Sketch Audio v2 update here, what to know. Now with cheaper, iOS-only license!

Hey everyone,

I also shared this info at our blog, but thought I'd post here in case anyone had questions. Enjoy!

The version 2 update of our plug-ins is finally available for our iOS users!

There are a few things worth knowing before you dive in. The main purpose of this update is so we can ship our products in all plug-in formats on Windows, Mac, and iOS. (Eventually I will update the synths too, I promise!) For existing users, the new plug-ins should behave pretty similarly to the v1 plug-ins but we did add a few new features I think people will like.

  • Light Mode, just cosmetic but still kind of fun.
  • Repeatable Random Engine, our random LFOs can optionally produce a repeatable timeline. This means every time you play back your song, the plug-in can reproduce the exact same randomness. We think it will be useful for delivering consistent mixes while still maintaining a random feel. The default is "pure" random, but if you hear something you like, you can go into the settings and lock the random seed to capture that timeline.
  • LFO Improvements, the LFO has nine total shapes now plus now phase offset and swing parameters.
  • All plug-ins have Auto Bypass now, nice to save CPU.
  • Expanded some parameter ranges.

Here are the details on the new licensing system. I think you will like it.

  • The v2 plug-ins have new App Store listings. They also register as new plug-ins in your host, so any existing sessions you have built around the v1 versions will keep working as-is.
  • In-app purchase licenses are now iOS-only. We got a lot of feedback that people wanted a cheaper, iOS-only license, so that’s what we did! I think you will like the new prices. You can make your in-app purchase from inside the standalone app. Here are the new prices:

    • Doctor Vibe: $13.99 USD
    • Fuzz Droid: $3.99 USD
    • Galaxy Brain: $9.99 USD
    • Hyper Boost: $9.99 USD
    • Scissor Hands: $7.99 USD

Make sure to purchase your in-app purchase license from the standalone app.

  • In-app purchase licenses include a crossgrade coupon to the universal license. If you want to use the plug-in on desktop too, you can claim a crossgrade coupon code in the standalone app that you can use at checkout on https://sketchaudio.com to add the Mac and Windows versions for the difference.

  • If you already own a v1 plug-in, you get a free upgrade to a universal license — desktop versions included, no extra cost. This has been our vision from the start and we want to honor the people who saw the value in our products. We also want to thank our OG users! Here's a short video walking through how to claim it:
  • If you purchase a license at our site, you can use it on iOS, you don’t have to pay again. Licenses purchased at sketchaudio.com are universal and will work on iOS. Just hit “Unlock Now” in the plug-in and follow the prompts in your browser to activate.
  • Installers for the desktop versions are now hosted on our site and not the App Store. Now that we’re shipping for Windows and new formats like AAX, AUv2, CLAP, and VST3, it’s just easier this way. We still ship AUv3 on macOS, just make sure to check that option when you run the installer.
  • v2 is iPad-only for now. We had to drop iPhone support temporarily during the rebuild. iPhone is on our list to bring back in a future update.
  • The v1 plug-ins are still available. You can keep using them but they will only receive maintenance updates going forward. New development will be focused on our v2 products.

So to summarize:

  • In-app purchase license, cheaper but iOS only. Includes crossgrade coupon.
  • Universal license, purchased at sketchaudio.com, activates on all platforms including iOS.
  • v1 owners get free upgrade to universal license. You can use our plug-ins on your Mac or even Windows now.

As always, hit us up if anything's confusing or broken. Thanks for being part of this!

P.S. Have a look at our new site: https://sketchaudio.com, you can even win a free plug-in if you sign up for our email list. Also universal licenses are 25% off through May. :)

Best,
Ryan

  • @sketchaudio everything about this is amazing. The updates, the open beta testing to iron out issues and hear feedback, and the extra effort to give existing customers not just V2 apps but universal plugins as well.

TOP CLASS. Kudos to you guys! 👏

Let’s spread the word on what an awesome development team Sketch Audio are.

  • Badass, this is how you onboard for a v2 and handle conflicting platforms.

    Class act.

I was a little bit sceptic (tsk tsk) to the sign up BUT then I remember all these fucking hubs more and more developers force on you with NI as one of the first (I think) and also the worst with all sorts of screw ups - I truly despise those things (almost as much as iLok).

A website is far better than that. Agree with most @gusgranite say above.

Edit: activating for desktop, no problem but on the iPad it doesn't work: spinning wheel but, before that I got an error message (I didn't save it, sorry) did a restart and now at least I got to the website but, as I said: spinning...

I'll try again later but I just got notice Reason14 is out, gotta take a look.

Edit2: Works now, sorry for the scare. And, thank you!

  • Thanks, guys I appreciate the kind words! This has been a massive effort for us. Basically 11 months to rewrite our entire tech stack for Windows and all plug-in formats. We built a completely custom framework, and I'm really happy with how it turned out.

This really is the beginning of a new era for us. I'm excited to finally be able to work on new products again, and we even have a free lineup on the way!

Yes this caught me out at first too. You just need to go back to the open app on your iPad and it completes the activation

Thanks a lot for this free update. Very nice way to migrate to another price structure, without forgetting the former clients : )
Your apps are beautiful and so well designed, btw.

It was actually there I got issues (when going back) and I got error messages in AUM I never seen before with many many letters and numbers whatnot. Mac installed and registered without hiccups. Sorted now as said, I just wanted to be clear.😃

  • I like the idea of adding separate iOS only license’s at a discounted rate, good on ya @sketchaudio

  • @sketchaudio Hi there! Any news on Blip Box? I thought it would get a ‘pan per instrument’ option. I hope it will get some more work, it is an amazing thing. I was surprised to see Blip Box and Phase Monkey has been removed from your website..?

Thanks @sketchaudio, very generous upgrade and an interesting workaround to do it. I wonder if the ‘install it from AppStore/purchase and activate via website’ option will be copied by other developers? Perfect for desktop developers who want to include a free iOS version with their desktop plugins.

It's not for use in the app store, it's for their website: after your create an account you redeem the code and the you can activate the new v2 app with the same credentials. The video shared in the first post explains the whole process in detail.

Thanks, yes, I know this is a common request! I keep meaning to revisit the synths, but getting this desktop update out the door has been my priority. Now that this is done, I do have the infrastructure to start thinking about Blip Box and Phase Monkey v2. Can't promise any timeline right now, though.

I followed the instructions a couple of weeks ago on galaxy brain and created the account on the site, but galaxy brain 2 on iPad is returning an error when I try to sync the license

It says my redeem code has already been redeemed, but when I try to long in to galaxy brain 2 via “I already own this” it says:

Ok, finally got it to work. Was not smooth. After loading galaxy brain as AUv3 in AUM, then hitting unlock, went to site and logged in again. It started activating but just kept spinning progress without completing. Eventually I went back to AUM and it unlocked for use, then went back to site and then it completed activation.

Not complaining and glad original owners were taken care of. Thanks!!! 🙏

I’m only posting the details of how it went and what finally worked for other users and the dev in case the backend process needs to be tweaked.

  • kudos for such a smooth user experience and the helpful video. I had all my FX apps updated in minutes
