Who Else is a Fan of BT's "This Binary Universe"?

I just caught wind of its (re)release to streaming. Thank f-cking goodness! I skimmed through just now (after almost a decade of not listening to it), and holy...shit! It's still one of the pinnacle albums of Ambient and Downtempo music.
I'm wondering what BT used for composing the music in the first place. I know he used prototypes of two of his plugins later released by Izotope (Stutter and Beat Breaker were the names?), used C-Sound, circuit-bent stuff, etc. He also used a 110-piece orchestra on three of the pieces.
What amazes me most is how long it took BT to compose the 7 pieces for the album. 2 years! 🤯 How does anyone have the patience to work on a project for such a long period of time? I usually churn out a single piece of music in a matter of hours (even if broken up over the course of a couple days), because my ADHD doesn't allow me the patience to let a piece marinate for more than a couple days. I want to "be done, move on".
All that to say - I'm a huge fan of this album. No matter what BT produced before or since this album, it's definitely his best work in my opinion. I think I still have the CD/DVD combo around here somewhere. (I hope I didn't sell it when I downsized and moved to this apartment. 🫣 )
I hope to making music that lush and gorgeous and on that level. Maybe not with the stutter edits and such, because that would take me too long to do "by hand". 😂 But the pieces are so well thought out. I'll be giving "This Binary Universe" a full listen tomorrow.

Fantastic groundbreaking album! I think I have a double disc edition somewhere, with a music CD and DVD with music videos for all the tracks. Ive searched for it in streaming platforms unsuccessfully over the years so if it’s coming available that’s excellent news.
So unlike anything he’s done (e.g. Trance) but as you say it has the beginnings of Stutter Edit and other techniques.
Oh, to clarify mate, the album was added to streaming services (by the looks of it) 1-2 years ago. I think I want to produce music like this! God bless Boards of Canada, and I will continue to listen to BoC, but I think it's time I ditch the tape wobbles. 😂
Dang how did I miss that? It’s probably 2/3 years since I looked for it and there it is on Spotify, added Dec 2024. Yippee!! 🙌
BT fanboy here 🔥
BT is big on using Kyma too
Is that the music controller app on iPad?
Edit - Also, BT uses UA Tails and AudioThing Wires on desktop. We got both available on iOS! ❤️
I've always wished I could afford Kyma. Alas...
I just Googled Kyma (I should've done that sooner, but my last post was during the middle of the night when I had a small bout of insomnia, lol), and yeah. Would be cool to afford Kyma. At least there's a controller for it...

...but not sure how useful this would be without the entire system.
Skimmed through "This Binary Universe" last night, but now I'm listening now to "This Binary Universe" front to back and absorping everything. This album, my goodness! It's blowing my mind even moreso than the last time I listened a few years ago.
Yeah, it looks intense, I still haven’t created my own stuff in Drambo yet 🙈
Drambo would be a good environment for creating this sort of music, but alas. Working within Drambo is easier for others, but an arduous task for me to wrap my head around. 🫣
Me too 😂
The extent of my sound design prowess usually involves adding movement to sounds but BT always inspires me with his mad scientist mixed with classical training background. He’s always at the forefront of technology, designing stuff that manipulates sound in new ways.
Is there a plugin you wish was real?
@jwmmakerofmusic I'm sure you’ve picked up on this new release already but just in case 😀 Sounds like This Binary Universe 2 …
Holy shit! I'll be checking that one out once home. Was probably under a rock lately. Cheers mate! Thank you.
And just discovered there’s a second version … Night Mode.
Excellent! I'm currently at a Brit Floyd concert. It's still intermission. 😎
Hint as to how f--king awesome that concert was!
Now that I'm home, I'mma pop an edible and vibe to these new works by BT.
@jwmmakerofmusic
2 years for a 7-track album is completely normal. This is the problem — it's easy to make a track in a few days or even a week, but this inevitably leads to the track missing that last 20% of perfection, the details. Most of the time I also don't have the patience for that, but the few tracks in my life where I really spent weeks or even a few months fine-tuning them are the best pieces I've ever made in my life.
So I'm always fighting with myself to not prematurely call a track "finished," but to reiterate on it and try to do that last 20% of work, which takes the most time but has the most profound impact.
This is really good insight and advice. ☺️ I must admit to something - most of my pieces take at most a few hours to complete. I like to work quick and fast. Not just due to a lack of patience (AuDHD in my case lol), but also wanting to leave behind a big body of work before my time is up.
No, I'm not dying or anything. 😆 I just mean 30 years down the line, I want to have a lot of music I can look back on and be proud of.
(Shit, I think the high is kicking in. 😆 Suddenly I'm a "philosopher".)
But anyways, do you have any advice for me as to how to slow down and be more patient with the process, mate?
My method is easy .. if I think my track is done and doesn't need any more tweaks I just put it into playist with some other tracks of people which are for me best musicians of all times.
In that moment I instantly realize that my track is COMPLETE shit and i need to work a LOT more on it

Lol! Using tracks as reference.
Good idea to be honest.
Seriously, very eye opening. Highly suggesting !
Will do then. ☺️ Thanks for the suggestion.
