Vio=> Kick & Snare (again)

This is the ongoing quest to create a solid, tight, full, embodied - Kick and Snare sound from a violin. Here's my current approach.
THE PART I AM FINE WITH: Recording a clean loop with the violin, and then using a MIDI clip and MIDI bindings to route the sends to 2 different audiobuses. One audiobus turns the audio into a kick drum, and the other audiobus turns the audio into a snare hit.

Here's what I have thus far; crude - and not amazing, but not utterly terrible either

ANY ADVICE?
* Do I really even need an EQ in front of Fosfat?
* Would I be able to improve tonal qualities by putting an EQ after Fosfat?
* Is FAC Maxima really needed, or would the stock compressor with LP be enough to even out the sound level that is fed to Fosfat
* How can I get a more snare-like sound, like a snare with springs?
* Is there another plugin besides Fosfat that I should be trying that does this sort of morphing?
* Does anyone ever use a reverb on a kick? If so, what type?
* What am I forgetting to ask? (don't tell me.....Drambo)

    Sounds cool.

I'm curious why you chose to synthesize the kick and snare rather than just trigger samples.

Perhaps he took inspiration from Teemu’s video?

    Same technique used

The reason I'm asking is this question: "How can I get a more snare like sound?". The answer is different if taken literally, or if taken as "How can I get a more snare like sound with this approach?"

Why synthesize or morph a violin into a drum (of some sort) ~~ rather than just trigger a drum???? I could trigger a drum via MIDI Guitar 3, or Drambo (although I have had issues with Drambo), yes I understand that's an option. Totally valid question.

I "think" it's a live performance or, for lack of a better word, "show" thing.

    • I "kind of" envision playing somewhere, and broadcasting or videocasting my iPad screen. People watching/listening would see me, almost magically, transform - before their very eyes - the violin sound(s) to a drum sound. For me, as I envision this, all of the plugins would be all set up; and the transformation would be a widget or slider that "pulls down" the audio clip fader, whilst "bringing up" the audio bus faders where the audio is being routed to the plugins.
    • I, from a personal experience perspective, am turned off by MIDI instruments. I remember watching a guy play a MIDI guitar about 20 years ago, and he changed presets and made it sound like a banjo. And although tonally speaking it wasn't a bad sounding banjo - he was playing a guitar. I know the banjo, and he was not playing banjo parts, he was playing guitar parts.
    • It "feels" to me, this a more creative approach (very much a matter of opinion) - to "EASE INTO" or "MORPH FROM" the violin sound to the drum sounds.

    at the same time.....

    • I acknowledge this is, at best, a crude and very simplistic "beat"; and in fact even after I get this worked out better - I will use audio clips drum beats and mix those in; gradually or at a certain section of the song. I do this in a number of projects. I call it a bait and switch trick (I'm not actually switching anything), but I lay down an initial audio clip or two; then at some point as I solo, or as I lay down a 3rd audio loop - I also trigger in or bring in with a delay a drum loop; but it seems less noticeable this way. I kind of DETEST, musicians, and especially violinists, who just get up and play to backing tracks. In my personal humble experience, it seems so fake and canned and not "fresh" or "real". I always want to present a facade, that I am creating the backing track that I play to. But of course some of the parts or loops /clips in my "backing track" I did not at all create, I just "eased" them into the background.

Sorry to be so long winded.

  • Sure, so the answer is because triggering a sample is less interesting than synthesizing the sound. I was just flushing out the real question behind "How can I get a more snare like sound?". Because the easy but off-target answer would have been simply "trigger a real snare sample."

That said ... I have no advice on how to do it with that app. 😂
