Do you still use AudioShare? Why or why not?

Recording in AUM always dumps your files into AudioShare, which I’ve found to be an extra step in bringing files into other apps. I’d honestly rather have a dedicated folder in iCloud for exports than save to AudioShare, have to go in the app to select my files, and export to an iCloud directory.

  • I still use it occasionally, although begrudgingly.

I don’t record in AUM often, and it’s mostly because of the walled off ecosystem with AudioShare.

  • Use it all the time for recording in AUM and for trimming files and making exact loops of files created in other apps that don't output perfect loops. Also handy for normalizing and converting formats. The walled ecosystem is no issue because AudioShare is accessible in the Files app and you can also export files in the app to anywhere you want quickly and easily. It's as convenient as using any other app.

  • Do you not have audioshare in the files sidebar? If not you can add it...

Exactly this. Essential if you use AUM. And I use the WiFi Drive to transfer stuff to and from my pc

  • Still use it.
Korg Gadget has ‘Export to AudioShare’ as an option.
So it’s got all my Gadget audio exports.
At the moment, I prefer it over Files because it’s easy and quick to audition various snippets. I also trim and normalize with it.

  • I don’t even understand this 🤔
I use AUM all the time, never used AudioShare, just Save to Files from the AUM recordings, job done 👍

  • I use AudioShare mostly for dumping unmastered projects from Gadget into there. I can also export from Cubasis into AudioShare. I also record from AUM into AudioShare. It steamlines things for me personally, but YMMV.

  • I use it to store samples and for basic editing. AUM is my key app, and they work nicely together. Plus some older apps that aren’t Files aware work well with it. That said, Samplr is the only one I can think of and I’ve not used it in a while.

  • I’ve used Audioshare since it came out. I don’t like saying this, but the app hasn’t kept up. It still works, but there’s a lot of room for improvement (which means, for me, a lot of incentive to purchase a new version).

  • I use AudioShare all the time for trimming and normalising audio tracks and then send them to Cubasis 3, if I didn’t use AudiiShare and performed the said tasks in Cubasis instead, the audio file would automatically double in size.

    Yes.

It was one of the original audio/midi file management systems, and been using ever since.
It shows up in the files app
Stores audio, midi, txt, and all kinds of file types
    Plays Audio & midi files
    Organizes audio, midi, txt, files
    Unzips files
Easy to share files, easy to rename, sort, search, etc… other basic file mgmt tools
    View waveform
Basic audio file editing & adjustments, fade in, fade out, normalizing, convert, trim files
Easy to make files into loops by setting bpm, and trim files by beats.
    Folders & file management
    Works well with AUM

  • Had it forever. Part of the furniture. Still comfy.

Better reply than anything I had. 😂 That just about covers it. Cheers, mate.

  • I use AudioShare regularly. It was really useful in a recent project of sampling the app Syntronik. The app was way unstable (AUv3 or MIDI) so I sampled all the sounds I found interesting and deleted that 4 GB app. I’ve also sampled a good number of hardware synths before selling them, and used AudioShare for all of it.

NS2 has as a native AudioShare import method. That’s handy! AudioShare works really well for me. I don’t want unnecessary subscriptions like iCloud, and the Files app isn’t in NS2 natively for importing files. From where I sit, iCloud, Dropbox or Files app would be more irritating to my workflow.

How would this work? AUM records to Audioshare. That's what the Recordings folder in the AUM sidebar points to. You can save from there, but that's where they go to begin with.

  • Isn’t Audioshare an app @garden ?
If so I don’t have it.
My understanding was that AUM just had an area internally that held recordings.
To get them out into the IOS file system you just long press one and Save to Files.

Hm. Well, you're right of course. Audioshare's an app.
But this is direct from AUM's "help" popup:

"The recordings are written directly into the file space of AudioShare, the audio file manager for iOS. You can use AudioShare to manage the recordings further, for example sharing them, doing some basic editing, normalizing and converting."

But there's this support thread in Discord, asking to break out of Audioshare sandboxing: https://discord.com/channels/933032247366418503/1465330154837639288

But then, there's this from the developer, in the same Discord:

"AudioShare is not needed, it just makes it easier to manage the recordings."
and: "In AUM, just long-press a recording and you can share/send it the usual ways (save to iCloud drive, AirDrop, etc..)"

So now I'm really confused. Does AUM automatically use Audioshare if it's installed, but somewhere else if not?

So now I'm really confused. Does AUM automatically use Audioshare if it's installed, but somewhere else if not?

The way I understand it: AUM saves audio recordings within itself; you cannot access them through the Files folder system. Audioshare was created to access those internal files. But like @GeoTony said you can also save any audio recording to the ios Files system by long pressing and “Save to Files” while in AUM. That’s been my workaround as well, never owned Audioshare.

Ooooh... I think I get. AUM has its own sandbox, which like a lot apps is not Files accessible. Audioshare exposes that sandbox. Without Audioshare, your only access to the sandbox is in the Recordings folder of AUM, from which you can "share" to the Files system.

  • Can we have a setup, with or without audioshare, where all aum sessions, recordings etc are stored in icloud, and are accessible to the aum file player?

  • I have a folder on iCloud called AUM Backup. In AUM I go to Files, long press on Sessions, get the option to save to Files, tap that and I’m in Files, choose AUM Backup and I’m done. A lot of what you need is already there. To backup and store files to iCloud, I believe, would require a re-write of AUM. in the meantime, the above process is quite sufficient. Sometimes something will no longer be installed on my iPad (an effect for instance) and AUM will tell me what it is. 😎✌🏼

BTW you can do the same with the AUM Recordings folder. You than then go to the AUM Recordings folder you’ve saved to iCloud, Quick Look to preview and then from Quick Look send them wherever you want by pressing the up arrow in the upper right corner. People hate on previewing files in the Files app but I find it much more convenient than using 3rd party apps. All you need is right there. 😎✌🏼

  • Wow this has been a very insightful thread. I hadn’t considered how good it is at loops and file size efficiency. That’s awesome that it handles MIDI and other file types - I didnt know it did more than audio. I usually use Koala to trim, normalize, etc. but it would be a lot easier to do inside Audioshare I imagine.

Is there a way to default to previewing in files? It always opens some other app by default.

  • @FizzyLizzy27 to preview a file in Files just select a file with a long-press and choose Quick Look. If you want to use that file, use the up arrow in the upper right to send it to the app you want to use it in. If you want to use it in AUM you have to send the file to AudioShare and then long-press to get the menu to open in AUM. Otherwise you can send from Quick Look directly to most apps. I use AEMS for instance and it makes a new audio track with the file on it. If the file is in a folder of files you can stay right in Quick Look and swipe the screen left or right to preview the other files in the folder. So if you chose the first file in the folder, you just swipe left and you can preview each file in the folder until a swipe no longer works meaning you have reached the last file in the folder. You can then swipe to the right if you want to go back to the beginning. Once your done with that folder you just x out and find another file or folder to look at using the same process of long-press, choose Quick Look and review your files. I have to go catch my breath. Hope this helps. The more you familiarize yourself with Files, the more you will realize how powerful it is. 😎✌🏼

  • As a major AUM user I’ve had it forever - feels like part of the furniture. Easy to organise files, nice waveform view with a few decent editing options - works for me.

  • I use it for recording ideas mainly. Easy access if I want a recording somewhere else. I have tried to find quicker solutions but I keep going back it it. 3 taps to record. Easy trimming and file organisation. Still good for me.

  • I seem to remember asking the dev about potential updates and he was interested but he must have become too busy to do anything about it. It’s still something I use all the time.
