26.5.2 update: iPad M1 not starting, years and >200Gb of projects/files lost 😭

This is totally unnecessary post but I'm so in need of some "feel with me".

Started the update as usual but while my phone (se2020) got finished the iPad was just stuck on the apple. Long story short: tried everything but in the end I had to erase it for it to accept the iOS install, I guess the interrupted update really fucked things up.

Trying to see it from the bright side: maybe I can carefully install what I need instead of 900 different music related apps.

I had AudioShare and AUM at over 100Gb and I've meaning to go over it but, not like this.

Literally back to square one.

  • I think something has been broken for a long time, it's like a completely different experience now and it's been something I have blamed 26.5 for. Noisy start ups with stand alone apps, not being able to properly move icons to name a few issues that are now gone. Every cloud has a silver lining as they say.

Ahh man, sorry to hear that. šŸ˜•

You don't have another device that you can use with the Setup Assistant to at least get you a head-start? And ... no iCloud backup?

I have 3 more (iPhone, iPad Air and the Mac) but they refused to join forces and after several tries I gave up, I have no clue why it didn't work as it was suggested.
I'm on the same network so that's good but I'm starting to realise stuff being lost like all my Procreate projects and all presets I've done for various plugs, that kinda hurt but it is what it is and honestly, there was a lot of crap I wont miss.

I can't stop but wonder what messed my iPad up, I think it's been quite a while something been wrong without me realising.

  • They really blows. I hope you find a way to recover your stuff.

Thank you, I appreciate that but unfortunately, it's permanently gone. There might be some presets saved in iCloud but I will take those as a surprise whenever they show.

Thanks Jim, I appreciate it. Shit happens!

  • It’s the worst feeling. Gutted for you.

  • Sorry to hear Ulf. We should all be backing up regularly. Hard lesson to learn though, as I had to restore my own icloud from scratch a few months ago too, and haven't backed it up since lmao. Still using iCloud, which covers a lot, but I should be manually backing up my Audioshare stuff to a drive - all my aum sessions, aum recordings and aum presets especially. I'm terrible at that kind of admin.

iCloud is a shit solution btw if you have a lot of stuff on your device. It took me nearly a week to for my iPad to finish backing up from iCloud, forget how much data there was, maybe a terabyte. iCloud was saying it'd take a few hours or a day or something, but nope, took a week. Reason is, I think, that your internet provider will start throttling the speed. Whole thing's a major pain in the nuts, tbh! The whole thing makes me want to keep less stuff on my device. Fewer apps, and definitely need to be better at deleting old photos and vids, it's all the vids on my device that are the main problem.

Anyway, hope it's not too painful for you, zen up I guess!

  • If You’ve got access to a Mac it’s possible to update what seems to be a non booting device, just make sure to NOT to restore it as that will clear everything. (I had this happen to an iPhone about 7 years ago…).

So far zero issues with 26.5.2 on M5 Mac Book Air, iPhone 16 and 11ā€ M1 iPadPro.

It is possible, you can try, but it may not work. In the case I mentioned above, I tried the update from Mac a bunch of times, it wouldn't work, in the end I had to accept that restore was the only remaining option.

Thank you! It's not the first time (many years ago I had a Windows total meltdown) but feels equally shite very time.

    @Samu @Gavinski
    Thanks for the input.
Since it seems it was something broken I'm not sure even a backup would have saved it. I did try everything possible and it wouldn't accept the install if I didn't choose to erase the disk first (I used iMazing). From now on though, my new middle name is "Mr Regular Backup" 😁

Finally, as I say above: it's like a new machine now.

I know Finder on the Mac can repair a bricked iPad/iPhone and if that doesn't work Apple Configurator is also worth a shot.
Or take a trip to local Apple retailer for assistance, but as that is already 'too late' I can definitely empathize with the feelings as I've been there myself...

...sometimes a fresh re-start makes one see things differently :sunglasses:

  • Sorry to hear about this @Pxlhg, it really is shit when tech lets us down in this way.

The only benefit of having iPads with the lowest amount of storage as I do is that you’re forced to backup more often but even then an awful lot can be lost so easily.

On the related subject of long term backups, what are the best options people use? Anyone have experience with M Discs? Huge lifespan, in theory, but I wonder how long before there are no optical drives available to read them?

All my documents (Pages, Numbers...) are saved on icloud, and i manually copy them on my NAS every week.
Adobe files (Illustrator, Photoshop) are saved on Adobe Cloud.
Music apps, i use Korg gadget and Cubasis, with projects saved locally on the Ipad. I simply copy the projects folder on icloud.

I know, nothing fancy, but it works for me

oooh man that is bad... I fell U, :( happened once to me too, lost backup had drive where as 10 years of music, photos from my wedding and lot other stuff ... still hurts a but after 25 years

be strong, nobody stole your creativity, you can rebuild ! Wish youy tons of creativity for new things !

  • The one iPhone I didn’t have back in the day was an LG-V10. It was cool, but it eventually boot looped and I lost a LOT of photos I’ve never been able to recover. I’m with you, @dendy and still bitter about it ~10 years later. Sorry for the PITA the process is @Pxlhg

  • Yikes! Sorry to hear this ... have suffered data loss in the past and it sucks bigtime :s

  • I had a similar experience about 3 months ago: accidentally deleted a whole month's worth of work, about 350Gb of video files (I didn't have the space to back them up).

I spent 4 days with data recovery software, and eventually got most of it back. Just a couple of videos were unrecoverable and had to be redone, which was OK in the context of a whole month's worth of lost work.

Have you tried doing a wired/cabled restore from another device? Eg, I was able to get 99% of my apps/documents installed when transferring/installing a new iPad mini7 from my old mini6

  • That sucks man…
    Updates always stress me…
I’m still sore about what Catalina did to my External HD and graphics card driver šŸ˜‚

Thank you all for feedback, backstories what not, I really appreciate it.

I've decided to do a slow and very selective build up regarding what apps gets reinstalled.

I've done the same, just installing old stuff when I realize I need it and that it's not installed. Makes you realize how many old apps you have that you don't really need or use any more.

  • What’s the best way to make sure this kind of thing doesn’t happen? I’m not too concerned because I keep most everything in iCloud but hadn’t thought about stuff like AudioShare files and such.

Losing data is always such a bummer. I had my first encounter with it late last year when I was trying to format a USB Thumb Drive, but accidentally selected the external drive I use for my music library (nearly 2.5TB of files) and ended up formatting that drive instead. Fortunately I had a backup, but it had been at least 2 or 3 months since the last backup. So I ended up having to go through and find which files weren’t included in the backup, then manually re-add each one of them back onto the active music library drive (I have a lot of backups of my music collection: one drive stores my current actively listening-to library, then there’s a backup of that drive, then I have another heavy duty external HDD where my complete music library is stored (which is pushing 4TB at this point,) and a second portable (slow) HDD for backing up that library.)

Then once my new computer arrives next month, I’m going to work on consolidating all that stuff onto a couple 8 and 12TB HDDs. Then I can free up those SSD drives for things like sample libraries and stuff, since those same drives have nearly tripled in price now. Plus, SSDs aren’t a recommended format for long-term backups. I ended up shelling out the money to max out the storage on my new computer….Apple’s storage prices are insane, but right now, jumping from 1 to 4TB of internal storage isn’t much worse than the cost of a good external ssd.

  • The pain is real! Ouch!!! That's a lot of data! And as a fellow member of the 'data loss club for humans', I salute you. Lost a complete ipad a couple years back, with years of work saved on it.

Now, Save to DropBox regularly, move files to my PC, and then two backup drives.
Or AudioShare, save to desktop -> backups.
