App to audition MIDI drum files, looking for

Several years ago I bought a couple of books with drum patterns. Around the same time, I found a set of MIDI files with these same patterns. I feel ok using these, since I bought the book they came from. But I'm looking for an app that can load a bunch of them into and audition them with one of my many drum apps. Or a drum app that can do this itself.

I have some sequencer AUv3s, and I don't mind getting another one that will make this particular task easier. This seems like a job for Octachron (which I have), but -- so far as I can tell -- Octachron can't load MIDI files.

Does it? Damn. I really need to read the manual.

You'll need to be auditioning the loops in an app that has a full General MIDI drum map implementation. The reason is there are way more possible notes in the GM drum map than there are with most drum apps, and also those drum apps won't always even use the GM drum map.

A good example is Tom hits. There are something like six possible Tom sounds in the GM note map. Most drum apps don't have that many tom sounds. Or, toms may not be on any of the expected notes in the app. The result is you may not hear any of those hits, or they may hit on different sounds than intended.

So, something like Helium, sending to a soundfont player loaded with a full GM drum set, is needed to really get the idea of the midi files' beat. Or, if you can find one, an app that has built-in drums and easy midi file preview. Sorry, I don't know of any.

Then when playing back those files, you'll probably need to do some editing, or remapping with something like mfxConvert, to get them to play well with other drum apps.

  • Thanks for that advice, Wim. The drum MIDI I’m looking at is quite simple, just 4-6 lanes, so almost any drum app will handle it.

Not if it doesn't use the same drum mapping. Are the files GM drum mapped? Many apps don't use it.

  • I just imported the files into Helium’s MIDI bay and pointed the output to Battalion, which uses GM mapping for drums. It worked.
