It's year-end 2014 - Your best app recommendation
I enjoy the changing iOS app landscape, and constant flow of cool new apps we can check out without spending scores of dollars (like I did with guitar pedals.)
But.... I'd really like some clear statements about the few apps you most recommend now. A nice, short list. And maybe we can dig this thread up in December 2020 and see how far we've come.
My most highly recommended apps as of December 2014

Crap, I didn't even realize Gadget was out in 2014 (I got it more recently). That's easily the best iOS music app of the year, then.
For guitar-specific apps, ToneStack is probably the lead contender because of how much it offered (and the all-in-one IAP bundle that forced two primary competitors to follow suit). But, honestly, Flying Haggis came out 3/3/14, and I probably use it more!
Fiddlewax Pro for me. Just because it was really a new approach that got my creative juices flowing. And, last but not least, the most responsive dev with great support.
From Korg I was hoping for the MonoPoly, a new iElectribe, but year was so young and we got a bolt from the blue, Gadget, so yes I'd go with that. But for sheer, simple, beauty, Crystalline, I'd use this on everything, if I could.

Since some people are listing their all-time favorites, and others are listing their favorites released this year, I'm doing both. I limited myself to five for each category, listed in no particular order. These are based on my personal usage, not necessarily what I consider the most creative, professional-sounding, or universally appealing.
Of course, highest honors go to Audiobus for bringing it all together.

Also, I just got Flying Haggis and Amp ONE, so I haven't had much time to play around with those. However, in the short time I've had them, I'm already highly impressed.
App: Old fashioned English tie (that American kissing your sister thing) between Best All Round Addition: Gadget and Best Got Me Flying and Keeps me High: Egoist.
Unasked for extra award: Best Developer (Enthusiastic Responsiveness Dept.) The Fiddlewax Fella. This last one contested strongly with two or three others who were unlucky to miss out and can still be proud of their efforts etc.

I started discovering Audiobus and getting into iPad music this year, so I'd say Audiobus and Cubasis are important for me. I've made some fun things just using the internal instruments in Cubasis. ThumbJam has been used a lot too, mainly exploring all the fine instruments in it. Looking forward to see what's coming out for us in 2015! I hope my iPad 2 will survive another year, with all these demanding and large apps...
BIAS AMP Designer hands down for me for 2014. ToneStack needs at least an honorable mention simply for the price/value it gives and I love some of the distorted sounds I can get from it.
I'd be lying if I didn't say I've played Gadget more than BIAS since I got Gadget/Module during the sale.
BIAS for me as well. It made me drop my Line 6 stuff in favor of it for live use.
2014: Gadget, Tonestack, DrumPerfect, Crystalline, Altispace, Final Touch, maybe Module too. It was a good year for apps, bad year for upgraded Operating Systems!
For 2014: Sector and Egoist and I predict Sparkle will make my list if that makes it to us before year end
Mitosynth is my #1.
One thing that really 'struck home' this year seemed to be how serious, some of the big names are really getting into iOS, Korg, Cakewalk etc... But some wonderful innovations from smaller, hard working, developers. 2015 looking good, but as @NoiseHorse said bad year for iOS updates. I just hope that it will not become an annual 'ritual of pain', as much for developers, as users.

Another app is Auria. So simple to click record and get your stuff going.
Third is Z3TA. This amazing synth has so many awesome presets, bread and butter sounds, I use this one live at church.

The most useful apps I have are midi controller apps:
I recently rediscovered Looptical. I consider the lack of a traditional linear sequencer a blessing! Composing only with your ears and without distracting visual feedback works wonders for me, looptical keeps me in right brain (intuitive, creative) mode more than other apps. I'm really hoping for new features next year!
The programs at the bottom..
the impc pro without a doubt, for changing the drumsampler beatmachine game entirely and raising the bar to another level, forcing others out of the immediate game (beathawk) and making others re-imagine their future (bm3).
My favourite new apps this year were:
Egoist, SeekBeats, Gadget, Triqtraq, iVCS3 and Oscilab. I only really got back into the iPad this year after discovering Audiobus though, so I can also add older apps such as Samplr, Thor, Thumbjam, Turnado, Addictive Synth and Nave.
Biggest disappointments: iMPC Pro, iMini and TC-11.
Best two apps on my iPad: Audiobus and Audioshare, without which most of the above wouldn't be half as much fun to use.
Bias, Auria and DrumJam.
