What is that Sound?

*** Spoiler Alert ***
Below I discuss plot details for the tv series, "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." If you have yet to watch the series, I discuss one episode in a general way, and this may or may not ruin it for you. Proceed at your own risk :)

I've started watching Joss Whedon's series, "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." In season one, the way each episode is constructed is to have the story arc complete, then attach a short, and often humorous, epilog on the end.

In the first season, at the end of the 3rd episode (The Asset), the epilog shows the spinning gravitonium, out of which a hand comes grasping for freedom, only to be sucked back into the mercury-like liquid. As this section fades in from black, there is one of my favorite percussion sounds.

This sound is sort of like an electric kick, but it is definitely more fluid. It has a sharp attack, but not piercing. The balance of this sound's elements is perfect, IMHO. Does anyone know how this sound is constructed?

I have a habit of emailing famous people with ridiculous questions, and before I try to email the composer, Bear McCreary, I thought I ask here first. (Other queries of famous people include the time I emailed Carl Palmer to ask what the time signature of Lucky Man was. I had gotten into a debate- I swear it's NOT 3/4)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Sorry, should've done this first... Just checked YouTube, can't find the music cue there. I watch the series on Netflix, so I guess I could record a snippet, but that would be both illegal and immoral.

I did find the composer's blog about that episode:
    http://www.bearmccreary.com/#blog/blog/agents-of-s-h-i-e-l-d-the-asset/

Mentions everything except anything about that cue. Argh. I realize this is a left field question, I know few of you are going to run out and watch 45 mins of TV to identify a single sound! But if anyone can...

I recall having a brief e-mail back & forth with Bear McCreary years ago when he was busy making MIDI files (his Boingo "Reptiles & Samurai" cover MIDI is pretty slick), mostly because I was busy making MIDI file covers then, too! He's having a good run with soundtracks for TV. I would think he'd be approachable.
