Shoutout to the "Always Universal" Devs
Just wanted to take a minute and give a shoutout to folks like @brambos and @ka010 who always make their stuff available on both the iPhone and iPad. Even something like Battlestation Groovebox which Bram says isn't really meant for the iPhone is still available for those who really want it. For folks like me with more limited time who can't always break out the iPad, the ability to have everything on my phone for a quick sound design session is huge. The ability to easily bounce files and projects between devices is really what drew me into the Apple ecosystem to begin with. So I have a huge amount of appreciation for those who capitalize on that.
So let's hear it, who are the other devs in this category who deserve a shoutout?

Just a note, “universal” typically means plugins that can be used on iPadOS/iOS and on Mac/Apple Silicon, with a single purchase. Which is a smaller set of developers. But yes, I love having stuff available on iPhone, even if it gets awful fiddly at times.
Interesting. It used to mean iPad and iPhone. I guess Apple Silicon changed the lexicon?
The one's who include Mac compatibility get my money - great to have Solderbox and Battlestation in Live, for example, and if it ever happens - Mac compatibility for Ripplemaker would be an absolute dream...
Same. Even if it's a separate purchase, I'll buy the desktop version sooner or later. I've been eyeing battlestation too!
Shoutout to @Rob_Jackson_Music who makes separate builds for Mac and iOS as one purchase.
Apple use "universal" in at least two different contexts.
Universal Device Family, used to mean iOS iPhone and iPad. This was before iPadOS was introduced...
A Universal Purchase is when you have different platform versions of an app with the same name / ID and you make all the platform versions available as a single purchase.
I've seen some apps claiming to be Universal Purchases that are actually achieving cross-platform support using Mac Catalyst or Apple Silicon compatibility. In the latter case, you'll see something along the lines of "not verified on macOS" on the App Store.
Edit: Thanks @FizzyLizzy27 !
The difficult part for us Maccies, is knowing exactly what that compatibility entails. Some AUv3's for example only work in standalone mode, which is pretty useless, others work in Logic, but not Live, or vice-versa, and Live doesn't support MIDI AUv3's. Some load up in Mac DAW's, but have completely unusable UI's. Even asking the dev's seems to regularly bring up a 'don't know' response. I usually offer to test, but my offers are rarely even acknowledged.
If app descriptions included full details for Mac compatibility, then I for one would be purchasing a lot more apps. For now though, it's hard to make an informed purchase.
On the topic of Ableton Live, there is a known issue with some AUv3 plugins having "blank windows" when you re-open the plugin editor.
Initially, this was thought to be specific to the JUCE Framework UI components, then there was some, err... let's call it "confusion" as to who might be responsible for fixing it, with the developers (like me) and their customers (like you) caught in the crossfire...
However, it turns out it's actually possible to reproduce this blank window issue using the the standard AUv3 template in Xcode - i.e. not using JUCE at all, so that would suggest it's more of a Live issue.
Last I heard, Ableton were still saying they couldn't reproduce the issue...
In the meantime, all the macOS versions for my latest 30+ plugins now have to include a warning about Live, which kinda sucks as it's a pretty popular DAW. I think my latest KIT for example, might've been quite interesting to Live users.
I actually do around 80-90% of my development with the Mac version as it's faster, then switch to iOS, mostly for testing and to check for UI tweaks.
Exactly. One of the reasons I’m using @Rob_Jackson_Music apps on pretty much everything.
Be helpful if devs could put a warning on their sales pages for any apps that suffer from this bug. I notice AU Delay does this, for example. A shame, because it's a really good effect.
@oldsynthguy
Yeah... For all my latest 2025/26 macOS plugins, you should see this at the top of the App Store Description for the macOS version only. I've only just added this quite recently as I was (incorrectly) informed the Live issue was resolved. This goes back to (at least) November last year...
Unfourtunately the number of characters is very limited - I'm at the max here.
Same. My most used AU rn is dinasInth
FLSM works the same everywhere. More often than not I fire it up on my Mac over full desktop FL Studio due to the power in its directness.
Baby audio, Bram Bos
Aw thanks dude, I appreciate it!
Hey! I'm using Live as my main DAW but I haven't seen this with either my AUv3s or JUCE based plugins. Is this happening randomly or is it reproducible? I should note that I'm still on Live 11
@ka010 yeah, it's an odd one for sure.
Here's the discussion over on the JUCE developer forum:

Thanks!
