How to automatically start a video recording at a specific time ?

I’m trying to start a video recording (or audio) at a specific time, say 4:45 in the morning to record the dawn chorus and can’t be bothered getting out of bed.

So I’ve tried setting up a shortcut like this…

At 4:45 Run Immediatly
Take Video
Wait n seconds
Stop Recording

The problem here is that the Wait n seconds doesn’t do anything, it just keeps recording until I manually stop it.

I’ve also tried…

At 4:45 Run Immediately
Create Recording Fred
Wait n Seconds
Stop Recording

The problem here is that the Create Recording comes up with a prompt ‘Allow “Create Recording” to start an audio recording?’ Cancel or Allow, to which I have to manually click Allow which then starts the recording and does save a file called Fred after n seconds.

So my question is… is there a way of fully automating this ?
Thanks in advance !

Edit, probably should be in Other Music Content ? Could @wim or another moderator move it? Ta

For the audio record option, have you tried going to the info icon > Privacy in the shortcut editor, and turning on Allow Running When Locked and Allow this shortcut to access: Voice Memos?

That worked for me. I haven't tried video yet. Note however, that other Shortcuts I use seem to need the prompt answered at various times anyway. I think after reboots, or edits to the shortcut, or OS updates, or ... who knows. Shortcuts is a mess.

From what I can see there's no way to stop a video recording with the shortcuts app. I guess you could try letting it time out (10 minutes?) and then trim the video manually.

  • Many thanks @wim
My settings (as far as I can tell) are the same as yours but I still get the prompt.
Tried deleting / recreating/ switching off / on but still the same.
I thought that might be the answer for videos.
Overall I think I’ll just get off my bum and do it manually 😊
