My iPhone 4S sounds noticeably worse than my iPad 2

I recently noticed this, so I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced it. When compared to my iPad 2, my iPhone 4S sounds less clear, almost muffled, with exaggerated bass. I've compared tracks from each device's email, AudioShare, and SoundCloud streams. Could the headphone jack be dirty or something like that? I tested both through my Focusrite 2i2, and I find no discernible difference between them through that. I have both devices on iOS 7.1.2.

Comments

  • My iPhone 5 is definitely quieter than my iPad Air when hooked up to an external source. No doubt someone more technical can comment on this with more authority, but the headphone outputs for iPhone and iPad are definitely different in my experience.

  • Thanks for some clarification. I like to test mixes in my car using my phone and a cable plugged into the headphone jack and noticed my last mix lost something. I never noticed the difference before, though. This seems like something new with my phone. I have to test with some of the other devices in my house.

  • Get yourself a headphone amp, ipad 2 had a great set up, not so great on the products between 2 and 6. Look at Fiio.

  • @WMWM. Thanks for the info and the Fiio suggestion.

  • Sure thing man, I'm no "expert" on amps and cans, but this gie is a great source for info http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/02/headphone-amp-impedance.html?m=1 his write up on the behringer uca202, it's hilarious and true.

It seems the data and opinions vary quite abit on the exact specs of the line out.
