Help to use Lumbeats Pop Drummer in Cubasis
I am trying to get Lumbeats Pop Drummer AUv3 to work correctly in Cubasis.
As I understand it, I need to go into the MIDI section on the app, then select Notes MIDI Map, then turn on Send Notes.
In Cubasis, I enable the track and hit record. The MIDI is correctly recorded onto the track.
Before playing this back, I then switch Sound Module on, so that only the recorded MIDI is played back, and Pop Drummer doesn't try to play along with the recorded MIDI. Again, this seems to work.
Next, I want to record some more MIDI further along the timeline. So, I switch Sound Module to the off position. But, now Pop Drummer is silent and nothing is recorded.
What am I doing wrong? TIA

I asked Chat GPT and I’ve got it working as a result of this answer:
The correct, reliable workflow in Cubasis
✅ Recommended method: Two-track / two-instance approach
This is the method most Cubasis users settle on.
Track 1: MIDI generator (Pop Drummer – Sound Module OFF)
Add Pop Drummer AUv3 to Track 1
In Pop Drummer:
MIDI → Notes MIDI Map → Send Notes ON
Sound Module OFF
Arm Track 1 and record
This captures Pop Drummer’s generated MIDI
When finished generating MIDI:
Do not use this instance for playback
Think of this track as a MIDI printer.
Track 2: Drum playback (Pop Drummer – Sound Module ON)
Add a second Pop Drummer AUv3 on Track 2
Set:
Sound Module ON
Route MIDI:
Set Track 2’s MIDI input to Track 1
Or simply copy the recorded MIDI from Track 1 to Track 2
This instance:
Plays back recorded MIDI perfectly
Can be edited like any other MIDI drum part
To add more drums later
Go back to Track 1
Record more MIDI further along the timeline
Copy or route that MIDI to Track 2
This avoids ever needing to toggle Sound Module on a single instance.
Well I've thought about getting Pop Drummer for Cubasis and I thought it would be as simple as using Drummer in Logic Pro. I guess I was wrong.
Give the free version a go first. I want to buy the full version, but I have to admit this is putting me off. @LuisMartinez is the workflow described above correct?
I don't think this is so much about how Pop Drummer works as about how Cubasis works with MIDI from plugins. Pop Drummer is just a plugin and it works like any other instrument that can output MIDI, except that it has a switch to move between it playing its own patterns and it responding to inbound MIDI. There's nothing @LuisMartinez can do about how Cubasis works with plugins. Steinberg should be the ones to ask about the preferred workflow.
@BillS - I found the problem. In Cubasis recording settings (accessed by touching the BPM display), you need to enable Punch In and Punch Out under Recording Mode. Then everything works as expected. Draw a clip in where you want the new midi to be recorded first.
I wonder how much time I've spent this week responding to posts with wrong guidance from ChatGPT?
It works fine and is straightforward in Cubasis once the workflow is clear.
@wim once again, you come to the rescue. Thank you so much - I have no idea why that is the solution let alone how you worked it out, but it works and that is all that matters.
It works fine, and is indeed simple in Cubasis once the workflow is clear.
I'm glad it helped. 👍🏼 I was able to work it out as soon as I remembered about how recording in general works in Cubasis. Punch-In/Out is one of my favorite features in Cubasis.
I was a little surprised at how smoothly it did work though. Sometimes working with midi generators in Cubasis is a little confusing to me, but in this case it works just how I would expect it to.
It would be helpful if the various categories, particularly "Pro" could be collapsed. If I'm feeling cheap (default setting), I'd rather not have to scroll past those, though of course I do respect the marketing aspect of it. 😉
Thank you sir.
@wim Alas, since having got it working last night, it seems it’s not working this morning.
Can I just check my workflow:
In Cubasis, create a Pop Drummer track, and in the app open MIDI/Notes MIDI map and ensure Send Notes is on.
Ensure Sound Module is off
Switch Punch in/Punch out both to On in Cubasis
Arm the track, and hit record
After recording, switch Sound Module On so that only the recorded notes are played, and Pop Drummer doesn’t play along ‘live’ with the recorded notes.
To record further down the timeline switch Sound Module off again and ensure punch in/out are on. THIS is where it goes wrong - there’s no sound and nothing gets recorded.
@maxxpower18
Did you draw in an empty clip where you want to record?
@wim I did indeed
Huh. I don't know what to tell you then. 🤷🏼♂️
I only tested it once or twice.
I can't even guess if it's a Cubasis or a Pop Drummer issue.
Thanks anyway. The workaround using two tracks is not ideal but it seems to work. The bigger issue for me is the fact I can’t render a song that includes Pop Drummer to audio (posted separately https://forum.loopypro.com/discussion/67016/lumbeats-pop-drummer-help-with-rendering-to-audio#latest )
