Can I stop iOS auto selecting the last audio device connected?
Can I force the iPad to use one audio interface, IE one that is permanently set to use, rather than always defaulting to the last one connected? For example, I use a USB mixer, but my keyboard has an audio interface BUT it is also the MID controller (same cable) so when I connect it, iOS auto defaults to it and removes the USB mixer.
It also sometimes happens after long periods of inactivity, where one will close down and the iPad reverts to headphone. via the USB-C, it has now headphone jack as such.

iPadOS26 remembers the last used/selected devices on a per app basis and if the devices are present when the app is launched it will select them.
sorry I disagree...it does this even with no apps open. It seems it uses the last audio method (USB or on-board) started. Noth8ng to do with apps.
At least for me iPadOS26 remembers which of my 3 connected interfaces were last used with the apps I regularly use and defaults to using them when launching the apps as long as the devices are still connected.
(the default per-app selection is done in the control-center when the app is running)
What OS version are you using?
I don't know if there is a way to control iOS that way or not, but if you don't intend to use the audio from the keyboard at all, I wonder if you might be able to get around it altogether but inserting a MIDI host in between, like one of the CME devices, something that recognizes the MIDI of the keyboard but that doesn't process audio at all.
Does the keyboard only do MIDI through the USB connection, or does it have MIDI Din or separate ports as well?
26.2
In theory iOS 26.2 will remember audio device preferences but may assume that they are all on when launching apps. If you connect one while the OS is running it may assume you want the most recently connected to be the active one.
Yeah that's what I am asking, it does that. However I want to turn that off and set a "permanent" default audio interface. I am getting to the point where I do not think it is possible
It isn't.
Is there any setting in your keyboard to disable the audio interface? What keyboard is it?
If there's no way to disable the audio output over USB then @EnergyCrush 's idea seems like it would work as long as the device has midi thru.
thanks wim, for both responses.
It's a Numa Compact 2 X SE - very limited in what you can do...
Yes (re energy crush idea) it was something I had already tried, but preferred the USB as I get two ports, only a single over MIDI din.
I have midi interfaces already, so that is not an issue. might have to go that route perhaps. Thanks for confirming it has no such control
thanks, read response above
- good thought though
No problem, I hope you're able to find a solution that gives you the best of both worlds
