Different government agencies necessarily collect information to provide essential services or collect taxes, but the danger comes when the government begins pooling that data and using it for reasons unrelated to the purpose it was collected.
Real ID is another approach to insuring the dominance of the current regime. My wife will need all the documents that make her birth certificate surname match her current documents… after 2 marriages this means 2 seeing licenses in 2 different states… I think the Real ID scheme will fail under it’s own weight and potentially swing the officially registered voter rolls towards a more liberal voting block: you need extra money and the ability to understand instructions to get the ID.
Just getting mad with someone at the DMV won’t get you a Federally approved license.

RealID is scary. However, I think it will be much more subtle. Nowadays, everybody has a cell phone. Those that can't afford one will be given one for free. Cell phones will be used to buy and sell... everything.
“Free” cellphones are typically just payed for by signing a contract for cell services over 2 years or more.
The government doesn’t seem to be involved… but I do expect the surveillance state to ramp up to find anyone that opposes the current administration.
The big ask from the Trump administration is the federal access of state voter rolls. When Musk was running rampant through the government IT systems his people took drums of government databases that have appeared in non-governmental organizations. The hack was coming from “inside the house” making a massive data transfer of our private tax details available for sale.
“Lock them up.”
Not gonna happen when the DOJ is taking orders from a corrupt administration.
The only government organizations that have not been compromised yet are the Fed and SCOTUS… but SCOTUS has been extremely friendly to Trump, IMHO. So, I don’t trust their independence to rule on critical issues of civil rights and the limits of Presidential powers.
