Recommend an app, don't just say X is good
Just pick one, something that you get a lot of use out of because it..............................................
Don't just pick a new app and say it's groovalicious. This has to be an app that you would be affected by it's disappearance.
I'll go with Audioshare. My needs are simple. The complicated apps I have are used mostly to ward off senility. I tend to use a lot, if not all apps, standalone. Still searching for the perfect looper, but I sit, I play. Things happen and I just grab Audioshare, check levels and record. When I'm done its easy to shut it down and start playing again. Or if I've played for hours, to get one riff, it's simples to crop to the keeper bit. So I guess it's one of those apps that, depending on the use case, if asked, is it a ripper? I say, absofuckinlutely.

Koala sampler. From the file picker to editing samples through to the final output. It's just perfect.
Dark horse pick: ivcs3, it may not be a perfect sonic recreation of the Ems synthi, but it truly feels like a full vintage synthesizer on my ipad. It's amazing.
Samplr. I wouldn't be the musician I am if it wasn't for Samplr. The amount of creative energy that flows through me every time I play with it is why it is #1 out of about 200... If it was a stand alone touchscreen device with the amount of memory of an iPad and the ins and outs of a typical interface, it would be 2-3 grand.
I suck at hyperlinks on this forum: http://samplr.net/
I have four more desert island apps, but you want one. Samplr it is.
DecentSampler. Need a guitar sound? Maybe a saxophone? Glockenspiel? HurdyGurd? It’s a Google search away, and they’re all community made/submitted. Only gripe is the hard drive space it starts to take up, but it makes sense due to the quality of the sounds.
Walls by Klevgrand. It covers all the types of reverbs I can think of (room plate spring hall etc etc) and does them really well. My goto when I need some verb.
@sevenape been waiting a while for ivcs3 to pop on sale as I know I’ll prolly want allllll the IAPs as well. Seems fantastic. Will continue to look forward to the month I’ll lose getting lost in learning that app 🤙
Not counting a DAW (Logic, in my case), I use OneShot by Klevgrand and AuDelay by @Rob_Jackson_Music more than any others.
RingsFX and Blackhole. I could spend hours noodling tinkling plucks and bells in that enormous cave of a reverb.
Gigfast Lite
iphone, iPad, Mac OS ... your choice. Standalone or plug in. Easy to use and sounds tremendous IMO.
Mela. It's like having a zoia on your ipad. Custom audiofx, custom midifx. Pair it with the customizable ui of Loopy Pro and the sky is the limit!
Oh my god I’ve spent so much money on the IAPs!!!!
Samplr is magic, but it would still be Gadget for me. Covers almost everything you'd need (in some cases quite poorly 😂), but it just stays out of the way and lets you progress your ideas. I've finished way more music in that focused environment than any other.
My favorite workflow honestly, is Koala multi instanced through AUM. So another vote for Koala.
AUM, I wouldn't be making music if it didn't exist...
Rymdigare by Erik Sigth. Improves the sound of almost everything and has possibly the most delightful user interface on iOS.....I wonder if Frank will get home in Rymdigare2...:-)
It’s a relatively new app but in the few months that I’ve had Outgrowth I’ve gotten a lot of use out of it.
A superb sampler that has been steadily improved by some fantastic updates.
Fauve
Only music apps @Ailerom ?
GeoShred… I guess I could use it even without AUM.
Midi Guitar 3... I can't play a keyboard with more than one finger, but playing synth sounds with almost the same ease as regular guitar effects ? That is priceless to me.
Auxy Studio, because it's "groovalicious". LOL! But yeah, Auxy Studio's absence would screw me over bigtime. Of course I have FL Studio Mobile and also Korg Gadget and Koala Sampler as well, but Auxy Studio is the quickest for me to finish tracks. Plus, it barely drains my phone's battery when I'm out and about creating music.
Auxy has most of the sounds I could ever need. For the sounds it doesn't cover, I recently discovered its melodic sampler where I can record oneshot samples in Koala Sampler (now that Koala can host AUv3 plugins), export that to a project folder, and bulk import said oneshots into a folder within Auxy Studio itself. (This is how I got the "Irish" sounds from Beathawk into Auxy when producing my track "Slainte" off of the "20 Years Ago" EP.)
The only "downside" to Auxy is it is a subscription price of $6 monthly, but that covers slow-but-steady development and an ever expanding library of sounds hosted. A "double-edged sword" of Auxy is it requires an internet connection, which does keep the initial download size rather miniscule. Auxy Studio does have some other limitations, but luckily those aren't too limiting in the least.
Another good thing is Auxy has a built-in "master effects" system for quick exporting of demos of tracks. I turn those off when exporting the final unmastered track so I can polish it in Cubasis 3, but when doing client work, it helps to have an "instant mastering" solution within Auxy itself so I can convey the ideas across to the clients and it sounds pretty decent.
Not at all. I was actually going to start with a lyric app I use. Go for it. My plan though was to pick one of you must haves and through your words help others see how important it can be.
Like this. After reading that I'm off to check it out. And on top of the compelling dialogue it's groovalicious. Just the sequencer arrangement reminds me of some other apps but can't recall names. BAM might be one, but it's perhaps more full featured.
AUM > or = Mela
Mela for midi wrangling/morphing. AUM for all the routing
Maybe clunky and inefficient but basically with add ons between the two it’s a build your own Daw composition environment.
I hope to master Drambo / Loopy to see what I can do - someday.
(Also mozaic)
Pixquare
It’s not just my favorite art app on iOS - it’s my favorite app period. Pixquare is for pixel art so the capabilities are based around that art style. It’s really responsive with Apple Pencil, and I like the custom brushes. You can use tilesets, which let you easily make environments with gridded backgrounds. Animation features are solid.
The best part is the workspace. You can make any menu bar a floating window. So color palette, tool selection, or reference images can freely be placed around the workspace. There’s some really handy and fun controls in there too, like a “joystick” that you can assign tools to (so flicking up gives you the eye drop color selector, flicking down pulls up the paint bucket, etc.). There’s also a “trackpad” area with double tap, swipe, etc. where you can assign actions to gestures.
There’s an example workspace on iPhone. I wouldn’t typically use it on iPhone but it’s universal and everything syncs seamlessly.
The dev is also great. He’s super quick to fix bugs, really active in their discord (which is a great community), open to feature suggestions, and an all around great person.
To answer your question @Ailerom on it being a game vs an art app: it’s not a game, but used a lot for making games.
Excellent! Yeah, just drop $6 or whathaveyou to check it out for a month and lmk what you think mate (either here or in DMs if you wish). And if you've any questions about Auxy Studio, ask away. ☺️
You're making me want to have another go at it.
I got frustrated trying to replicate my well worn AUM flow in it.
Why would you unless there's something lacking in your well worn AUM flow that Loopy can address?
I'll be honest.
I'm kinda stuck. I can make a groove in almost any sonic pallet and more than one genre, BUT I have a hard time translating that into a composition. That stems from 2 things. My AUM sessions often start out as a sort of "lets see what happens if I do this". I've been learning some arranging and song structure to cure part of that. The other problem is everytime I stare a piano roll and try to plink out something deliberately I lose my musical mojo.
Sheet music from all my years singing in choirs is more familiar AND is less adherent to a grid. With AUM I have freedom but no direction. With a traditional DAW I have the linearity I'm looking for to evolve something but not the technical ability (yet)
So the long and short of it is I'm kinda hoping that Loopy might bridge that gap. Arranging without the adherence to a piano roll DAW.
I hope this made sense. Thanks for asking.
Great answer. 😎
It does sound like you could benefit from loopy if you keep to a simple setup and not get lost in all the twists and turns of the awesome customization options.
I’ve built complex templates, but these days, I almost start from a totally empty project, set up audio and MIDI channels very similarly to setting up in AUM. I play some, then add audio clips as I gel on things that I like. Or not.
I can honestly say I was stuck in the same rut you describe. Beta testing Loopy (before MIDI clips were even available) did more for freeing me up and improving my chops and creativity than anything else has ever done.
I could go on, but that’s not what the thread is about. If you do decide to explore Loopy, you might want to start a thread.
What I do is replace the plugin with an instance of StreamByter instead. That preserves the channel and its FX and routing.
Channel presets would be nice though for sure.
handy tip @wim
