You're Just Not Like That Babe - a collab with Unlink and Jankun
A very satisfying collab with really beautiful contributions from Unlink on the piano, and Jankun who wrote and arranged the orchestral strings.
Props to unlink for his beautiful playing. When harmonising the melody I moved the capo up and down until I found the right key for my voice, so the song is in C Minor, which is no sweat on the guitar with the capo on the 3rd fret, but not so easy on piano 😅
My original version of the song was recorded with acoustic guitar, but this version is much better, and far more evocative.
The vocal melody came to me in a dream, and it was in my head when I woke up. I had to keep repeating it mentally so as not to forget it, although the original line from the dream was "you threw it all away on a hickory wind", which I must have borrowed from Gram Parsons, so I changed the lyric 😆
Lyrics in the spoiler:
You threw it all away on the back of whim
You promised not to stray but you couldn’t resist it babe
That’s not how you were made
You're just not like that babe
I wanted you forever but you couldn’t begin
We flew around together but you couldn’t stay up there babe
That’s not how you were made
You're just not like that babe
You will be, a total mystery
So blind I couldn't see
That what you were to me
Was not reality
I wondered what to say with my head in a spin
You always found a way way with the walls closing on me babe
That’s not how you were made
You're just not like that babe
You threw it all away on the breath of the wind
You promised you would stay but you couldn’t get through it babe
That’s not how you were made
You're just not like that babe
If you, were there right in front of me
A truth I could not see
Just too illusory
An empty fantasy
You threw it all away on the back of whim
You promised not to stray but you couldn’t resist it babe
That’s not how you were made
You're just not like that babe

In what world a little gem like this doesn't get the bit of love it deserves.🤷🏼 I'll pretend to believe it was simply buried in an ocean of other posts and that people are busy with their lives ...which is probably more than half true 😁 .
Anyway, you should know that this beauty has at least one fan here. And I'm not saying this with the vanity of someone who worked on it. It actually feels like a privilege to have been invited.
When I first heard the duo vocals piano I was hooked and instantly moved. The song captured "perfectly" some of the imperfections of our beings. From fooling oneself in denial to the failure to understand a lover's true nature. From broken promises to painful self realization.
One of your most beautiful ones, should you ask me.
The fragility of your vocal rendition in tandem with @unlink 's delicate piano performance serves the track spot on.
Un petit chef d'oeuvre qu'aucune IA ne pourra jamais égaler. Bravo.
@JanKun "In what world a little gem like this doesn't get the bit of love it deserves." I certainly love it. I'm just now getting a chance to catch up with the music I've missed the past week. Being a huge fan of @richardyot 's music, I knew I was in for a treat.
Your orchestral work is spot on. (And I used Google Translate to translate the French. Well said!)
@richardyot I wish I had the lyric writing skills you have, mate. Honestly, while I'm decent at making instrumental music (which I just scored a two-piece commission for from a client), my lyrics are currently lackluster. You know what's odd? I was talking with one of my friends about coming up with a songwriting process, and she told me that I "make it sound like a science, which it's not". Well, I'll continue trying to write lyrics and continue to share those with you Richard. If you have a process which gets consistent results, could you DM me your process mate?
@unlink That really is beautiful piano playing.
Richard wasn't lying at all. In fact, I'd say you have a more delicate touch on piano than I do. Do you have a residency somewhere?
Or videos of your solo piano performances up somewhere like Youtube where I can watch you perform?
In short - brilliant work you three.
Thank you! I studied a bit of piano several years ago when I was a kid, then I stopped playing for a long time. Apparently, though, some of that knowledge stuck in my fingers
Seriously, I think I'm just an average piano player, but thank you. I don't have a channel where I record my sessions, although I've been thinking about doing that at some point. Synth tinkering and piano improvisation are a good combo.
❤️
To be fair, outside of SOTMC I haven't really been interacting with other contributions in the Creations section lately, so I can't really expect others to comment on my work. A forum is a social place, and the relationships are built on reciprocity. You get what you give
Thanks. A big part of it of course is that I've been doing this a long time now. You will know from playing piano that it takes time for skills to develop, and when you first took up the piano that your progress might have been slow at the beginning. It's the same with writing lyrics, it doesn't happen overnight.
The words for this song came to me relatively easily, compared to others anyway, which have often been more of a struggle. I think that's partly because what I wanted to say was clear to me from the outset - and that is that when you fall in love with someone you are often in love with an illusion, an avatar you create in your own head, rather than the real, fallible person that is there in real life.
Having that vivid mental image made the writing easier. But that was only possible because I was drawing on my own lived experience, as an older man looking back on past relationships. I couldn't have written this song when I was 25, because at that age I wouldn't have had the insight.
Every artist is different, so I can't tell you what to write about. All I know is that the subject which fascinates me is human fallibility (often my own), a subject that provides an endless well of material. Your interest may well be elsewhere, just find subjects that fascinate you.
I think you're a terrific piano player, and for me this performance really took the song up another level. My original guitar performance and arrangement were mediocre, it wasn't until you added the piano that the song really lived up to its potential IMO.
I agree, and I think you should start a channel. I'd love to hear what else you can play, whether improv, Classical, Jazz, Contemporary, you name it.
And, what you did in Richard's piece was definitely above average, mate. Take it from a seasoned pianist like me, you got the chops and skill!
Late to the party but a lovely track guys! This has to be one of the best collaborations here, everything works perfectly. As George Peppard used to say, "I love it when a plan comes together."
I’m getting something 70’s / 80’s from this. Everything is supporting the slightly fragile vocal. Great choice of aged piano timbre and use of arpeggios. And graceful string writing from the Chef himself. Nicely done.
Thanks for listening, and for the lovely comment.
Even later to the party but totally agree with all of the good comments above… voice, piano and strings in perfect harmony !
