Keyboard/Midi Controller Question

edited December 2014 in General App Discussion

Hi there, everyone,

My Alesis Micron just crapped out, and so I've decided to buy and iPad and a midi controller/synth to replace it and try some of the cool stuff you guys have been doing with the iPad.

I'm looking for a controller/synth with 37 or 49 keys (preferably 37), with full size, great feeling keys, and although I have a decent amount of leeway in budget, I don't want to overspend. Also, I prefer more compact units (units without a lot of sliders and knobs) at this point, but it's not a deal breaker.

So far, from demo'ing models at Guitar Center. I've gotten the following impressions:

  • The only new (2010) 37 key model I've seen is the Novation Ultranova. $400
  • Novations in general (except the launchkey series) have excellent feeling keyboards.
  • Certain M-Audio keyboards feel decent (Axiom and the 61 keystation, but not the 49 -- I'm guessing it's the semi weighted aspect of the 61)
  • Akai MPK249 is also decent $400
  • Korg Taktile is ok; a bit better than the M-Audio but not as good as the Akai. $250
  • Novation Impulse 49, feels good $300
  • Older, used Novation REMOTE37 SL $100-200 on ebay.
  • Novation SL mkii 49, this is the flagship model, $300 refurbished, $450 new
  • Alesis V49 was interesting in that the keys were too stiff and bounced back super fast, as opposed to being too mushy

Looking for input for great feel and compact being the most important criteria. Thanks.
