Rhodes Custom Keys Challenge - Non-Entry
This is the beginning of a song called “Lately” that I wrote ca. 1974. It is the first song that I ever wrote on a Rhodes, composed in my parent’s basement on my early-70s Rhodes Mark I Suitcase 73. It seemed like a promising beginning, but it has remained unfinished all these years.
Recently I had been testing and comparing various Rhodes plugins and was noodling around with these chords. I decided to record some of it, adding bass, drums, strings/pad, etc. The original song had a vocal melody and lyrics, so I used jazz guitar for the melody, a chance to practice the Wes Montgomery octave style.
A few days later, I noticed that the Rhodes Piano company had recently held a competition inviting artists to compose a score to their Custom Shop trailer, and had recently posted the 10 finalists. I did not participate in the competition. But I noticed that the video was 1 minute 33 seconds long, and the piece of music I had was also exactly 1:33, so I decide to add my music to the video. I used the Rhodes Anthology Sparkletop (chords) and the Rhodes V8 Pro (melody).
So, you cannot vote for my version in the competition, but at least I found a use for this piece of music that I’ve had in my head for some 40 years, and the world can finally hear a bit of this first piece of music I wrote on a Rhodes as a teenager all those years ago.

Well this was super pleasant. ❤️ And a very interesting story as well. I love this type of music.
The quality of the Rhodes and Guitar recording is really nice.
Nice! Made me think of the old Yellow Pages(?) advert featuring Jim Mullen.
Thanks. I fear that if I had actually used this in the competition they may have complained that the guitar keeps things from making the Rhodes the featured focus. But I tried it first with, all Rhodes -- a second Rhodes doing the melody. Also tried it with an ARP Odyssey doing the melody, and neither of those was working. It had to be guitar. That was where things really started to gel. However, I kept the Rhodes melodic track in there too, doubling the guitar melody. Hopefully, it's still Rhodesy enough as a whole to go with the video.
If you had entered and won the competition it could have been a Rhodes to Damascus moment 😎
Nice track !
