When working in DAWs, do you work from the same project or new ones per track?

I’m trying to get more done in DAWs vs AUM. Usually in AUM I pretty much patch things together every time I open a session. It would be more efficient I’m sure to work off defaults, but it’s so easy to get things flowing there that I work off presets and bring in what I need every time. However, routing usually isn’t as visual or easy in DAWs as in AUM, and it feels like a template is necessary if I ever want to finish recording a track in something like Logic Pro or AEMS. So I’m curious how others set up their DAWs - what’s your setup and work flow?

I think only having the ability to open one plugin at a time combined with having the mixer and plugins separate makes it feel like I can’t focus on a plugin chain and have to think in terms of one plugin at a time. Working with sends seems more important than in AUM, and it can feel a bit convoluted to record MIDI instruments with needing to set up audio tracks. Stacks and templates feel like good tools to leverage.

  • Usually I just start a new project from scratch. I don't normally use anything for creating music outside of FLSM, Gadget, and Auxy Studio. Easiest ways to create music. I usually use Cubasis 3 for mastering the track(s).

  • It depends. I have templates in Cubasis 3 and Loopy Pro. But not for AUM or EG Nodes.

  • i always start from my template projects, it's a huge time saver.

  • I use Korg Gadget and Groove Rider 2 and usually start with a blank project. This is my hobby and i enjoy every aspect of it. :)

I usually start with a blank project, but it would be great to finally make a few decent templates to prevent me having to set things up every time.

I usually start out with an empty project in Zenbeats, then quickly put some idea stuff down on different tracks, to see how the play together and work from there. I have a template, aka some plugins I always use on the master, but apart from that I never bother with plugins on individual tracks at early stages. Sounds and levels are way more important to me and I want to keep the mix as clean as possible, until a plugin is needed to create a specific sound or effect. On the other hand, I am mostly a tweaked preset user, and I usually leave any effects on in a preset unless it screws the mix up in any way due to frequencies and such.

Plugins in general show up in my mix first when mixing and/or mastering.

  • Every time a new synth app comes out I usually spend a lot of time exploring it inside Cubasis 3, if I happen to find a good sound or Sequence, I always record what’s in my mind at that moment and name it eg..April Project 1, I then start a new project and carry on exploring the new app, this usually happens 1/2 dozen times naming them all in order - April Project 2 etc, when I go back to these projects at a later date I can hear new ideas and I add them to my original recording until it builds up. if I want to make major changes I usually duplicate and work on the duplicated project just in case I mess things up. If I just sit at one project until it is finished, it would take forever, skipping back and forth to “projects in progress” helps create new ideas and this method has work for me for the past 36 years.

  • Every project is different, so in my case I can't see how a template would help. YMMV of course.

I'm the same way. I like to start with a "blank canvas". I try to avoid any apps which pose an uphill battle for me when it comes to creating music instantly. That way, I don't have to rely on any templates. For me personally , apps like Cubasis are superior for recording and processing vocals, mastering tracks/EPs/albums, etc. :) Just a little clunky for marking down any reasonable music ideas.

Strangely enough, I tend to gravitate towards "walled garden" apps like FL Studio Mobile, Gadget, and Auxy Studio for getting my ideas down efficiently and fleshing them out. Each of these apps has plenty of effects for me personally to achieve decent mixdowns with as well.

I’ve noticed you tend towards self contained hosts. I’m sure it’s constraints breeding creativity, and that sounds like a good workflow to go from those closed environments to a DAW like Cubasis where you can bring in any plugins you need.

I’m curious, do you play any instruments or mostly work digitally? I think of my aversion to something like Gadget or grooveboxes is lack of bringing my guitar playing into the fold.

I should dive more into instruments in the DAWs I use like Logic and Cubasis vs bringing in plugins to start every time. Even if not templates that at least eliminates a bit of choice paralysis.

Constraints do breed the creativity. :) I will say, while I've spent a lot of time with Gadget the past 2-3 weeks, FL Studio Mobile is still my favorite of the three closed environments despite Auxy Studio being the quickest to get down ideas with. 😅

I do play the piano professionally in public. In fact, I have a gig this evening coming up I leave for in about an hour. I get what you mean about wanting to bring your instrument(s) of choice into the fold, but I don't normally play in my notes with a keyboard controller and just program them instead.

    It truly does, mate.
