Glad your lunch was in the microwave by then, lol. "Sounds like an end credits song" is exactly why I dubbed this piece as "Soundtrack" rather than "Ambient". I tagged "Ambient" just for good measure (no music puns intended lol).
This one’s my favorite so far, keep it going!!
Thanks so much, mate!
Today's Jamuary...
(Eno-esque Ambient)
So, after my dear friend @rottencat showed me this video...
...I dug into some Frippertronics-styled production with this piece. First, I used AUM to record from Module Pro into Koala Sampler, which was no problem. Just module, followed by AUM's peak limiter to catch any possible peaks, and Koala with pass-through enabled so I could hear what the hell I was doing when recording. 😂 I used one of the American Ivory D pianos, one of the Electric Pianos with some character to it, and one of the Soprano phrases (holy moly that Sorprano voice is amazing!)
These were recorded at uneven lengths, so I could get them out of sync and keep it interesting. When live-recording the piece (I didn't bother using Koala's sequencer), I changed the pitch of the Soprano in whichever ways I felt like doing.
I applied Koala's reverb from the "live effects" rather than the Freeverb in the mixer (the former being shown in the video, which is why I did it that way).
Quite frankly? I was getting tired of Gadget for Ambient. Not because of the lackluster reverb, which is no problem for me to doctor, but everything was just a bit too "in sync". The only way to get variations between the instruments was to use different bar lengths rather than recording in uneven timings, which allows for more spontaneity.
Huge thanks to Yvonne for this. Thank you, my friend. ❤️ I hope you enjoy.
(Dark Ambient/Drone)
Recorded Kiev twice (both times with different settings, the second pass having RealPhase applied to it), and Bleass Megalit once via AUM. Although I think the second pass of Kiev coming in could've been a lot less abrupt. Next Koala experiment, I'll utilize the attack and release settings better for smoother ins and outs. 🫣
(Ambient)
More "Frippertronics". Enjoy, lol.
(Ambient? Soundtrack?)
Now for something a little bit different. I'm not sure to file this under Ambient or Soundtrack, but my initial intention was to make some Brain Eno-esque Ambient, but with Japanese instruments and scales. The instruments were all sampled from Beathawk, except the drone. I used Atoms for that drone. I accidentally recorded the Shakuhachi with the wrong note, but it sounds good pitched down 5 semitones, so not going to fuss about it.
Anyways, enjoy this piece of music.

Very informative video. Even though it feels basic, it is validating seeing others as big as Brian Eno (... and @jwmmakerofmusic
) using the technique! I am just rediscovering Koala these days after having dabbled in Loopy and Drambo and there is sooo much immediacy and fun.
One of my best and most fun recent purchases has been the Radio Unit AUv3. I open up a random radio station from around the world, record 20 seconds into Koala and then just use that as sound source. After getting a bit burnt out doing more complicated stuff, this feels like a breeze of fresh air.
Also, the new chopper feature on a long clip, pitched down and set to playing in random order makes some sweet evolving textures with just 1 note playing in the sequencer. It almost feels like cheating.
Eerie, I like it.
Speaking of ‘Frippertronics’, maybe an idea for a future Jam is to use a few Santa Ana’s with different bar lenghts. Or modulating Santa Ana’s start and end points, etc. Throw on its warm delay and ‘Frip’ away 😎🎸
The chopper feature? I forgot about that tbqh. I'll have to give it a looksee.
Sounds like a cool idea. I'll have to give that a go.
(Dark Ambient)
So I performed a piano gig today and didn't have much time to create anything until afterwards. So I took some sort of machine recording and used PaulXStretch on it. Then I recorded a bass drone (which doesn't come in for a while) and some white noise clicks. Literally, that's all there was to it just to make sure I quickly met my Jamuary challenge today, lol. I'll create something more substantial and better tomorrow. 😂

Hehe, glad you like it, mate.
(Ambient/Soundtrack)
Just a trek through a sandstorm. Created in Koala Sampler. The low drone is Zeeon, the Middle Eastern instruments and low vocals are all sampled from Beathawk, and finally - the wind sound is a field recording downloaded from Freesound. Enjoy. ❤️
Under Statement
I'm curious what makes you connect with this piece?
lol who knows, right place right key.
Best one of the month so far - I really like this one.
Lol, that could jolly well be. 😊
Thanks so kindly mate.
I'm glad you enjoyed this one. Definitely my fave.
Another mindbending odyssey.
So very right-up-my-alley.🙂
I'm so glad to hear that, my friend. ❤️ Thank you.
Nice!
Very calming, I was almost quite expecting to hear some slow rhythmic drums in the background, one great feature of Trek Through A Sandstorm is it completely masked my tinnitus 👍
Mike
Thank you @Pierre118 and @rapidfire ! ❤️ Glad you both liked my music. 😊
Really enjoyed Kabuki and Trek through a sandstorm… more than half way through now Jim !
Thanks for taking time to listen, my friend.
I'm not sure if I'll be doing anything today musicwise. I'm sure I'll get over it though, lol.
(Ambient)
I used a different process to record this piece. Instead of live performing and recording directly within Koala, I recorded this live performance in AUM. I sampled Ravenscroft for the two pianos (one midrange, one high), an acoustic guitar from Beathawk's Baroque pack, and Kiev for the drone.
I didn't sequence the drone and instead just pressed down the button first. I sequenced the two pianos and guitar, with some notes being 100% active, and others at roughly 50% chance of playback. This way there are some melodies which repeat, and some melodies which evolve and play back differently each time.
I also routed the two pianos and guitar to Mixer Buss A so I could fiddle with Koala's filter while keeping the drone playing as-is.
After Koala, I placed Taip for some tape saturation and wobble (no hiss this time), Stratosphere Cloud Reverb (hence why I recorded this piece this way in the first place was to use my favorite Ambient reverb!), and AUM's limiter to catch any possible peaks (of which there were none this time thankfully lol).
Then I imported the performance into Cubasis 3 and mastered it there with my usual chain.
Please do enjoy today's Jamuary entry. ❤️
Tagging @rottencat and @Pierre118 for this one.
(Space Ambient)
A complex drone, a broken melody, what more could you want from Ambient? I don't know, I created this piece and really like it a lot. 😂 I hope you do too!
(Drone Ambient)
So yes, for today's Jamuary I just went with a straight up drone in AUM. I recorded Microwave, Kiev, Iconica Sketch, and Noises into Koala Sampler. I made sure to apply simple EQ to all four so each part would fit the drone better rather than be muddy.
I applied a little bit of Koala's reverb (from the effects section, not the Freeverb). Then after Koala, I placed Alteza, Taip and AUM's limiter to catch any possible peaks (there were none). Then I mastered the live recording in Cubasis 3. Enjoy.
(Soundtrack Ambient)
And now something that's inspired by both "Blade Runner" and "Tron - Legacy". Please do enjoy. ❤️
