Juggling free icloud tier of 5Gb since forever, but I need to clean up some stuff apparently

...cause it stopped working "storage full" and I use it all the time to transfer stuff in between devices (including windows PC using the browser idrive)

So I don't want to pay for extra cloud storage. The 5Gb "free" is still my plan, although I think it would be only fair that since I purchased so many more devices since that, apple wouldn't offer like 5Gb per device (yeah right), IMHO that seems greedy, but let's not go into that.

What I need to know, is how to find really big files like videos or whatever I saved to icloud over the years but I don't really care about. Don't want to spend hours going through that. Apple seems to conveniently hide folder space, is there a way to identify big files in the freaking maze of folders I made well over the past decade? There's a huge video there somewhere that would free me space for like 6 months. Sadly it's not porn, but you get the picture. Probably screen recordings. But how do I find them?

guess this is kind of a rant and also probably user ignorance, but any advice welcomed...

  • Moved out of the 'Other' category which doesn't show up in the general feed. Hopefully now your question will get some attention

    • Go to device settings > General > Storage. Wait for the list to populate. There's a "Review Large Attachments" item. Follow that and you'll see large attachments to text messages.
    • Here you can also see your apps with their storage size. You can sort by size. You can drill into the details to see how much space is in user files vs. the app. Those that have large app sizes you can offload if you don't use the app. The data will stay though. (Whatever you do, don't turn on "Offload Unused Apps". You don't want Apple making those decisions. 😬)
    • In the files app, search for files with the video's extension, or part of the name, if you know it. You can easily look up likely candidates for file extensions if you don't know what type the video was. You can sort the search results by size.
    • Keep in mind that the iOS/iPadOS file system handles duplicates of files specially. They normally do not take any more space no matter how many copies there are. Even if they were modified, the only added space are the changes.
      • This is important because, if you find duplicates, there's no point in removing the duplicates as the space won't be actually freed until the very last copy is gone.
      • Drambo's webDAV transfer is an exception to this. If you used that to move files in, then those are separate, unique copies, not Apple File System "clones".
  • Are you using iCloud backups? If so, I noticed that, since iPadOS 26.2.1 each backup expands (by 260 MB in my case), instead of remaining about the same size. The fix is to delete/cancel backups (in iCloud backup settings), enable backup, and back up manually.

As for iCloud storage, remember that there are two ways files can be stored to iCloud. First there's iCloud Drive, which can be managed through the Files app. The second is files "Saved to iCloud" by apps. You can enable different apps in iCloud settings, but you cannot manage the files. This is private data managed by the apps, just like their private data on your device. You can only manage it through the apps.
