tracks in existence).

Long story short (and it’s a very long story indeed), right now a percussion-oriented wave dispersion AUv3 is on the horizon.

First and foremost this means looking at smaller time scales, so don't expect anything extreme or wacky out of the box. Though there is nothing stopping you from using it as a building block to build more special FX, especially since it aims to be a zero-latency AUv3.

So... any features on your wishlist regarding this sort of FX?

  • This sounds great! Not sure I understand everything, but just wanted to chime in to say that I love your FXs. Thank you for developing them :)

  • Alan Lamb in a box?

Cheers :) Well dispersion is really what a prism does for light waves.
Wouldn't you know it, the very first image on Light's wikipedia is about dispersion ;)

Thanks for the visual! I think I get it now, looking forward how this will be implemented with sounds :)

Almost... this very plugin is geared more towards practical effects for percussion: basically adding punch without heavy chirp or zap effects, while also not increasing the RMS of course.

But yes in general you can pretty much get there with a good dispersion modeler placed on some feedback delay paths I reckon. I will also not deny nor confirm that that's actually a massive work in progress and may come later next year :)

    Sounds very exciting!

  • I bet the other two or three people here that understand any of this are excited too. 😉

A TestFlight project has been set up. I've added notes to the opening post.
    We're entering the final stretch.

  • Would like to be added

  • Me too

  • It does say in the title 'beta closed'

Egobeats' career as a detective was sadly not the most successful.

There were some mixed messages between the title and the post body. For clarity, I've just removed the first paragraph calling for additional beta testing participants.
