Question re: LFO modulation in Prism Sequencer

I'm just getting started with Prism and having some problems setting up LFO modulation of synths with the LFO IAP.

@sfm has a video on assigning CC's, in which he uses the J8 synth as an example to show how to assign CCs to an LFO. However, this seems to work only because you can specify target CC's in J8's settings, so you know which CC to target. I assume this method would also work if you could find the target CC in a synth's documentation.

But I'm not able to connect an LFO to Dagger synth, which seems to allow modulation only through a host's AU parameter control system. And I also can't establish a connection to Sunrizer, which has midi learn but doesn't seem to publish default target CC's.

So this is my question. How can I use Prism LFOs to modulate targets in Dagger and/or Sunrizer? Is there some way to go through AUM's midi control system? If not, is it still possible to modulate Dagger? And is there some way to modulate Sunrizer with midi learn, bypassing AUM's midi control system? What might I be doing wrong?

Is there some reason why you don't want to go through AUM's midi control system to control the AUv3 parameters? With MIDI Control you can use any CC you like coming from Prism. As long as what you set for the AUM Channel/CC mapping matches what's coming from Prism, you're good to go.

Route MIDI out from Prism both to the app and to AUM Midi control so you can still send note to the synths. You may want to filter out CC's from the synths' AUM channel settings though in case it does respond to CC's and catch you off guard.

I don't know if Sunrizer responds to MIDI CCs in the plugin version. If there's some reason why you don't want to go through AUM Midi control, I could look further into it.

Thanks! All good now. I wanted to use AUM Midi Control but I made a stupid error setting it up. Then I started wondering why @sfm had bypassed AUM Midi Control in the example LFO video he made, and had issues setting up Sunrizer via Midi Learn (which also seems possible but gets a little tricky from Prism if you're modulating more than one target).

  • Great. 👍🏼
I never make much use of the CC modulation in Prism, but it's a pretty sweet setup.

  • 100% agree with @wim above. There is a method that I use when doing a MIDI learn on a target AUv3 when using multiple CC controls in Prism. If they already mapped and in use, and you run the transport you may have a bunch of different CC’s active and sending, but you can press a button to deactivate all of them on a track and then just activate the one you want, or add another, then do the MIDI learn, and press another button to reactivate all of them.

What button do you press to deactivate all of them and then reactivate all of them?

Here you go - hopefully it’s clear. Let me know if you have questions. The screenshot is from a recent beta version - I don’t think I’m giving away too much - the icons on the far left pane are slightly different.

    **Edit: there’s no #5, I can’t count apparently. 🤣

I'm just getting started with Prism and have the latest version, I think. I can't seem to find anything like either of the main sections in that pic. I can't find any CC Groups box, don't think there's anything like groups of CCs in my version. I have only the CC tab that shows 2 hardcoded CC slots [for PC and Pressure] and 2 configurable slots. And I can't find anything resembling those choices on the 4x4 keypad grid on the right side either. I guess I'll just wait for next version. . .

Oh - my bad. I reinstalled the App Store version and it has the same stuff, but I forgot to mention that the view in the pic is from after a CC Profile hs been loaded. The default view when you click on the CC button on the left will look different if no profile is loaded. The picture is shown below, which I suspect is what you see, so it makes sense. My understanding is that if you’re using CC controls in Prism, it’s best to load a CC Profile, and you can create your own, or load a pre-made one like Default [1x8].

If you click that little file folder icon it opens the CC Profile page and you can see the profiles there, and create and save your own.

    Default view:

Click the folder icon to open the CC Profiles page:

After opening the factory profile Default [1x8]:

Now you can click as was shown before and it should show the buttons and controls shown - this is the App Store version:

I hope this is not too much stuff thrown out for a simple question - I would also be happy to create a short video on how this works. It’s actually pretty easy once you know the basics of working in the CC view. Since Prism is very context sensitive, you’ll see the available buttons and controls change as you navigate, which makes for a less busy interface, but requires a bit of exploration.

The videos from Leo at Soundformore @sfm, which are excellent, do cover some of this including using CC controls as you mentioned but he moves pretty fast through some of it.

  • @EdZAB Thanks, very helpful!

I will need to dig around more and experiment. The only documentation for the LFO add-on I can find (in the v. 1.8 pdf) doesn't seem to cover much of this. For example, it doesn't show the CC Profile folder and says that CC LFO settings are stored in the Sound Profile. This thing is deep.

The key is getting to the point where you have a CC profile open. The quickest route is to hit the folder icon, then the Default 1x8 key pad. That'll get you to a starting point. Once you have that, you have access to the LFO's to modulate the CCs.

The basic thing with the LFOs is they appear when there's something that they can automate. Tap a CC and the LFO's will be available to assign to it.

    I hope that makes sense.
