Never mind Tape 16 DAW, here’s Tape 04

With all the talk about the Tape 16 DAW taking over the world and how AUM can do everything it can and more. I was reminded of what I put together in AUM a couple of years back, I still use it everyday.

  • It's wild how many tape-based DAWs are being released this year. Tape 16, GCS Model 8, etc. 😂 These being released around the same time and season as "Inferno" by BoC. Coincidence?

That’s exciting! @""Jökulgil" , how essential is Gauss to this tape emulator? I don’t have it and, at first, I was considering using the emulation to record songs in the most traditional sense, not necessarily tape loops experiments (even though I’m really interested in learning how to do that). Are there any other apps that could do what it does in this setting?

Also, do you suggest any specific settings for any of the apps you use, like Chow Tape Model and k7d?

Thanks for sharing this with us!

  • Really cool template

BoC has a decent marketing budget.

  • I like the HPF Filter in Gauss. It really has a great tone to it. Still considering Other Desert Cities…I have so many delays, it’s difficult to find space for another one.
    Nice template.

True that, lol. And I do love me some BoC!

    Nice template.

Other Desert Cities is unique enough that some of its modes likely aren't covered by your other delays.
I'm not an app collector but when there's a new delay, I'll have a closer look 😄

I might just do that. Thanks.

Maybe. i’d personally wager coincidence. Tape aficionados have been around. I think it’s more to do with the timing of the release of agentic AI computing models we’ve seen this year. I’m not insinuating any of these devs are vibe coding, but perhaps using the other aspects of AI,, be it owners of vintage gear using it to train capture, or experienced software devs using AI as an automation tool, or both.

An interesting take indeed. Cheers mate. ☺️

I strongly recommend Gauss if you're interested in exploring this side. It has great character and value in the experimental realm.

It's not real tape, mind you. If you slow it down to almost stopped, the digital nature of what you're doing is totally apparent. That doesn't necessarily mean it sounds bad, but it's not analog tape. For that, you'll need expensive and annoying gear, and a ponytail.

  • For Loopy Pro users I have a 4-track tape style template that is pretty unique. Of course it has no tape effects, but lots of AUs can fill that space, my personal favourite is lo-fi-af.

Only think I listened to a main BOC album in 2005 era but this dude were part of the original BOC. Or the start of BOC but went their own way.

I've seriously considered Gauss before, probably will buy it someday, thank you! If I must control my finances and impulses even when it comes to a 50 bucks app (in my country's currency), let alone regarding gear that's not only waaaay more expensive, but also annoying. Also, the closest my hair could get to a ponytail is a mullet, and I wish to avoid them both. :D

Considering its function in this tape-like template, do you think Gauss adds any texture to the sound recorded in it even when it's not looping or is it used for looping purposes only? I'll start using this template to record more conventional songs, so if it's exclusively used for looping I'll postpone the purchase. Thanks!!!

  • Offhand I don't think Gauss acts the way you describe. Its tape effect only affects the sounds you record "to the tape." Other tape emulators act more like that. If I'm working with a loop and want to add a tape effect, I'll reach for ReelBus, Lo-fi-af, CHOW Tape, AudioThing Reels, etc. etc.

(Thinking through all the tape emulators I've bought makes me wonder if I have a problem.)

  • If you do, then you’re not alone, since I’ve bought all of these as well…🤣🤣🤣

But good to know about Gauss; guess I’m just going to wait a little longer before buying it and adapt the template to my fit my current needs!

Not essential, just useful. You could easily just record the output from the individual channels, or the master, and play those recordings back into the template by swapping out the Audio Source with AUM’s native File Player and play back those files. A bit like bouncing multiple tracks onto a single track.

  • 100% No AI and no vibe coding involved with the creation of this template. Even the picture of the TEAC/Tascam PortaStudio is real

Thank you so much for the explanation and, most of all, the template. Here’s hoping you, too, get to do many things you love with it.
