Koala Default MIDI map behavior not working as expected

I’ve got Kola settings to “Use MIDI mappings” to Off, and the MIDI note offset to C1, but the pads are not responding sequentially to the MIDI notes. Note 12 does trigger pad 1, but Note 29 triggers pad 2. I have done some custom MIDI mapping before, with the setting being “on”, but removed all of the assignments. This is in AUM. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi. I've read that the Koala pad numbering varies somehow depending on their appearance, i.e. the rows and columns of the grid. Are they numbered from the lower left? And this affects the default MIDI mapping.

Edit: Here is the thread I remembered.

Yes, Koala's pads get jumbled between landscape and portrait modes. Very strange design choice, but it's been that way forever and isn't going to change at this point.

  • Thanks @uncledave. That clears things up.
