Charging + audio/midi data
I'm rather confused about this (a murky topic). From what i've managed to gather, there needs to be some Apple sanctioned way to implement charging behavior while simultaneously providing data for audio/midi.
I presently own a few devices that can do this: Focusrite dock, iK multimedia 30pin midi adapter, and Griffin Studioconnect. What is even more puzzling is the new version of iK's midi adapter doesn't have the charge port.
Sooner or later i'm going to get to the bottom of this (most likely later )

The griffin studio connect was my choice and it is very good at what it does and not a bad price either.
In case you missed it there is a thread about the subject of simultaneous charging with usb camera adapters: http://forum.audiob.us/discussion/6262/send-a-message-to-apple/p1
Would be great if you signed the petition too! And another device that can charge the iOS device while doing audio is Apogee One. Unfortunately that's only if you use their lightning cable. So you can't have any other usb controllers connected with it unless you connect it all to a powered hub that plugs into the USB camera adaptor which of course means no charging.

Thanks for the link.
I did own the Apogee One briefly. A bit expensive for me though.
Apparently, Apple has made changes with third party Lightning developers, but what this means for this I haven't a clue.

Yes this is the one I use mostly. It's cheap, does the job, and is flexible.
BTW, I got one for $40 US (can't beat that! ...or actually I think these could be had for $30 at one point)
I'm not a 'huge' fan of the Griffin stuff recently (not sure what they are about now). That HD version of Studioconnect is so vapor, when companies do this they get on my naughty list pretty quick.
So smoke?
Get hip with the lingo daddy-o!
All smoke and no fire

Sorry, meant to say vapor (sort of)
'So smoke' does sound hip thought doesn't it
Hoping the iConnectivity Audio interface comes out soon and helps this situation along for some. It will at least allow the use of a powered midi hub, can accept standard class compliant midi devices, and can share audio between 2 iOS devices. Looks like it will be able to charge a tablet and a phone/iPod touch at the same time (though would accept 2 tablets with only one charging). Question marks are when it will be available (they're hinting soon), and how the converters stack up against the likes of Apogee.
Then again, why can't someone simply make a USB Hub device for the iPad that accepts class compliant Audio interfaces and class compliant Midi - that also charges an iPad - so we're not stuck trying to find an all in one unit?
Anybody know how battery life compares on the new wafer-thin models, to previous ones.
Battery life on an Air 2 is worse than Air 1, but better/equivalent to previous generations.

Can anyone comment on the audio quality of the 30 pin Studio Connect? My current iOS setup (audio/midi via a Novation X-Station) is nearly ideal, but as the battery life on my iPad 4 is getting worse it means that I often cannot reliably use my iPad for longer studio sessions. I've got an Apple 30 pin to Lightning adaptor, and for as cheap as the older Studio Connect is I'm thinking about getting one to at least swap back and forth with the X-Station so I can keep a charge and keep working if my battery gets low. I'm not thrilled about the inputs but could make due, but the RCA outputs put me off.
RCA or not my lightning version sounds great , I can not imagine the pins making a huge difference.
