Updated Turquoise DS

(Have moved this to its own thread from the Black Friday thread)

New Turquoise DS version out.

Includes a basic sequencer with patterns. Plus MIDI in and Out for the pads. And some audiobus improvements.

People have reported it being fine on iOS8.

I'm running iOS 7 (last version released before 8). All seems to work fine. Few crackles when running through audiobus into AudioShare initially but settled down and they disappeared. Didn't extensively test different chains or anything but I recorded into AudioShare via AB successfully.

Funny app. Some very noisy sounds. The matrix/sequencer is quite useful for quickly trying out all pads. Would also be useful for laying down all the pads evenly spaced, recording into a single audio file and then playing with creatively in a slicer like Egoist, Samplr, Abu, Sector or even Nanostudio's basic slicer.

Bad things:

  • almost impossible to up the tempo because you need to swipe up but the button is on the extreme top edge. Almost comic!

  • really needs better knobs / dials. So much swiping involved to change values

  • synth is ultra striped down terms of UI. Everything just numbers. Lends itself to randomly changing things. So all a bit pot luck.

But it does create some interesting sounds and it is effectively 9 instances of a synth in one app.

Haven't tried MIDI bug it looks like IN and OUT - but just note data for pads. Not any parameters.

Comments

  • I never bought this one. Interesting looking.

    (Dev's)

  • Another slight issue I have is not being able to determine or set which 'note' I'm playing. Pitch is just a number.

  • Thanks for the review Matt, sounds like the UI is a bit of a nightmare, but I like your idea of using it to generate an audio file for using with other samplers. Not sure about this one yet, hopefully they'll update their video so we can get a look at the new features.

I bought it too, just for the fact, that there are 9 synthesizers, an FX matrix and a sequencer and recording capacity that makes a wav file.
It has some nice fill in/sequencing features for the sequencer, lots of patterns.

Now the negative side is to make an adjustment....HORROR! it changes in 0.01...Yes in ONE HUNDREDS...which is NOT practical. If you want to move bpms from 120 to 60, take an afternoon off, because 120.00 will go to 119.85 to 118.39 in about 5-6 drags across the screen...Imagine going into 60BPM??? and the BPM is located in upper right corner, almost impossible to drag time up...lol

WHY is BPM in one hundreds? 120.73?
Aren't full numbers enough?..or one decimal...120.X? same with all the other functions?

If you could click on a full number for coarse and decimals for fine...OK, but it doesn't work.

There is no way to change values with keyboard (write in numbers that I found)

    Works fine on iOS8

And the pitch should be midi note related as Matt pointed out...

Unless this gets fixed, I would not bother, if it gets fixed, it is a great synth/drum machine.

  • At least it's better than before !!!
Looks like a demo or test version that got released too early!
There a lot of similar apps so nothing unique I think but can't use it much since there are no sliders and knobs to change params...

I'm starting to go off the idea of this one...I might get the new flock of insects Photophore synth instead...

This post absolutely nailed what it was wrong with the app (and how it could have gone so right). I'm not mad about Turquoise - I think I paid all of 2.99 for it. The developer has apparently continued to work on it by adding a sequencer and some neat features, at no additional cost to me.

But the design choices in that app are MADDENING. The "pitch" literally goes from 0-127 in range, but somehow does not line up with MIDI notes of those same values. Huh? The point about changing values to the hundredth place of decimals is also spot-on.

Also, I really thought this was a synth drum app, similar to SynthDrum Pads or the forthcoming Elastic Drums. It really isn't - it's capable of making some of those sounds, obviously, using the synth engine, but it's basically a haphazard synthesizer with individual notes laid out in MPC format. Again, I paid 3 bucks, so boo hoo, but I was surprised how different it was from whatever my expectations were.

  • I agree with absolutely everything written in this thread.

  • I concur but still quite like it.

  • I really like it a lot too, with its uniqueness and functions it is well worth the money;-)

I discovered that dragging left and right makes values of whole numbers go better..,still... needs to be fixed.

Needs a visual or audible metronome, otherwise you're in the dark recording ...

Wonder how would it sound with more waves: square, saw, S/H, that could be selected, cycling through them:-)

...and a Filter added in the matrix....?

I contacted the developer and he said he's working on an update to fix the "value dragging"

  • Hey,

Dev here. First thanks for your interest in Turquoise. This feedback is extremely helpful.

I realize the interface has problems. I'm in the middle of a major visual redesign which should fix a lot of the things mentioned above. But there are a couple things that might make it more fun in the meantime.

    Controls Agonizingly Slow

The controls do change the control numbers very slowly if you are directly over them, but if you drag left or right away from a number it increases the control change amount, so you can change the numbers in much bigger increments. Here's a short example video:

    http://mitchellcichocki.com/turquoise/video/turquoiseDemo.mov

As you can see if I drag far to the right, then drag up or down the control number changes much faster. There is no visual feedback for this in the app, sorry! but that will be corrected soon.

    Pitch Number

The Synth Pitch number is a midi note number (C5 = 60). It applies to the Triangle Wave. The Saw Wave is a multiple of the Triangle Wave so the pitch could sound way off if there is more Saw in the mix than Triangle.

    BPM Control on Sequencer

Yes this control is placed horribly but there is a way to actually use it. Drag down and to the left from it first, then drag up and down to change at larger increments. Intuitive? Not at all, I apologize.

A new demo video is coming soon.

  • @mitcki Good and honest feedback, which is also what you will mostly get from this forum :)

Thanks for explaining a few things and be sure that folks here really want things to be good/get better....
