64gb iPad not enough?
I have about 6-7gb of free space on my Gen 10 64gb iPad. I only use it for music related stuff, nothing else.
I’ve noticed recently that Loopy Pro is struggling to run projects, particularly if there is multiple long loops with effects on each on loop. It’s especially noticeable with the sequencer.
I’m concerned that my iPad doesn’t have enough storage space.

Not having enough storage space causes all kinds of issues and is never good. 64GB is definitely challenging when it comes to managing audio and video files, which take up lots of storage.
That said, storage shouldn't normally affect processing power. But Loopy does swap from disk. If the iPad is struggling to manage disk swapping due to lack of space, yes, it's likely to choke.
One way to test would be to temporarily free up significant space. One way to do that is to "offload" programs. If you look in
iPadOS Settings > General > iPad Storageyou'll see a list of apps and the storage they're taking up. You'll seeOffload Unused Apps. Do not turn that on. Do look for apps that are using a lot of space, tap them, and look atApp Size. That space (not Documents and Data) can be freed up by tapping Offload App. You won't lose data or settings. When your test is done, tapping the app icon on the Home Screen will re-download the app. Some apps let you delete individual files, such as large videos as well there. That is permanent data removal though, so be careful.
It's not a foregone conclusion that low data space is causing your issues. Testing is the only way to be sure.
I'd suspect the processor memory more than storage space. Your iPad 10 has 4 GB memory, which ought to be plenty. Maybe there are other apps clogging memory. Does it help to force-quit other apps and restart (power off) the iPad?
Unfortunately probably not, also on top of the actual storage space, you also have to be aware of the ram/memory aka the processing power your device has, typically the more you have of both the better, especially when using your device for music production.
I’m sure you can make 64 gb of storage work to some degree, but it sounds like this might be more of a processing power issue, then storage space. Large projects take lots of processing power to run everything smoothly. I’m not sure how many cores, or what chip the iPad 10 has, but it sounds like you are reaching it’s ceiling of processing capability.
I agree with @wim here. It is generally said that these devices starts to struggle when your free storage is less than about 10 % of total capacity. My 128 GB device has been doing fine since 2018, but now that I’ve hit below 8 GB free space I experience all kinds of sluggish performances, in apps that never had such problems prior to this. System-controlled disk swapping issues is likely the culprit, outside of individual app developer control.
64 gb!? 😬🥶 That's not nearly enough storage for me, with all my audio samples and romplers and shit. Let alone the fact I love to create longform Ambient music which eats up a lot of space very quickly.
Think it could be high time to upgrade to an iPad with at least 512gb space. (Even at that it's not enough for me lol.)
I also do a lot of improv ambient-esque music, so loopy freaking out is kind of frustrating. Particularly as I’m using it to record sets and then piece together songs using the sequencer.
I do offload almost everything I can to iCloud or a flash drive, particularly big music files.
Looking at my storage so much of it is taken up by photos and message attachments. My phone and laptop are also synced to the iCloud, so I’m going to turn off iCloud Photos and delete all of the photos and message attachments. That should give me a lot more space.
Good idea. I really hate that photos and messages take up so many GBs. That's ridiculous of Apple. But, I swear, my vast expansive sample collection is vast and more than 100GB in size itself. From "Sounds of KSHMR" volumes 1-5, Black Octopus' "Leviathan" I-IV, complete Samples from Mars collection, KB6, Magix Music Maker samples that are over 25 years old, etc. 🤣 And that's just the samples alone. Romplers like Module Pro, Beathawk, and Pure Synth Platinum suck up a lot of space too.
Most of the sample collection I don't use in Ambient music to be fair, and if you only produce Ambient, 256gb could be the sweet spot for you.
But me, I'm a bit of a powerhouse producer who can produce in most any genre imaginable.
Yeah, with that little space, you’ll likely need to do the ‘backup and delete dance’ and just have a few projects going at any one time to keep things running smoothly. (And that’s why I, like others after a similar experiences, have bitten the bullet to pay Apple’s ridiculous prices for extra storage: I have 1TB in my new m5 iPad Pro, and it’s wonderful to have everything in the world installed, with 300 gigs of samples, and still have 400 gigs available, with absolutely painless delete decisions available if I ever need to make room because I’ve got so much crap on the device I don’t really need.
I highly recommend picking up a used device with 512GB+ of storage since space will prove to be a bigger quality of life improvement over a faster CPU that is not needed that often…
I completely agree. I made a huge mistake when I bought my first iPad (M1 Air) and told myself that 64GB would surely be enough. After a few months, I knew I was wrong, and even fiddling around with MicroSD cards didn’t help. Two years later, I bought an M5 Pro with 1TB, and now I’m all set.
