Does Cold Have an Effect on iPad Air 2 Battery Performance?

Hi. Every night I turn down the heat to save money and my iPad Air 2 is in a cold detached from my house. It's 100% charge drops to 86%. In the morning. I've got everything turned off thanks to a previous thread. Is the cold effecting my iPad's battery? Thanks.

  • Try going to Settings/General/Battery Usage - that will show you what apps used the most battery percentage in the last 24 hours. I had a rogue app that was draining massive chunks of power, even in the background during standby for some reason. Worth a look.

  • Thanks guys for the tips. I'll move my iPad to a warm. I checked the battery usage under general setting and found some weird stuff. It said in the last 24 hours iSem and Arp Pro used up 30% of the battery on Air Play, even though I haven't ran either app in weeks let alone Air Play! I checked my multitask bar and neither app was in there. Also I have background usage turned off. How is this possible?

  • IAA background glitch?

  • The main problem combining cold and idevice usage (internal heat) could be condensation, so be careful. Well, extreme conditions, of course.

    +1

  • Just soft reboot the machine, it should flush all the fairy gremlins out of the system.

  • Yep cold alters a batteries performance and as @fjcblanco says beware condensation and if the temperature is going from extremes it could effect circuit board etc..test humidity on a drinking glass see if there's any condensation. BTW cold effects MY batteries too, and I'm not on about my iPad.

  • Thanks for the replies. I went out for a meeting that lasted a few hours and my battery dropped 30%! I'll try a reboot.

  • "Like humans, batteries function best at room temperature"

    (from this page http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/discharging_at_high_and_low_temperatures )

  • Cold does reduce available battery charge, but I'd bet there's some IAA weirdness. If an app gets opened through IAA, it may not show up in the task bar, and it might not shut down the audio session when you stop using it (meaning, it keeps draining the battery). The only solution I've found is to make sure that if I use an IAA synth, I bring it into the foreground at least once, so that it'll show up in the task bar (and can then be killed).

  • I'd agree 30% that's a little drastic for temperature, do as @SecretBaseDesign suggest, or as I'm forgetful use a Memory Cleaner, I use SYS-Activity, it closes what's going on in the background behind the 'scenes', if that fails it may be a hardware fault, batteries don't last forever unfortunately, and when failing the time they remain charged falls quite drastically.

  • If you have the midi bridge app tip is to open it to see what IAA apps are running then shut them down after a IAA session.

  • @Jumpercollins, I have got MidiBridge, thanks for the tip, I will be trying that.

  • Interesting ... I'm still having problems with the battery draining when not turned on. I have app background refresh turned off yet Gadget is at 50% on the battery usage page even though I hardly used it. I never had this problem on the iPad 3.

  • Sounds like I was in a similar boat to you so I feel your pain on this. My battery was draining on my iPad Air 2, way worse than my old iPad2 ever was. As I mentioned, on one occasion I used the battery usage function and found that the M3000HD app had drained nearly 70% of my battery overnight even though I hadnt used it. I also made sure I had all the usual battery draining functions turned off like background refresh etc.
My house is also cold so that could be a common factor in this.
Thing is for me, that wasn't my main worry at the time as my pad was making horrible loud "popping" noises at random intervals, a bit like static discharge noise, sometimes when powering up, shutting down, sometimes when typing etc.
Apple said there was no known "popping" problem but when I looked on their discussion forums it was packed with people all experiencing the same issue. Long story short, I eventually swapped mine for a new unit and its been fine since, no popping and normal battery performance. I pre-ordered mine so it was likely one of the first batch made, I do wonder if the first batch was dodgy. Could have just been bad luck.
Anyway, if you notice any popping noises or you're not satisfied with the battery performance, take it into an Apple store for them to check out. Good luck.

@NathanJonTillnet Thanks that's good to know. I had sucess keeping my charge at 100% overnight. I had to close every single app that was on my multitasking bar, even ones that were in hibernation. Apparently turning off app background refresh does not work on the iPad Air 2. Thanks @SecretBaseDesign for the tip.

Interesting I never had problems on my iPad 3 with apps daraining battery on the multitasking bar. Must be an iOS8 thing.

  • @knewspeak Thanks I downloaded Sys Activity
