Ralph Towner 1940-2026

Ralph Towner passed away yesterday.

An American classically trained acoustic jazz guitarist (6 and 12 string) , equally at home on the piano (and sometimes French horn) he initially found fame with Oregon and then later as a solo guitarist on the ECM label. He was an excellent composer.

My favourite album of his is Solstice , made with saxophonist Jan Garbarek (another of my inspirations), Eberhard Weber (an innovative bassist with a unique sound) and the superb drummer Jon Christensen.

Sargasso Sea with John Abercrombie is another great album.
Anthem is probably one of the best purely solo albums but I don’t think he ever produced a bad album.

All are well worth a listen!

Definitely a great musician, composer, pianist and guitarist. His book was also very good

  • I recognized the name but couldn’t think from where. Turns out he’s all over music I like, but I haven’t ever checked out his solo work.

    I will now.

  • He was a giant. I caught him live with Oregon one time. Ross Traut and Steve Rodby were the opening act.

I also went to a solo guitar concert Ralph played at McCabe's in LA back in the 80s. I had a terrible toothache, but it stopped hurting during the concert and did not come back until an hour later. His music had an undeniable analgesic effect on me.

    😮

I'll keep his CD handy, just in case ☺️

  • Sorry to hear of Ralph's passing. I heard the name before but didn't listen to his solo works yet. Will check those out soon.

Listening to Blue Sun now. Not a solo album but I love it.
