Hit the iPad Pro lottery! (Well, sorta)
So I’ve had my 12.9” iPad Pro M1 w/1TB (5th gen) since 2021, and it has served me well, flawless actually, and has been my main device for all of my music production and visual art, while also being a tool I use at work, not to mention the web browsing, media consumption etc etc.
Some of you might remember that I got it as a reward to myself for quitting smoking (Which I’ve still been smoke free for over 5 years now!).
I bought it through my mobile phone carrier, AT&T, on their installment plan as part of my family plan, of which I have four lines/phones (4 family members on my plan) and yes, I understand I probably paid more for it this way over time, but it was easy, and I didn’t have to come up with the almost two thousand dollars up front.
Anyway, so here we are today, and I’ve started having problems with the USB-C port. At first I thought it was my wired earbuds, so I replaced those. Then I started having problems with charging the iPad, so I look at the cable I was using. Replaced that.
Then, when I was using brand new Apple brand cables and everything, I STILL had charging issues, where I’d have to push the cable end at an angle to get the little “charging” symbol to appear. However, all of the tricks started failing, and the battery finally drained the last time, with no ability to charge it again.
I was saddened indeed, but then I remembered something; while the iPad has been paid off for a couple years now, I did still have service on it through AT&T, and I did still have insurance on it, (as I do all my devices). So I decided to file a claim through ‘Asurion’ (AT&T’s insurance provider) - filled out the form, blah blah blah, described the problem; “usb-c charging port stopped working” hit enter and it came back with “you qualify for a replacement device. The deductible is $275 (gasp 🫢) and your replacement device is a 13” iPad Pro M5 w/2TB” whaaaaat! (I never coughed up $275 bucks so quick in my life!!)
So it only took 24hrs to have the replacement device in my hands, but basically I just got a massive upgrade from that 5 year old M1 iPad Pro, to this brand new (and yes, it is brand new, NOT refurbished as they sometimes do with phones and such; I had to peel those Apple strips off of the box, and it says so in settings; manufacture date March 2026) for only the cost of the deductible ($275)! 2 TB makes this is a $2600 device!
Needless to say, I’m a very happy camper this morning, and thought I’d make this post to share my excitement!
tldr: got a brand spanking new iPad Pro M5 w/2TB as an insurance replacement for my paid off 5 year old M1 iPad Pro. Only had to pay a $275 deductible!

Lol I'm excited on your behalf! 2tb!! I dream of that kinda storage.
Congrats Ed! That is truly awesome. I have the same 2021 M1 but 11" and same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago, but, in my case it was the adapter though. In a way lucky too as I'm not as smart as you, I always skip the insurance.
That's amazing, Edward! Congrats on the new device and the 5 years of being smoke free!
Thanks! 🙂 yeah, the 1TB I had was only just over half full, and have almost 1000 auv3 apps installed. Honestly can’t even find anything else (that I’d want, personally) to fill up the 1TB, so the 2TB will have me set for a good while to go!
Yeah, well I’ve always kept insurance on my devices, (I have the plan that covers all the devices on my family plan) as I’m pretty clumsy, and always dropping my phones (knocks on wood!) Over the years, I’ve had to make claims for replacement phones that I broke, and they usually replace with the exact model I have, and it’s usually a refurbished device.
This was the first time I’ve had to file a claim for an iPad, and was genuinely surprised at what they offered me. I guess this was the closest model they had to replace a 1TB M1.
Happy for you, brilliant!
Thanks fellas!
That is awesome!! I hope you make a lot of cool stuff with it!
Nice one!
Congrats! It blows me away seeing how many apps/routings and possibilities of the newer IPads! Really makes me excited to know that in a few years we'll have some extremely powerful audio apps.
Wow, over 1000 AUv3 apps….how do you remember what you have got? I have no where near that many and I regularly forget what I HAVE got, but that could be down to my age I suppose.
Congratulations on being smoking free, I bet you can taste and smell food better now👍
Mike
Simply amazing. What a blessing ! I’m sure you will have loads of fun with it.
I like to see the good guys win sometimes.
Thanks again guys
@rapidfire oh trust me, I have more that I’ve forgotten about than the ones that get any regular use.
That’s one of the things I love about FAC’s AUBE 2 and its keyboard extension; it has a random AU picker.
Congrats good sir! That’s amazing
yum! Good for you!
So wait, let me get this straight, if I get an insurance and stop smoking now (I mean tobacco, let’s not go overboard) then in 2031 I can get an ipad with 1TB of ram and an M125 CPU with 300 cores and 3 GPU’s I can heat my house off during cold winter nights?
Wow, what a win! That has to feel really good.
I’m intrigued about this insurance coverage. “Asurion” only available if you are an AT&T customer?
@Edward_Alexander never mind the extra storage , 1& 2 Tb ipad pro M5 have 4 performance cores (10 core)
whereas smaller storage versions only have 3 (9 core ) so extra congrats for your extra CPU performance.
Hehe maybe? If not, you’ll at least have clean lungs! 🤣
Well, they have a website where it looks like anyone can get coverage. Note the prices are a little higher than if it were the “add-on” coverage that AT&T provides with their phone/tablet plans.

And I want to point out that I’m not in any way guaranteeing anyone might get a new device like I did if they file a claim! As I mentioned, I was expecting a replacement of the same exact model and specs as the one I had insured. I’ve filed claims before with them on iPhones that got broken, and the normal is that they send you a replacement of the same exact model, and is usually a refurbished unit.
I got really lucky this time, and did not anticipate this surprise upgrade to a brand new device.
I was thinking that if my M1 was a 256GB instead of the 1TB that I had, then I probably would have received a 256GB M1 refurb as the replacement. Maybe the 1TB M1 wasn’t available, so they sent me the next best thing?
I’ll give you $350 for it lol
That is so cool I’m glad you lucked up that congrats
Thanks! It’s kinda surreal having this much processing power in an iPad.
Thanks, I definitely got lucky!
I knew you were another AUBE 2 user. That app really is a god send. I have lots of plugins I juggle and the tagging system is great for that. Especially the keyboard! Glad there’s a fellow AUBE super fan.
Congrats on the iPad. I’ve been very impressed with my new MacBook Pro and the m5 chips. I know it’s not 100% the same, but I’ve been impressed with all the M series devices I’ve used so far.
There are never any guarantees of course. Thanks for sharing your experience and contact link.
My 2018 Pro is chugging away still but may be getting a tad long in the tooth.
