Trying to figure out a guitar effect - Sawed Off Shotgun by The Glorious Sons

What’s the effect going on in the silo right at the 2:00 mark? Sounds super scratchy, distorted, makes me think of Velcro. I’m almost sure there’s a fuzz pedal, but is there sone kind of clipping or bit crushing going on?

Not sure, but the Zvex Fuzz Factory pedal was the first fuzz pedal that allowed dialling in the ‘dying battery’ velcro-ey, sputtery fuzz-sound tht evokes, as it had gate and bias controls

  • Maybe try Eventide Crushstation has some bit-crushed type distortion effects and its own gate

  • Think it’s often referred to as a “gated fuzz”, those velcro-y bits. CrushStation has a Sag knob that simulates what Tickle was describing as that dying battery sound, and you can mix that with gate knob to get kinda close. I’m not really a fan of the sounds that Crushstation puts out (and I can never seem to get rid of the dry signal even 100% wet) so I don’t use it much. Tbh I love that ripped fuzz sound too but have yet to find a good digital alternative to it. Think there’s just some analog magic that’s goin on in those lil fuzz boxes that’s just not translatable to digital… but I would LOVE to be proven wrong! Haha

  • There’s also a preset under the new Code Module in Drambo called Tube distortion that has a bias knob that can also get close

  • Has anyone tried the fuzz effects in Bias FX 2?

Good catch, playing with the bias and hyst parameters over the electric guitar instr preset gets into that territory, at least from the little I can discern over that full live mix in the video
Would be really interesting to hear someone who can actually play guitar using the effect (solo)

  • If someone posts the Drambo patch I’ll test it out.

This isn’t really quite the same, but I was testing out some chains with Bandit 2, Dynabunny, a ToneX Honeytone model, and a Dr. Bonkers IR.

Sorry in advance that it’s just noodling around 😁

Never used Bias Fx but remember using this app called Bias Pedal when I first got my iPad
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/bias-pedal/id1020011770
Remember you could like “open up” the pedals and change the bias, voltages, even battery types along with other cool mod stuff. But it crashed all the time so I deleted it. You might have better luck? May be worth a shot (I might try reinstalling as well)

Looks like the same dev. I have the bias amp and a few of the IAPs and like it, but it not being AUv3 means I don’t use it much. I’m not opposed to digging into it though

  • Here’s that drambo code module:

Gets kinda close I guess, also kinda sounds like farts haha. Digital fuzz is a tough one…

That’s pretty cool, and great playing, byw. I really needed to hear the fx on its own.
And thanks for bringing that great code preset to my attention. It’s at the end of the list and I only glanced over it. Has some great potential, I wonder if I can make it even better (most probably recurring to gemini or something as I’m no wizard)

It’s been a while since beepstreet released it (not sure if it’s still beta or not) and I’m surprised more community made stuff hasn’t popped up on patchstorage. Maybe people just don’t have an interest in dealing with writing code? I know I don’t haha. But yes much potential to be had there and I’m still looking forward to future creations.

Back to the guitar effect, perhaps Fuzz Droid could be of use? I installed and tried to test it but apparently I had already used the 14 day free trial that it offers 🤷🏻‍♂️

This NAM capture is sounding good. Not quite there, but we’re getting close.

Didn’t know pedal captures were on the table! Try this one, my goto for that Velcro fuzz sound (especially the last two captures)

  • Nice song/solo, haven’t heard of this band before. Doesn’t sound like a fuzz. I’d try a mid range boost overdrive with a tremolo effect with depth set high for that cut out sound - guitar digging in playing double bends (unison). There’s also a lot of delay and panning going on.

    Something like this.

Strandberg Classic -> Screamer (not a fan of tubescreamers, but it's probably one of these) -> MRH810 -> Nembrini Tremolo -> Delay3000 (ping-pong style) -> IRLoader -York Audio Marshall cab. (Everything is Nembrini, but I'm sure you can easily replace with other apps.)

  • Most obvious to me is the sputtery fuzz and seemingly random panning effect.

@pbelgium as the right idea. I don’t really hear fuzz.
