Essentia

Using some of my latest app acquisitions on this guitar improv.
Strandberg Classic -> Nembrini Clon Minotaur -> Nembrini MRH810 -> Nembrini Delay3000 -> jAmp Convolve (this is a really versatile app by @janm31415 and will probably replace my IR collection.)
The Super J8 beautiful 'Beauty Pad' by @analog_matt was added as an afterthought - finally used this amazing synth on something.
Recorded and mixed in Cubasis 3 and mastered using the 'AUTO' button in Afterglow by @lewisleval - which works very well, I just had to turn the output level down a touch.

Comments

  • That’s a great improv. It reminded me of “Pulse”/“The Division Bell”-era Pink Floyd, mainly in the way the guitar and the synth sounded together near the end - and yes, Super J8 is a beauty I’m still learning to use in my own productions.

Regarding the Afterglow app, would you recommend it for mastering projects outside of the ambient style it was made for? I read Lewis LeVal’s great explanation about how it works in the app’s main thread, so I shouldn’t expect it to, but, since your improv is not a full band production but not full ambient either, I got curious. I guess an “AUTO” button in such a well made app is always tempting for me. 😊

  • Short but very cool sounding. Loved it!

  • Really amazing improv, @pbelgium . :) That's talent right there.

Yes, I'm in search of a Logic Pro 'Mastering Assistant' for iPhone, and in my limited experiments so far (including full band productions) Afterglow works well, needing just some minor adjustments to get a similar result to my own mastering - which takes a lot longer. I think the workflow is good and easy to use, comparable to Grand Finale 2 (no AUTO button), but I'm preferring results from Afterglow. The changes are subtle so it works better if your mix is well done (as it should be anyway). Hope that helps. Thanks for listening.

Thank you so much, that was very helpful. My own mastering takes forever too, and I was just starting to feel comfortable to use Grand Finale 2 as a replacement for many apps in my mastering chain; but the original analysis via an AUTO button makes Afterglow so interesting to me. Time is too short and I've been looking for apps that help my workflow by saving time and also delivering good results. Now Afterglow is definitely on the list. Thanks again and congratulations on the improv!

  • Love the playing and the tones. This gave off a Floyd vibe to me (division bell era).

  • Outstanding! I like how you brought in the synth pads at 0:18. It feels like an early Genesis composition. I can hear Peter Gabriel singing with this. Great playing. I was actually playing this along with Take Me Down. They sound really good together. Do you celebrate Memorial Day where you are? If so, have a wonderful day.

  • Thanks for listening and the kind words @jwmmakerofmusic @ecamburn, much appreciated.

Thanks Paul, your comments are always welcome. In South Korea we were celebrating Buddhas Birthday, so we all had a long weekend. I made this available to download, so feel free to have a mess around. Cheers.

  • Wow! So what comes next? This has to be a prelude …

  • I love the tone you dialed in for this one… there are some impressive runs that almost make me want to to pick up a guitar again and start chasing chops. It will pass quickly.

There are some interesting scales and chord changes going on here, I should develop them further. Thanks for listening, liking and commenting Andy, much appreciated.

jAmp Convolve is partly responsible for the tone, a good app worth messing with. Thanks for listening.

  • And the cry went up… ‘Too short’ ☹️
