Looking for a way to sequence ChordPolyPad pads in AUM

I'm still a bit new to AUM, I'm keeping things fairly simple cause I don't like switching UIs around really (I have an old iPad Air 2 and the screen is quite small):

I have ChordPolyPad and a synth (Elastic OSC is my current fav) open on screen, I play ChordPolyPad and hit record when I come up with something cool, simple. Now instead of playing ChordPolyPad by hand, sometime I'd like to be able to sequence the pads ahead, so things are a bit more in time, and to prepare pads combos - so I'm looking for a simple tool to do that.

Maybe I'm thinking backward and I should find a tool o record ChordPolyPad's MIDI output? I like sequencing the pads ahead cause it'll keep the strumming intact.

PS. In Live I use this VST called Rolling Sampler, which lets me grab audio I previously played, also wondering if something like that exists on IOS

Thanks for your advice

  • Ok, found out I can just add StepPolyArp and write patterns ChordPolyPad will play (I usually use that combo the other way around)

  • ChordPolyPad's pads can be triggered by MIDI notes. In my quick test, by default notes C4 and upward on the AUM keyboard trigger the pads. That's fine except AUM doesn't have a MIDI recorder or sequencer.

So, you'll need something to do your midi sequencing in. There are many options, and it comes down to personal preferences which is best. You'll get many opinions on that here.

One suggestion is StepBud by Cem Olcay. You would use that to set up the sequence of notes needed to trigger ChordPolyPad's pads.

was actually hoping for something simple and stepbud seems perfect, thanks

So, after messing around with sequencing sequencers for nigh on 10 yrs now... not a humble brag just the results of my trial and error...

I have found that using any number of sequencers to trigger (as @wim says) Chordpolypad works.
My suggestions are that you use Riffer or a similar sequencer that doesn't PLOD along in predictable consistent steps.

To clarify. Riffer and other apps like Musebud or Midisteps or StepBud ( though I personally find its has too much friction - but a LOT flexibility - using Dotted and Triplets ) to give easy flexible sequencing of the TIMING of CHORDS.

Sequencer of choice > Chodpolypad (or Chordjam, Chordroulette, ChordGenerator) > AU Sound Source

    Perfect. Functional. Easy. Flexible.

Here's a Twist... as hinted at by the OP

Generate Chords using which ever tool you choose. Make them to be whatever time duration you want. and ADD Steppoly arp with the Chord Symbol (hamburger icon) selected. Viola you get whatever time division of REPEATED chords from the original chord sequence that is playing.

For instance (I'll choose ChordJam since it can sequence chords itself):

ChordJam > Steppolyarp (hamburger icon selected) -- generate whatever rhythm you want at whatever time division you want > to sound source

This gives you a flexible minimally programable stab at whatever interval you wish.

    BONUS
Take that chord stab and pipe it once more through Steppolyarp (or Bleass Arp, ChaosArp etc) to have little fills of notes from the stabbed chord.

LMK if this isn't clear or if you want a AUM project file

    PS
Use utilities like Mela or similar midi scripts to "control" or limit sequenced spans of notes so they don't soar off in to the subterranean or stratosphere

I’m not OP, and I think I follow, but I’d love an AUM file to look at if you get the chance.

  • I use MidiDreams and Atom 2 all the time for exactly this.

Stepbud is cool, I still use it, but it's got a very annoying flaw. When you try to adjust some things like step lengths in real time there's a kind of zipper noise. The dev is aware of this problem but says he's unable to fix it. So I personally no longer recommend that app to people who don't already have it, if they care about things always sounding good while tweaking on the fly.
