Tails + Silo vs. OtherDesertCities + rymdigare vs. Ascent + Descent

So I'm choosing between these three combos:

Tails + Silo
OtherDesertCities + rymdigare
Ascent + Descent

For reverbs, I currently have Audio Damage EOS2 and VirSyn AudioReverb, plus a bunch of freebies. Delays, I have: Klevgr Modley and Imaginando GRFX, plus a bunch of freebies. All excellent and get a lot of use.

I feel I'm a bit lacking in the delay department, though, and my reverbs are a bit on the vanilla side. Some freaky granular and shimmery goodness wouldn't go amiss, and I've narrowed my choices down to these three combos.

Anyone care to weigh in on which combo will give me the best bang for the buck, considering what I already have? Also, feel free to elaborate on the strengths and/or drawbacks of specific plugs, mix and match, or suggest alternative singles or combos.

Comments

  • I’m not a huge fan of shimmer peronally. For me, the standouts here are Silo, ODC, and Rymdigare. You could do a lot of cool stuff with those three. If only getting one, it would be hard to chose. Maybe Silo.

  • Silo & Rymdigare

  • Difficult to say which specific combo to be honest. Have to say, I agree with @Gavinski on the standouts.

If I were going for only one though, considering your comment and what you’ve already got, I’d go for ODC. If you feel you’re lacking in the delay department then ODC has really got you covered, it’s really comprehensive and full of possibilities with its multiple delay modes.

  • anything + rymdigare

As regards alternative combos, the two Fabfilter's Timeless 3 and R2 provide infinitely flexible possibilities. Watch a couple of the lengthy youtube videos on both.
+1 about silo, amazing granular, comprehensive options (much like the Fabfilter's then)

I’m with you on shimmer ; I think the one from Bleass is the only one I really use but even then not often cause the effect can be a bit “much”

Your UA deep dive video got me curious on Silo but then again Tails kind of too although you weren’t as high on it

  • Tails is good, but I don't use it much. My go-to reverbs are FAC Alteza and Cascade. I also like Rymdigare, which is also kind of a noise machine. I would recommend them in that order, especially because Alteza has a wonderful shimmer.

Silo is fantastic. It's very different from GRFX --- I'd describe it as grittier, more industrial, more experimental and raw, although it can sound pretty as well. It has a reverb built in which can be used by itself, and it's quite good. I would say you don't really need Silo and Tails together. Tails is better for more traditional reverb stuff, like putting it on vocals or guitar.

OtherDesertCities is literally a desert island delay. It's ridiculously good and everyone should have it. No brainer. It does so much.

Of your combos I'd pick ODC and Rymdigare, but my own suggestion would be ODC, Silo and FAC Alteza.

    +1 Rymdigare
It’s the first music app I ever bought and it sent me down this whole rabbit hole of an iOS music ecosystem ❤️. And it’s the only fx app that tells a quirky little story as you use it, so bonus points.
    And it sounds great.

  • +1 ODC +1 Rymdigare I don’t have Ascent. Descent although not costly at all is the weakest of Audio Damages otherwise amazing lineup. I’m going to pop an FAC Bandit 2 in here if you want some design. To sum it up though ODC & Rymdigare will never not be on my iPad.

  • I wish every post on this thread would say what kind of music they make :)

Curious especially about ambient dub techno applications of these fx.

  • @everyone: I appreciate all the comments and have taken them into consideration. I’m leaning toward ODC, Silo, and Rymdigare. Alas, I missed the ODC sale as I was hemming and hawing over the holidays lol.

I don’t make ambient dub techno exclusively, but I’ve dabbled from time to time. Of the plugs I own, Modley would be a great pick for delay with its many bundled fx and the ability to insert them pre, post, and in the loop section of the delay. For reverbs, EOS2 and AudioVerb will get the job done, but they might be a bit vanilla for a “main character” reverb.

ODC is useful for virtually everything. Dubstation 2 by the same dev is also a great delay for dubby stuff.

A really interesting and unusual delay I like is TTAP. You can get all kinds of squoshy sounds out of it.

    I always recommend Silo, it’s a weapon.

Other Desert Cities is the king for the dub-techno end of that spectrum. But it can quickly get out of control, so I would put a limiter on that if you play with some of the wilder presets. For the ambient end - Rymdigare covers a lot of ground. I love Silo, too, but don't have as much experience with it.

As for OP - I have combined Rymdigare and ODC on the same channel a few times, but I think only one or the other is needed tbh. It is a lot of sound to manage when combined. You would find yourself with many worlds to explore with just Other Desert Cities on it's own.

A while back I made a vid of some Silo presets — the input is the beat at the start, everything else is Silo. Its ability to transform sound in multiple dimensions is really unparalleled. Oh, and it also looks super cool :D

Wow. Some of that I could just listen to on its own. I have had Silo for years and haven't used it much. That's about to change.

Very cool! And agreed @gleandibson , this has spurred a revisit for me as well haha

Thanks for sharing that. Like the others - I think I'll have some fun and play with Silo a bit more.

Silo + Rymdigre is a nasty lil combo- you can get some insane sounds from them by themselves, but combined it kinda blends into this hellish / hellraiser style ambience which I adore.

I feel like ODC is a bit more musical- I dunno tho, it too can also get weird. It's certainly not my go to when trying to create other worldly scenes tho.

Thanks for the Silo Presets @timfromtheborder

What other presets are you sitting on?

Oh, wasn't it u that scored Phosphor 3 recently? Kinda want it.

I actually don’t make a lot of presets. Or at least I don’t save my presets, so they end up just living inside projects. I am slowly building up some GRFX ones though. Mostly depends on how interesting an app is, and having a random button also helps to get started.

I don’t have Phosphor 3 but I’ll probably cop it, given how much I use Continua and Quanta 2.

Check out the bundle- it'll probably be free for you.

Also, your burst fire preset is dope as hell on high hats!

I can buy Phosphor at 4.99, or complete the bundle for 13.99 😂 classic App Store shenanigans due to buying the others on discount.

  • Well, pickles!
