au fx app to freeze audio temporarily ?
i’m looking for an au fx app that can pass audio through it normally. but when i press a button, it grabs a small chunk of audio and just loops it over and over untill i press the button again. i know in the guitar pedal world there are some reverbs that do this. is there anything in ios like this ?

If you have Drambo, it has a spectral freeze module.

oh wow you guys are fast. thanks i’m gonna check those out for sure
Turnado and Miniverb can also do it.
Soundfruuze:

Glitchcore
Im trying to do this to quickly practice over guitar chords.
The simpler the app the better. I got Xenoverb, its pretty good for guitar and synth and has a freeze but I have not figured out how to get it to not stutter yet.
If I dont Mollilooper looks small and nice for it
If you want a very smooth sounding effect, I think Phonolyth Cascade will be a pretty good choice.
Crystalline from Baby Audio has a freeze toggle. So does SploshBox

I don’t know whether it’s a bug or feature of Sloshbox, but even if I have it up at 100% wet, if I press freeze, the audio is not fully frozen in the way it is with Cascade.
I believe Eventide Blackhole also does freezing.

Following up on this, any other freeze app that also does glissando like EHX SuperEgo or EHX Pico Deep Freeze?
RollBud does it on the roll mode 👍

A bug?!
Sheesh...
I think it's because freeze is implemented very differently, with Cascade being significantly more sophisticated. You'd expect that, right?, it's 4x the price.
In SploshBox, only the reverb buffers are "frozen", and the dry signal is allowed through when freeze is on. This is by design, so you can play over your frozen things. This is the way most freeze fx pedals work - the ones I've used, at least.
Cascade is much more fancy
It has a feedback loop around the reverb processing which will produce different results, plus some other stuff to add, if my understanding is correct, more "movement". I would imagine it's the feedback loop that gets frozen in Cascade, not the reverb buffers.
Lucky I gave it a 50/50 chance of being a feature then haha, thnx for clarifying Rob 😁
Does freezr fit the bill?

Frostbite was the first thing that came to mind for me as well. If you're already using Drambo, the spectral freeze option is definitely worth trying too. Curious to know which solution ends up working best for your setup.
Gosh me darnation,
Anyone of you have experience with one that freezes a guitar chord without sounding super duper wide and echo’y?
I guess I looking for something that smooths the edges in the cutoff of a loop of a sound without freezing a humongous reverb.
For practicing scales and stuff
Which ones did you try? Honestly most recommendations in this thread have not been good ones, for your use case. Cascade is the only thing I know of that'll get you a smooth sound. You can make it less reverby by dialing it in right. There's no other way. Most things mentioned in this thread will sound obviously like loops and won't be smooth (mollilooper for instance).
to @_smund and @Gavinski's point...
I think a lot of these gizmos (my own included) are mostly reverbs / hybrid reverbs / delays with an optional freeze function.
In many ways, those gizmos are doing way too much processing (IMHO), if say what you're after is something like the classic EHX Freeze stompbox.
In case you don't know, the EHX Freeze just has an effect level knob and a 3-way toggle to switch between a slow / fast envelope or to put the footswitch into latch mode.
Under the hood, it's basically just a really short looper that's always recording (until you enter freeze mode), with some DSP to smooth over the loop start / end so it sounds like "infinite" sustain. I reckon it's probably something I could throw together and get it decent-sounding in a day or so (*) and sell for $0.99.
But as I type this, maybe the agentic coding vibrations are already being fired-up and they'll be able to beat me to it in 10 minutes...
Joking aside, it is something I've thought about doing as it's a pedal I used a lot on guitar when I was still using actual pedals. I'd use something like that for sure.
(*) most of that would be trying to think of a name...
@Gavinski
TyTy
Do ya think it will be different then Xenoverbs freeze?
@Squishy - LOL!
Fun fact: I once went round to David Cockerell's house 20-odd years ago - he was the main designer for Electro Harmonix digital pedals.
We mostly talked about loopers and he was very cool and an amazingly clever guy.
Edit: seriously though, if we can't find an AUv3 that already does something like this, (surely someone has done it...) then I'll have a go.
Gauss is a “looper” that has that envelope/attack feature. You could probably wrangle it to do what @_smund is after, but the app is a lot more than that so maybe not the purchase they are looking for
It sounds like you just want a looper. Loopy Pro can certainly do this, with any length of loop.
If that's all you need @eross, I highly recommend @Rob_Jackson_Music 's SimpLoop. It sims ploops perfectly. It's like the worlds simplest, lightest, and most distraction free looper. It does a pretty good job of smoothing off the rough edges. Loopy is superb, but it's easy to get distracted with it.
I think Gauss is fantastic, but always felt it was more of a fixed length tape style looper in the Frippertronics vein. Perhaps it can do a freeze type thing?
If we're talking about the EHX Freeze, it's looping under the hood, but there's other stuff going on. Plus the loop length is really short - something like 50ms.
And you don't go into record mode manually. Instead, if you're in latch mode, you fade in whatever's been recorded "behind the scenes" when you hit the switch, then fade it out when you release it. There's also an envelope follower in play to decide when the record buffer gets overwritten.
So for a guitar player...
I think that functionality would be really tricky to reproduce with a conventional looper.
Yep Gauss is not the right tool at all tbh, or any other conventional looper I know of
Suggested name: Freezebox?
But that’d be way too easy to pronounce and spell correctly for a Rob app.
