Destroying Amen break

I know I’m late to the party but I would like to add some jungle breaks to my track and speed up percussion. What would be the best app or combination of apps to smash those breaks? I have in mind AudioLayer but maybe there is something more. The best if it would be easy and intuitive

Comments

  • If you like Drambo, you could try this thing I built. It's pretty hands-on and I find it intuitive:

    https://patchstorage.com/frankenbreaker/

  • The last version of Koala (you need the samurai extension) include "Chopper". It allows you to play some part of the sample with notes, it is super simple and intuitive.
(it can also play some parts of the sample randomly or according to velocity)

You would think the Amen break app would be the first suggestion, no?

Ah wait, perhaps it is not the first choice for destroying the sound.

Fauvre. Glitch core is also solid af

  • Amen Break generator followed by KoalaFX.

  • Not auv3 but Sector is fantastic for breakbeats

Just as a side note, the amen isn’t probably the best break to “destroy” as it is already so dense, and… well, destroyed pretty much
What I like to do to that particular break is to use a noise gate with low threshold to create gaps in it and make it more breakbeat sounding
Of course the many suggestions above will let you try any number of breaks

  • Thanks for recommended apps, I will look closely into them.

@pedro Could you break down how you (and which app) use/set the noise gate to create the gaps? Is it compressor thing?

  • Just drambo, flexi sampler (amen is a stock preset) and the noise gate does the trick

If you slice it, an amp-envelope triggered together with the slices can be pretty cool, too. If you slice to 8th notes, depending on the length it can change the swing a bit (long decay, the swung notes get quieter, short decay can kill the swing altogether)

  • There is also - Sector, MolliLooper, Egoist, Scatterbrain, MM-1, Loopmix, Flux Pro and Loop Mangler that you could browse etc
btw it’s Fauve not Fauvre as mentioned above just to help you find it easier.

Unless you slice it at the right places and set a midi track, you’ll lose the swing. Straight 16th or 8ths won’t cut it. I rather go raw

Yup. This is precisely the reason why the gate of my amp-envelope goes to the transient detector module. The transient detector is connected to the output of the Noise Gate Env. The Noise Gate is connected to a filter and finally the break.

I’ve had it set up this way since before the latest Drambo update where Beepstreet fixed or updated the Transient Detector module, so the Noise Gate may not be necessary anymore.

But if I were in the mood to do something less Jungly and more Tech-Steppy, I’d make rigid slices like Tyslothtop1.

That’s interesting, gotta try that myself. Thanks for the hint

  • Going a different direction: Sector! Probability, ripping nasty glitches, good fun!

  • Regarding Glitch Core - I like that you can control the chaos of it. It works gr8 w/ drums and vox

  • Egoist is the nuts for this.
