MidiSequencer v1.10 submitted - new fx, per step probability, swing, humanise, midi thru
As cyber monday draws to a close, well here in chilly UK that is...
MidiSequencer V1.10 submitted to Apple. This is what you get to play with next week for no extra charge:
Ability to be able to Cycle reset on numbered jumps.
Linked controls - you now have an option to maintain the interval when moving all sliders (before scale transpose would shift this)
Improved audio usage (preferred framerate & no measurements) - even though you don't hear any audio!
1/x clock divided tempos now show to 2 dp.
New FX : Ostinato - like a chord with a single note, or a sub osc note.
Ability to filter output at global (options) or device level : Notes, CC's or FX notes - e.g. send step note to Animoog & fx echo notes to Magellan.
Midi Thru (Notes & CC's) - will forward these to all active outputs.
Midi Thru FX - midi note in will 'play' a dummy step with fx to all active outputs - use this to add echo to a keyboard connected to the input.
Reworked Devices panel - to make it clearer to work with.
Added %probability per step. Use the 16 controls to draw (works in addition to the fx one).
Added %swing per step - with option to work on odd steps too (normally it's even ones). Drawable.
Added %humanise per step - %chance step will use humanise pitch or vel. Drawable. Really should be called variation.
Humanise pitch - also inhuman range allowed - will generate random pitch variation in selected semitone range (0..127)
Humanise velocity - for variations in loudness (0..127).
Latest Audiobus SDK 2.1.5
Audiobus presets force Launch when loading (would be at Main menu otherwise).
Reworked Key inversion - plus new pop-up for it.
Bug fixes to fx etc.
Bug fix of shift L or R.
Improvements to interface.
Performance improvements on ipad2 through to air 2.
Probably some other things....
enjoy....
Comments
forgot to add..
per step disable of fx - to allow you to interleave fx with normal steps...
That's in the photo on the RHS....
Interesting. I haven't really worked so much with midi, other than the occasional edit I would do in cubasis. But I like your UI and will do some more research.
Looking good, Tony! The last update was pretty ambitious, but I think this one will really help some of those new probability features come to life with adjusting and humanizing things per step. Really love the way this app has taken a simple, vintage interface and added all kinds of depth underneath it (chords, effects, probability, scale-specific drawing, etc.). Thanks!
Hey, Tony, when do you sleep?
Too cold in Blighty for sleep...
Wow! And I got this on sale. I feel like I'm ripping off the dev.
Wow. Thanks, Tony!
Great sequencer, I could not resist the FX add on, well worth the pennies, also great manual.
Runs smooth with MidiBus In AB.
My favourite sequencer ATM.
Good luck in future development ;-)
+kgmessier. I got it in the sale too.
I'm really enjoying playing with this app. The probability stuff is really interesting and the lock to scale drawing is so useful.
Is it restricted to a pattern of just one bar long (no chaining of bars or anything?)? I assume so but I thought i'd ask. 2 or even 4 bars would be quite useful.
There are quite a few really good Arp-Sequencers out there, this being one, but an oft overlooked one is Arpist, a little 'different' but you can have multiple bars, it's one of my favourites.
Have it. Never used it
@Matt - one sequence only, you can dynamically load other sequences (using the pF panel slots - up to 40 of these).
The next version will feature full visual song/pattern mode better suited for this, with complex logic for you to define how patterns are chained/scaled/transposed etc.
Thanks. That cool. So I'll look into pF panel slots. Presume I can trigger these via midi in to midiSequencer?
@Matt yes - CC32 is used. There is a button on the Options panel to enable/disable this (incase you want CC32 for something else).
It will also use Cycle - which means it will load the snapshot for you at the end of a cycle (a cycle being step 16 or a R or Rx step and now optionally a numbered step).
The idea is you setup all your sequences you want in a song in one of the 40 snapshot slots, then use the Pf panel to load them in (immediately or on cycle reset or via automation).
@stormjh1 - don't use the %probability much myself, but the humanise can create some nice variations to sequences.
Later I may expand it to include time and more randomise formulas (so not just random 0 to 100% but some sort of formula you can enter).
@Johns, wish I could do this full time.... but so many indie developers have day jobs too...
That sound pretty good re Pf stuff.
So very simply, could I get it to automatically play 4 bars in a row (the first 4 panel slots?) and then repeat ... all inside the app or would I need send it midi for this?
90% of the time that's probably all I'd want to do.
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 You'll need an external midi source to do that.
yes, you would need something to send midi CC32 with data = 1, then 2, then 3, then 4.
If you use data values with +40 (say 41..81) it will also load in controls (fx, CC's, tempo, transpose etc).
todo this manually, define your 4 slots 1, 2, 3, 4. Enable cycle, press play, then when one of the sequences is playing, load another slot and it will load when it gets to the end.
This will be all so much easier with song/pattern mode
Tony, as you're putting together song mode, I want to sneak in a request: If possible/practical, please try to account for the situation when you have a song with say 24 patterns but want to be able to concentrate on the chorus section only. That is, please make it easy for us to loop sub-sections of the song of variable length—my chorus may only be one measure or it might be 8 sequences strung together. Cheers!
@syrupcore - yes I'm also thinking of music sections rather than nameless collection of squares. If I group them and allow you to name them, then you can focus on just one section and also repeat a chorus say at a different setting (e.g. transposed).
Some hardware sequencers use the concept of template patterns (just notes, rhythmns, etc) so each pattern can be cookie cut to another by just changing some parameters (e.g. tempo or withOrnamentation)....
Awesome. Thank you!

Great ideas!

Yes. Yes. And, why not, yes! Not enough ability in music apps generally to type in things about the bits of the pieces amongst all the music bits (forgive the jargon). Let us NAME the beasts and thereafter will we have dominion over them. And so forth.
This is one of the few apps out there where I really need to read the manual to figure it all out... and that's not a bad thing. You've really packed in the features.
