Audiobus Live Use Question

edited December 2014 in General App Discussion

Hi there,
Is there a way to use Audiobus to access different synth patches on the fly among different apps during a live set?
Thanks.

  • @ramban, Hi, I would also like to know if this is possible, because I plan to use my iPad live, but I would think, even though AB supports state saving the synths-effects would also need to, and then the problem would be the way to eject them from the AB chain. But let's ask again.

  • You should be able to use state saving in this instance, although the apps used must support state saving. I don't believe it will be a problem ejecting unused apps from the chain as you load in a new state, but they will continue to run in the background, which can impact available RAM, and possibly produce some unwanted audio. It would certainly be best to test all that out beforehand. Also, there will probably be a short delay as you load up a new state.

^^ what he said. Your best bet is to choose a few apps that are reliable and light on memory and learn how to work with them. Simplicity is your best friend. What IOS version are you running?

  • @funjunkie27 it's the "produce some unwanted audio" that mostly worries me, I have seen it's effects and when Doug is using it on videos. It would be nice if apps muted the mic input when they are ejected from the chain, but as a work-around I may have to use a mini-mixer.

@supadom latest iOS version on Mini Retina.

  • Not sure what's the current situation with audiobus on ios8 but last time I checked it wasn't pretty. Basically it seems like the situation is quite buggy which probably isn't ideal for live use. I guess you best bet is to get testing and see what works for you, especially with your preferred workflow. If you want to use varied synth sounds you're best to choose one synth that does a broad range of stuff and accepts program change messages for on the fly patch switching. One such synth, Thor unfortunately doesn't respond to PC messages.

  • @supadom, it's got better, a lot of developers seem to have fixed a lot of bugs, but it can still be a pain sometimes and of course, I don't plan to go crazy running lots of 'stuff', hope to use samplr though, I love the thing. And thanks guys for the tips, I'll be trying many over the next few weeks, before I get back out.

  • Mmmmm...just thought, my fellow band member has a hardware midi sequencer, but it's not really 'fit for purpose' live, I've been trying to convince him to move over a little more to iOS, do you have any recommendations for a sequencer, good midi implementation to control external hardware, sync, and to control blocks/scenes/tracks on the fly. And again thanks.

  • Some synth apps support midi program changes which you could trigger from your keyboard or from a foreground midi control surface type app. There are threads here that list apps that support midi program change if you use the search box. Thumbjam, Magellan, NanoStudio (eden) and Sunrizer off the top of my head.

  • Thanks, everyone for the tips and comments. I'm going to buy the iPad air 2 and a few synths and see how it goes (I have a macbook pro and logic right now), and this will be my first iPad. I play in a rock band so there's a little more time in between songs to get to the next song. From what info I've gathered, Korg Module has a setlist function where you can have a list of the patches you want to access. And as funjunkie and knewspeak said, the "saving state" feature in Audiobus might come in handy for the synths that support it. Related question: is a program like iMidipatchbay something that can do what saved state does, or is it for some other completely different use?
