Tonebank by Node Audio (Released on iOS)

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tonebank/id6759180810
Tonebank: Afro-Harmonic Sequencer is an AUv3 intelligent MIDI note generator that helps you create and evolve melodies, basslines and multi-part textures with built-in groove and structural strength.
Rather than relying on simplistic arpeggios or random generation, Tonebank improvises inside rhythmically patterned harmonic loops - bringing logic derived from traditional African music to the modern producer's workflow.
Tonebank was developed in collaboration a professor at the Royal Academy of Music, drawing on decades of research and direct collaboration with master musicians from across Africa.
The plugin encodes principles found in the music of xylophones, harps, kalimbas and vocal polyphony: solid rhythmic formulae, symmetric harmonic sequences, complex swing patterns and alternative tuning systems.
Multiple instances of Tonebank share a common harmonic and rhythmic grid, so every instrument in your project plays within the same musical structure. This creates the kind of conversational interplay — call and response, complementary roles, groove coherence - that is fundamental to many African musical traditions, and that makes tracks feel alive.
With the ability to define custom harmonies, Tonebank brings harmonic coherence to all styles of music.
Key Features:
• 16 built-in harmonic systems (pentatonic, hexatonic, heptatonic and overtone-based) plus custom user-defined harmonies
• Loop mode - intelligent arpeggiator with control over density, pitch variance, rhythmic tension and velocity
• Melody mode - generates phrases mimicking spoken and sung language patterns with natural phrasing and rests
• Custom Harmony editor — add your own chords and harmonies into Tonebank
• Pitch Sliders - direct visual control of every note in a sequence, fully automatable
• MIDI Tonic control - change key in real time via MIDI input
• Tie notes - create slides, glides and portamento effects
• Custom Clave editor — define your own rhythmic frameworks
• Multiple clave and swing patterns including asymmetric metres and micro-timing variations
• Alternative tunings - EDO, just intonation and harmonic tunings with MPE support
• Multi-instance synchronisation — build musical conversations between instruments
• Generate / Freeze - lock patterns you love, or let them evolve
• DAW sync with selectable tempo ratios
• Record MIDI output for editing in your project

This looks very interesting, but can't really figure out whether the iOS version is AUv3 or only stand-alone.
It doesn't say anything about this, but seems to be a plugin on Macs. Anybody managed to figure this out?
(Stand-alone isn't an issue for me in itself, but then you can only run one instance at a time, where this seems to lean into the benefits of running multiple instances, which would need AUv3.)
Interesting "conversation" feature:

So cool, almost like a lil jam buddy in your pocket!
It’s AUv3
It does look interesting. I ain’t buying until their website comes back online though.
This? https://node.audio/
It works for me.
Yep works fine!
My main walkthrough:
Thanks. When I try to use the “developer website” link on the AppStore page, it comes back with the “server cannot be found” message. This: https://note.audio/products/tonebank (copied from AppStore page)
Thanks - and great!
Weird it is not mentioned in the App Store description.
Seems to be a typo (note instead of node)...
oh crap - typo in the link, thanks for pointing that out! fixing now...
OK, thanks - I will also update the description to clarify this. AUv3 only. At some point we may create a standalone but to make that really good it would essentially become a kind of groovebox, so deferring that until later this year!
Keeping an eye on this one. IPAD only.
That sounds good. And my worry was more whether it wasn't AUv3!
It makes totally sense not being stand-alone.
(Have just bought it, and look forward to playing around with it in AUM.)
@elemental Could this also be used for regular drums, or is it just for melodic instruments? I saw some demos on your YT channel, but there isn't an example like that there.
It can be used for drums, but it's not designed for that. There is another plugin in prototype stage for that purpose.
Saying that, I have used it for shakers for example, where every MIDI note number triggers the same sample, so you can just use the density, accent and swing settings to create patterns.
And I know people who've used it for drums with interesting results, it's just not so predictable.
Thanks, I'm looking forward to mentioned another "drum" plugin.
Ah, ok 👍
Well then. It’s confirmed an AUV3, check.
Their website is for real (only a small typo in the link), Check.
Looks interesting! Check!
And the developer is responsive, and an actual real person posting here on the forums, check!
Thanks for checking in @elemental 🙂
Purchased!
Hmm, getting some pretty heavy DSP hits in AUM with my initial testing, just using a single instance and Verve piano for the instrument.
@elemental
Thanks for the report. I'll investigate this week.
Same, great great plugin, but it's surprisingly hard on dsp at times
The next update should address the DSP issues, as well as long-press on some of the controls which use right-click on desktop.
Currently waiting for review by Apple (v2.0.2)
Just auv3, no standalone?
Wow... I need to load 2 (or more instances) and start tweaking the one (or more) midi clocks to be offset in AUM to get even more polyrhythmic capability. Even alingments like 0.5, 0.25 or 0.666 (which will drift slowly apart from 4 against 3) can make polyrhythmic patterns that save a lot of editing work and are tuned by ear in realitme as you tweak the midi clock divider/multiplier to arrive at a perfect arrangement.
This would be powerful for the developer to consider since only AUM supports hacking of the midi clock for AUv3's and there are so many exprimentors here that want to generate unpredictable patterns that no one could consider dance music.
Yes for now. I could make a standalone quite easily but my assumption is that it wouldn’t be that useful, as a MIDI generator, but maybe it would be useful to some folks?
As noted above, my vision for the standalone is a multi part groovebox with built in sounds, plugin hosting etc, and proper support for drums. But that requires a fair bit of work.
Please can you clarify what you mean? I’m not sure what it is you’re asking for. I’m intrigued.
Some people might like standalone actually, because they might use their iPad as a midi module, sending that midi to another iPad, a desktop or hardware etc, and prefer not to have to load it into a host. Very nice plugin btw, well done!
You don’t need to change a thing… AUM lets the user divide or multiply the MIDIO clock BPM rate in decimal increments like 0.2 and with two instances I can make these micro-polyrhythmic outputs. Most setting will just make chaos but some key settings will produce polyrhythms that align periodically if that the users intent or just fight for where the actual metronome is. It’s like being able to speed up or slow down AUv3’s an a per app basis. AUM calls it the “clock ratio/clock factor”:
While it doesn't have as many options as AUM, tho, Tonebank does already have multiply/divide options. You'd need to unlink the various instance though to get those set up differently for each instance, as they're 'global' controls.
That might be the best option for most since the fractions offered in the menus make the polyrhythmic results very clear since they are expressed as basic fractions while the AUM approach is better for the pure chaos agent that wants to obscure the timing relationship in increments of 0.001 with fine grain controls. I’m curious to see what matching 2 instances that slowly drift apart over minutes as the coherence between their clocks goes from inaudible to incoherent. Will it sound like a slowly emerging echo/delay effect that can be percieved as such… definately worth a purchase and a few hours of experimentation to find an effect that could have been hacked in a Mozaic script by slowly adding increasing delays to every midi event… but maybe I can attach a knobs to the AUM clock factors of a couple instances and just continue to dial the intervals over a long jam. Anyway… $10 for hours of engaging “experiment/play” is my jam. It’s all about digging into a search for something I can take pride in making happen. I’m sure this site is loaded with folks that approach app purchases with invention and experimentation as a just reward since we live with people that think “Frankly Scarlett, I don’t give a damn.” The benefit is avoiding hearing the polite “interesting” review for the hundredth time. That’s another reason most share their work here… you can get some encouragement to keep trying mixed with the “interesting” reviews.
