The essence of the Big Sound

How do you think the gigantic pads we hear in arists like Volkor X and Carpenter Brut are produced? They're not complex. They're either analog or very good VA. But they're huge. I assume a lot of it is effects, but with what kind of control? I mean, you can't just jam a supersaw through a Strymon. The tails would conflict too much. There's a specificity to the technique that I'm curious about.

Thoughts?

The first track of Volkor X's that really made me sit up and say "holy crap, this is a sound" was "Godwave Rises": https://volkorx.bandcamp.com/album/godwave-rises

The one that captivates me now is "One With the Void": https://volkorx.bandcamp.com/track/one-with-the-void-2

The back-to-back of Carpenter Brut's "Day Stalker/Night Prowler", which can be found on this album: https://carpenterbrut.bandcamp.com/album/leather-terror absolutely blew my socks off in the live version filmed at Hellfest:

  • I've done synth sounds like that before. Basically a very good supersaw VA. Octave bass. And judging by the initial sound on Volkor X's "Godwave", I think it was slammed hard with a brickwall limiter. Maybe a touch of saturation to taste before the limiter.

Also, now that I listen to the tracks more critically, rather than just in slack-jawed awe, a metric buttload of layering. Many tracks, all in the same general spectral area but with relevant differences, arppegiating, padding, leading, bassing... just gobs of it.

Exactly. Lots of layering too. :) Also this may help...

  • Then again, upon some reflection, I remember this track I made in Gadget.

I used iPolysix (Pompeii) and iMono/Poly (Montpellier) for those meaty synth sounds. There are quite a few meaty AUv3 synths out there, and I hope someday Korg will give at iMono/Poly and iPolysix the AUv3 treatment.
