Just bought it and the intro offer was still valid for me too.
Still valid here too. Do I need this? No. Does it satiate my hunger for a tp-7 since it doesn’t play nice with iOS. Kinda
Does this have or will have some sort of midi sync so that I could set it to start recording when I press play on my sampler or drum machine ? It would also make syncing additional tracks recorded later easier too.
That’s what I’m wondering ? 🤔
I would love a tp-7, I think that it's really all about the physicality of that object. A touchscreen version wouldn't scratch that itch properly for me.
No it doesn’t have. Wich is a shame. The picture of it together with an Op1f kind of made me think it would for seamless integration. I guess for this kind of recording Loopy Po is still king. I am about to email the developer to suggest it though.
It has the simple functionality and clean gui wich also makes me want a tp-7. For memo, foliage and voice-snippet recording. But yeah: If tp-7 had iOS disk management I would definitely buy one… wich makes me kinda glad it doesn’t :P
Yeah, I would probably be tempted by this if there was an Android version (I'm not an iPhone user).
so is this auv3. can i place this in AUM and record infinity ?
It’s not AUv3. Apparently in the pipeline. Who knows, really
That would be awesome indeed. On android to but do plan to upgrade to iPhone in the near future. Bought this app because I hoped it had the functionality @CRAKROX was talking about for quick backing up of my Op1f to iPad.
In what situations are people using this? I don't know why, but I can't wrap my brain around when I would use this instead of AUM or Loopy Pro. Can someone help me?
/maybe I'm just too exhausted
I was playing to use it to make quick backups of my Op1f to later use in daws but the missing start stop functionality makes it hard to sync the recordings up in Logic Pro or Loopy Pro afterwards.
Today i experimented with using it as a quick multitracker for songwriting. It recognizes 4 stereo (or mono) channels so it would be good for simple songwriting. To bad that after recording it disarms all tracks except number 1 and you have to manually rearm them again after pressing stop every time, making it kind of a slog for recording sections in different takes. it seems to want to focus more on overdubbing a track after recording. I just emailed the developer to ask if he would consider changing these aspects but we will see. As is i think Loopy will be remain my tool for this, wich is a shame. The UI and limited feature set really has a place in not distracting me while thinking about lyrics and music instead of recording and routing.
That is helpful, thank you. It looks really sharp and I love the feel of grabbing that reel and scrubbing it back and forth. But, yeah, not sure it fills a need in my creative workflow.
Just bought a copy! Looks like the "Founder" offer is still going as of May 9, 2pm EST
Curious btw, can it record from airpods mic?
Actually, looking at the manual, it looks like that's not an option, it'll use the built in mic
@CRAKROX Just received word from the developer: this was his reply:
Stop / Start messaging - This is one of the first major features I will be working on for the next big update.
Midi stop start sync, Midi CC, tempo sync etc.. so do know this is coming to lock timing on the OP-1 Field recoding a lot easier and tighter.
@tubespace. He is considering adding multitrack dubbing in the future. Fingers crossed.
@Gavinski confirmed: it does not pick the mic of your EarPods or buds. It goes for the mic of your device.
So, can you set the different tracks to run at different speeds and pitches? Can you manually scrub one track while recording the result internally onto another track? Can you bounce tracks to free up the others? Can you have one track playing in loop mode while the others aren’t?
I suppose all of these depend on the central concept - is it literally supposed to be like four track magnetic tape (i.e. the tracks all exist on one piece of tape therefore changes to speed etc. will naturally affect all tracks) or does each track have its own individual ‘piece of magnetic tape’ to allow more freedom?
I’ve skimmed through the manual but didn’t see answers to these questions.
Nice one ! Thanks for the heads up ! 😀
Nope, nope, nope, nope. It is literally a 4 track in that aspect. It is not in the manual because it is not in the app I guess. The manual is very well written.
Was using the app yesterday along with DJ Pro app on my iPad and the new Teenage Engineering Sidekick mixer to do a DJ set. Not sure but reels provides an open mic on the iPhone when plugged in which was kids cool for providing running commentary when DJing using the Sidekick effects!
I couldn't personally see myself wanting to do music production in this, in the way I use something like AUM. I just feel the reel manipulation would be a fun gimmick for manipulating sound, or it might be nice for doing field recordings or voice memos, and moreso on a phone than on an iPad.
Cool, thanks for clarifying - yes, that would explain why its not covered in the manual!
Yeah music production with how it is (now) seems like a big hassle. It is great for song sketching: laying down a part song when the lyrics and chords are done before moving on to the next section. I understand the design philosophy but it quickly becomes a hassle to manually rearm single tracks and not being able to muktitrack after the initial recording.
From the developer's response I do have hope that this will be changed somewhere in the recording. Till that happens I feel that the field recording/memo and continious recording of jams aspect is good enough to stick with it for the moment.
Hi all,
Developer Tug from 24 bit here. Someone in the forum shared the link to this thread and I signed up to help and respond with your questions. I did try responding yesterday but had no way of leaving a comment as the admin first needed to approve my account.
Here are some of the responses to the questions asked:
Landscape mode - Not for iOS version - An iPadOS Native version will support landscape.
Midi and stop start sync - Coming in next major feature update
AUv3 support - On our roadmap to release.
Multi track to single arming - It was a design philosophy decision to keep the limitation of the way 4 tracks would work with multitrack on first take then overdubbing. We have added to our log to introduce multitrack overdubbing for the future.
AirPods mic recording - Bluetooth mic recording is not recommended due to bluetooth latency. Playback is fine for AirPods but wired headphone / mics recommended for low latency.
Bounce tracks to free up others - You can go to your multitrack recording folder > press the file > bounce to stereo (bounces all 4 tracks to a single stereo file > import into a new project to have another 3 tracks available.
Central concept around firriest tracks running on different speeds and pitches - Works llike four track magnetic tape (i.e. the tracks all exist on one piece of tape therefore changes to speed etc. will naturally affect all tracks). There is a creative workaround. Record track 1 > pitch up > record track 2 while pitch is up > after recording put pitch back to 0 > track 1 recording plays original pitch while track 2 is now pitched down in relation.
File size - Issue logged by a few users > will look into a fix for this in a future update.
Control centre widget request has been logged.
48khz is good for pre master of electronic music. 96khz is useful for Film / TV or recording orchestra sessions for example.
Size comparisons - try setting Reel to 48khz to match AUM or even 44khz.
Pitch algo improvement - logged and will improve.
@tug24bit thnx for that. About airpods, sure they add latency, but that's not a problem for voice memos etc. It's useful to have the option, imo, and some recording apps do give that option.
Will the iPad version be a separate purchase?
Cheers
@tug24bit, thanks for the details.
Interesting implementation of bounce, good to know it’s there in some capacity.
Nice creative workaround to the pitch and speed between tracks limitation too. Cheers.
@Gavinski - AirPods are currently supported and work well if you are using for playback. They will also record but monitoring and timing become an issue if overdubbing.
Yes the iPad version will not be a port over from iOS. We are rethinking the design and how best to take advantage of the tablet space and format. If you want a pocket field version, I would grab the iOS version. If you want a more in the home studio version then wait for iPadOS or grab both as they will both serve well in different environments. I may be able to do offer something for current iOS users of the app when iPad comes out but I need to have a think and work out logistics and how I integrate that into the App Store etc.
First priority is to keep improving the iOS version before getting ready to release the iPad version.
@Gavinski There is a fix coming in a future update where you can turn off input monitoring when using AirPods. This feature currently exists for usb-c class complaint interfaces and instruments but is hidden when AirPods are plugged in. Future fix will show the input monitoring mode selection when AirPods are connected.
