The "Desert Island Synth" Challenge, May 2026

What is that one special synth you simply cannot live without? The one if, say, you were to wash ashore on a desert island, you'd use exclusively to create music with? That is the basis of this challenge - pick one synth and use as many instances of it as you wish for creating music. You can choose something as simple as Monolit, or something as complex as Synthmaster or Twin 3. Here are the rules...

  1. You're restricted to using only one synth as a sound source.

  2. No samplers, romplers, modular environments (i.e. no miRack), or wavetable synths allowed. Subtractive, additive, FM and other synthesis is allowed.

  3. The synth can be either an internal synth (such as Obsidian in NS2, GM Synth in FL Studio Mobile, Wolfsburg in Gadget, etc) or an AUv3 synth.

  4. Bouncing/Freezing a track to audio to free up the processor is allowed.

  5. You can use any effects plugins (internal and AUv3) as you wish to help you shape the sound.

  6. Your finished piece can be mastered either in the project itself or bounced to another app for mastering.

  7. Any creative environment will do, whether a DAW like Logic or Cubasis or FL Studio Mobile, or a groovebox like GR-II, Bam, Nodes, or even apps like Apematrix or AUM.

  8. You can produce in any genre you wish.

Once finished, be sure to upload to Soundcloud, or Youtube, or Dropbox, or HearThis, or wherever you're most comfortable uploading to. ❤️

As far as I go, I'll be choosing the humble 3xOSC in FL Studio Mobile. 😅 I can't wait to hear your creations. No hard deadlines, but I'll set a soft deadline of May 31st. Good luck!

  • Jim,

So “no modular environments”, which eliminates Drambo,

But “any creative environment will do” such as any groovebox (except for Drambo?)

you can probably guess what my desert island choice is btw 🙂

I didn't quite think of Drambo as a modular environment. 😅 Lol. You'd still only be able to use one synth of choice though mate.

Cool, an Island challenge? I’ve got to join in the fun. My first thought is to use sunrizer with spidericemidas island presets. :) Would korg iM1 be considered a synth? Or iWAVESTATION?

  • HILDA. No wait, Dagger! Jeez this is tough…

I'd consider iM1 and iWAVESTATION as romplers. Just very advanced romplers. Sunrizer is a synth. :)

Right? So many top choices to choose from in the Appstore. ❤️

  • Where does Pianoteq/GeoShred land?

  • Sequencers are OK, yes?.

  • can we multi track? Or just one track? Is Ivcs3 considered modular?

I'd say those are more "romplers", even if physical modelling. :)

Definitely. You can use an arp, or a stoachastic sequencer to drive the synth(s).

Multi track, but all synths must be the same synth. :) iVCS3 is a modular synth, but not a "modular environment". Just no Eurorack stuff where you can use many different oscillator modules from various places. 😅

Mine is complete. All 3xOSC, including the drums.

  • I was going to say what if my desert island didn’t have a drum synth….here’s looking at you @AnalogMatthew Retro Keys

  • And hole up a sec I’m still working on the gadget one! Sheesh

  • Here’s mine, 100% NERD Synth.

    And lots of fx.🙂

Hahaha! 😂 Take your time mate. No hard deadlines here.

    That was absolutely marvelous!

  • Thanks @jwmmakerofmusic!🙂

Here’s another, made in the (I suspect) largely-forgotten shapesynth. It’s been around since forever but it’s never fallen from my good graces.

  • A little bit late to the party here. This track is made entirely using Arturia's CZ V. This sort of closes a 40-year loop for me, as the Casio CZ 1000 was my first ever synth (it was all I could afford then). I loved that synth for years, but eventually sold it, calling it the "Cheesy 1000" at the time.

Fast forward to last month, when I got a deep discount on the Arturia V Collection Pro, which included the CZ V. 40 years and the ability to add amazing effects does wonders for the sound design capabilities for the basic CZ sound architecture. I was amazed at what a lot of the new presets could offer, and this desert island synth challenge provided a great opportunity to see what I could put together with the virtual synth. I think the CZ V is one of my favorites now in the V Collection.

  • Ok so this was a right pain in the proverbial. I started on gadget on my phone at work. Got annoyed, moved to iPad, got more annoyed, moved audio to logic, got even more annoyed.

    Everything in it is Wolfsburg.

The biggest challenge was the drums. Easy enough to get hats, there’s a bit of work to get a Clap2/snare. Fx easy enough. But it’s a right boot in the hawmaws to get a decent kick. So much rumbling and fumbling and it returns out the gadget ringmod is the only thing I could remotely work with to get to be anything kick like…but it’s not useable in logic.

So it’s a little uplifting trance thing.

  • I assume the synth didn’t get waterlogged when washed ashore and that nearby palm trees have power outlets? 😁

If that’s the case I’ll see what I can come up with - been playing with the new version of U-he Zebra, and it’s fantastic.
