Apps to playing MIDI notes with sliders

I really love playing Instruments with sliders like Koala Samplers note repeat with velocity set to pitch or like the play surface of Korg Gadgets drum machines. Sadly both don't send midi out.
I thought I could use Loopy, but slider widgets can't send notes. Also tried MusiKranken but didn't get close.
Any apps I should look into? Preferably for iPhone.

  • Bram Bos Salome is great for this :)

  • What exactly, would you like the sliders to do? If you like Drambo, I could try to build something.

I'd like the sliders to send out midi notes of a chosen scale with different rhythmic patterns.

TC-Data might be of interest. It’s not sliders but a whole touchscreen controller. It’s highly configurable with modules for scales, arps and sequences. And you get MIDI LFOs and envelopes as well. Steep learning curve but lots of fun.

Shall the notes play at a steady rhythm, shall they play all the time, or just when you touch the slider, what change shall the position of the slider make (pitch?). Be a bit more precise and I try building something:)

Koalas note repeat has multiple sliders for different repetitions (4ths, 8ths, 16ths etc) while the slider values are mapped to pitch. You can also play polyphonically when using multiple sliders. The notes are only played when touching the sliders.

Haven't touched Drambo in a long time. Does it have ui elements that are usable as a playing surface?

The steep learning curve and the price tag make it rather unappealing. Any videos that give a good overview?

I can understand that. In terms of videos you will find a lot on YouTube. Another interesting app could be Gestrument Pro.

Yes, I think you can build cool playing surfaces in Drambo. For your plans, sliders don’t work, because they don’t send gate out, when touched, the xy-pad does however. I built a little something, that does, what you described:

    Here’s the midirack-preset:

Sounds like a chain of XY pads would work. It detects touches and the two directions could be mapped to pitch, transposition, repeat speed, rhythm density etc., whatever you have in mind.
Then, sliders for anything that doesn't need to send touches (although slider movements could trigger something too).

By the way, there is a "Punch-In FX" module that lets you map different audio effects to each MIDI note, this may come in handy when you want even more...

So it's more a question of how you'd like it to work.

hey, koala does send midi out!

go to samples/more/ and drag midi out to a pad.

hey, and when you hit edit with the midi enabled pad selected, you get a midi monitor and out select! :)

Koala does send midi out from the note repeat if you put the MIDI-OUT (IAP) rather than a sample on the pad you want to use.

  • cool patch! @tyslothrop1
shame we cannot slide between the xy pads.
would it be possible to do it all with just 1 xy?:)

    Thanks.

Well, I could put the 4 rates into the 4 "columns" of one xy-pad, or even simpler just modulate the rate via the x-axis. But then the polyphony would get lost. Would be cool, if one xy-pad could register more than one touch.

  • This is a cool way to use Koala - Had never thought to do this. I guess note repeat doesn't work super well with synths, though? Doesn't seem to allow sustained notes. I guess I would think that it would retrigger the note in a loop if I held it down.

I see what you mean. The notes are short, like drum triggers. That is too bad. A note length parameter, or at least legato mode would be nice. There are scripts that you can pass the midi through to provide that, but that's a bit of a hassle.

  • Has anyone used ThumbJam or Beatsurfing? I feel like I’ve seen them have similar functionality.

  • Can someone screenshot the Koala MIDI out setup?

  • Not exactly what OP is looking for . I am using an xy pad to control rate and pitch but a fader could have been used just for rate

Access the MIDI Out component from the samples browser > More > MIDI Out. If you don't see it then you don't have the IAP yet.
