Adding Synology folders to Koala, Drambo, etc

Koala and Drambo let you add folders to their built-in browsers, which works great with Dropbox and iCloud. But I can't add folders from my Synology server. I can browse to the folders, but I the button to add them is always greyed out.

Any ideas why? It's not just these apps. It's all apps that can add folders.

Comments

  • Dropbox and iCloud have file providers for iOS. How are you attaching to the Synthology server?

I was able to attach an SMB share to Koala just now.

I don’t think I understand what you’re trying to do in Drambo as far as “adding a location”. I’m able to import folders from SMB shares though.

My understanding is that this is an OS limitation related to the way that file system references are handled. You can't favorite locations on Synology or many other network servers, either (unfortunately).

This is what I do all the time, ie. directly mount/attach the Synology NAS (or my Mac) using regular SMB in the Files.app.
Never been a fan of the Synology Apps...

SMB shares attach fine in my recent tests.

Koala can add network folders and sub-folders as locations in its sample browser. Drambo can import samples. Both wor in standalone and as a plugin in Loopy Pro.

Wow! That's great news. Something changed since I last tried this. I just checked and Koala is letting me add a folder from my Synology NAS and the link still works after reboot as long as the server is available. I tried under iOS 18.

Yeah, I thought I remembered it didn’t work too, but tried just to be sure, and to my surprise, it worked. iOS 26 (SMB share on Raspberry Pi server).

The Synology Drive app puts a file provider in the Files sidebar.

I was able to attach an SMB share to Koala just now.

I’ll give that a go. The advantage of Synology Drive is that it can sync a folder from the server to the iPad, and the iPad folder is available offline.

FWIW, I don't use Synology drive. I have the NAS mounted as a simple network share.

I think I used the wrong terminology. AudioShare is a File Provider and it has the same limitations on folders. Dropbox must be different in some way if you can attach folders from it. I haven't tried.

iCloud, of course, has even tighter integration.

Would it make sense then to set up a local folder with sync to the Synology folder, then add the local to your apps? Sorry, I'm not familiar with Synology at all.

That’s the problem. The apps don’t let me add Synology’s synced folder. I’ll try the SMB method for now. It’s not like I leave the house much anyway, and then I can just slum it and use drag-and-drop from the files app.

I didn’t realize AudioShare was also limited in this way.

I’m trying to stop using Apple’s services, but iCloud definitely has some advantages, especially now you can keep whole folders downloaded on iPadOS.
