I Miss Roland Sound Canvas on iOS, What Is/Are Your Replacement App(s)?

Question as described in the title. What sparked this thread was this video...

And @McD 's comment...

I regret not haven’t an iPad that can still use Roland Sound Canvas and other apps that the maker has stopped upgrading.

So, for me personally, I find Korg Module Pro to be the next best thing, but what do you personally use as a replacement for Roland Sound Canvas on iOS? Also, do the Sound Canvas sounds exist in Roland Zenbeats?

    Good advice.

My Casio keyboard started getting buggy and I decided to replace it with one of these:

Roland GO:KEYS 5 Music Creation Keyboard
    61-Note Keyboard
    Built-In Stereo Speakers
Bluetooth Audio/MIDI Support for Music Streaming
    Dark Red
    1000 classic Roland sounds

That's actually pretty cool! Had I not invested in a Dirtywave M8, I'd probably jump on that and get an external USB-C sound module.

I have that app. :) I used it before to use the K.K. Slider soundfont, lol. (That's a musician character in Animal Crossing.)

But yeah, for me, expense is of no concern. Most apps are within my price range if I don't have them already, lol. It's hardware that's of concern, and now that I know GO:Keys is a thing, I'll be saving up for one of those.

Yes. For the 90’s Music Soundcard creation app style of user interface. BS-16i is one the best SF2 players… KQ Sampei
Is another excellent choice for this. I tend to use them as multi-part MIDI file players as I might a SoundBlaster back in the 90’s.
I was a Gravis Ultrasound user in that era of DOS PC software. That led to downloading a lot of “MOD” files but I never learned that scheme of music making.

Interesting. I never did get into computer music creation until MTV Music Generator 2000 (yes there was a PC disc version, not a Playstation emulation), and then FL Studio.

I decided to cave and install Korg Gadget on my iPhone, lol. Plenty of sounds contained within that ecosystem I can use, from Module Pro, to simpler things like the Marseille gadget.

Maybe heading a touch OT, but how smooth is the file loading behaviour of BS-16i. KQ Sampei is… quirky but manageable to load files from global folders.

The GO:KEYS 5 is great, I have one for traveling.

If only Roland gave it a bit better midi implementation it would be phenomenal…

  • @jwmmakerofmusic @McD Just tested and Roland Sound Canvas is still working for me - my phone is up to date.
It's working standalone and loads as an IAA instrument into AUM, and then it can be routed into Cubasis 3, or the DAW of your choosing, probably. (It doesn't show up in the IAA list in Cubasis 3.)

I checked my purchase history, and though it's still there, I seem to be unable to download it (or any app that shows up in my purchase history)! Seems Apple have changed how that works with iOS 26.xx. 🤦‍♂️ Either that, or this hangover I have is more massive than initially thought and I can't for the life of me figure out something obvious. 😂

You're uploading from the "Apps" list, rather than the "Purchase History" list? That seems to be the way.

Nope, trying to load from the Purchase History list. iOS 26 jumbled how Purchase History works. I tried using Google to give me the resolution, but it's not working.

At least for me it's working, just re-downloaded it from the purchased list (11" M1 iPad Pro, iPadOS26.2)...

And here in a window (Too bad it can't be scaled down even more), IAA app being sequencer by Piano Motif in AUM.

Okay, explain to my dumb self how you access the apps page instead of the "purchase history" page. Imagine me being hung over and lost, lol.

Tap on your 'icon' top right in the AppStore then tap Apps and then 'Not On This iPad' to see those you don't have installed, you can also search in that dialogue.

There it is! You rock, mate! Thank you for helping.

  • @Samu (and others), would Xequence 2 be good for controlling Sound Canvas while it's loaded as an IAA in AUM? Or would it suit me better to use as IAA in Cubasis 3?

Considering Sound Canvas is multi-timbral (and if I recall correctly Xequence 2 has some GM/GS preset settings for easy parameter control) I feel it could be better suited for it than Cubasis which can get a bit quirky when routing midi etc.

Try both and see which one 'feels better' to use :)

Good idea mate. :) I will try both. Although I do suspect Xequence 2 with AUM would be better suited for that task at hand.

And I could've sworn I had purchased Xequence 2, but apparently not. I just did now so I can have it on hand. Just gotta watch some tutorials on Youtube to grok it. Seems though it's close to how NS2's piano roll functioned.

  • With Roland's penchant for re-releasing product either re-packaged or "updated", I am surprised they have not tried to cash in on an "updated" version of the SC

Yeah, that surprises me too. I'd be willing to repurchase SC if it came with AUv3 support. I wonder if the Zenbeats dev(s) still frequent(s) this forum. I forgot their handle(s) though.

Thanks for helping tag him mate! I hope he can pass along the info or has some insights. I didn't want to create a whole Roland account just to make a request. 😂

  • If they don't drop an updated Sound Canvas AUv3 I could definitely live with a functional Zenology Pro AUv3 as are replacement as long as it's not tied to some Roland Cloud subscription...

What's the difference between SoundCanvas v/s any Soundfonts, more than Sample Quality?

Every time i use SoundFont Player i'm looking this "bit crushed snes/psx" sound, so.... how much is the difference between them?

and US$29.99 for the app? quite above overall prices from other apps T__T

$29.99 for Roland Sound Canvas? Is it rereleased or something? I think it was $19.99 when I bought it years ago.

  • After messing around between apps, I finally settled on Korg Gadget 3 for the next music projects I'll be making. :) I just created and finished an instrumental for a song in Korg Gadget 3, and used Cubasis 3.8.1 for recording and processing the vocals and mastering the final product! This one will be released on Christmas Day and will serve as the final vocal project I post in 2025. Doesn't mean I won't post instrumental music though before 2025 ends, but yeah.

The trick with Gadget 3 (at least for me personally) is to use my own imported drum samples. The included drum samples in Recife, Bilbao, and London are just a bit shit and aren't punchy enough for my tastes.
