Multitrack is the lightest weight of the contenders. Doesn't have a ton of features but it's very solid.
Beatmaker will work but it can be a bear to set up
I don't own it but MultiTrackStudio should handle this well and gets lots of love around here.
Cubasis and Auria are the big players both in terms of features, cost and overhead.
Oh, there's also Meteor.
In case it matters, both MultiTrack and Beatmaker are universal apps. MultiTrackStudio, Cubasis, Meteor and Auria are iPad only.
Not sure about Music Studio but NanoStudio will not work for this — it doesn't have audio tracks.
Also, if you don't need something linear, definitely check out LoopyHD. It's what lots of use to capture bits of noodling.
Thanks for all the descriptions Syrupcore, that narrows the list down somewhat...
Hmm, so Multitrack? lightweight etc, sounds good...
I got Loopy HD and like it a lot, but ATM use it for jamming or recording loops etc...
More specifically, iPad only, something that would record tracks, some editing, etc from my apps...If I can help it, I don't want to buy an expensive, complex DAW full of synths+with in-App purchases to make it work...
Thanks
MTD is nice and solid. But not so good for post-production work. Right now Auria LE is on sale for around $12. DOn't really need the IAPs to make it useful, the built in stuff is pretty good and IAP opens up all your other effects for use. Basic workflow would be record in MTD, move the tracks over to Auria for final mix.
Some editing... Multitrack gets you basic cut/copy/move/trim stuff. Can set up a loop region. Has compressor, EQ and global reverb (and a delay? can't remember). More featured than an 8 track tape machine but very much like your first desktop daw. To me, this is its strong point.
Auria is 50% off right now. Has many many more features at the cost of more system overhead. Sure, it has a world of IAPs to tempt you but you do not need any of them to get mixes edited. Comes with high quality basic sound tools as a part of the base package (eq, comp, delay, reverb...).
Absolutely love MultiTrackStudio but it doesn't exactly display a screen that shows waveforms for each track that you can cut and move around. Trust me when I say that is has all that same functionality, but the way it gets there is a little different.
If that's important to you, then MTDAW is still pretty good, and Auria is one of the elite options, if you have a newer iPad.
Thanks everybody and syrup in particular, well I got Multitrack DAW, after reading and uTubing most of them and passing on some because of cost and features and complexity.
MT-Daw seems lightweight, no thrills and frills, and it loads in AB, and give me a 'taste' of functions of a basic DAW on iPad...
Cheers:-)
MTD also implements IAA pretty well.
