The Phil by Philip Vincent (Released)
https://apps.apple.com/app/id6762276492
The Phil is an AUv3 only great sounding Karplus Strong physical modelling instrument, with inbuilt arpeggiator that interacts with any note you send to it.
Simply open the app inside your favourite host (AUM, Logic etc) and see what The Phil can do for you.
The Arpeggiator is unlike other arpeggiators, it uses clever math to choose note and repeat amount to get you out of those boring up, up, down, down, up, down, down, up traps.
Details:
Universal: Yes
Minimum OS version: 26.2

The Arpeggiator is unlike other arpeggiators, it uses clever math --- isn't this literally every arpeggiator/IOS app.?
Min OS 26.2
Seems odd for an app like this… 🤷🏻♂️
Such little effort on the app description or screenshots on the App Store listing doesn't inspire confidence.
Agreed. At least he probably wrote that description himself instead of using Chatgpt or Claude. But yeah man, that whole package looks so low effort, damn, haha
I’m waiting for one that uses not-so-clever math
I was taught clever math by my parents when I was about 10.
For example, what is:
39 + 23
In your head, you convert it to:
40 + 22
Much easier, right? Now that is clever math
Well, when you're 10 years old it is.
Doing addition before doing addition
makes sense
Best app name ever
A billion % concur.
Limits sooo many users
It's a classic gotcha. Xcode will default to a minimum target of whatever the latest SDK version you have on your development Mac. It's pretty much the first default setting you change when setting up a new project.
Unless the app absolutely needs a feature that's only in 26.2 or above, which I think would be highly unlikely.
Interesting… thanks! You’re always good for a peek behind the curtain 🤙
hi gang, Phil here, maker of The Phil. I had no idea Loopy Pro actually like auto did this, my brother in law flagged that stones were being thrown, so I thought I'd come say hello, so you can throw them straight at my face.
First up, I am just one person, this is at best a hobby for me, building an app to be the instrument I wanted because I couldn't find a way to string together existing apps to do it. There is a fairly big (to me) financial hit in even getting the app on to the appstore which is why this app has a price tag. The rest of my apps are free. I suggest you try the one called StringVest.

As Rob Jackson says the 26.2 thing is an Xcode default thing, I am not in any way a seasoned appstore developer, so apologies if I didn't change a setting.
@Gavinski honestly mate "low effort" for the images, probably fair criticism, but also, the app doesn't really have much else on it. It's a single page with 8 knobs and a dropdown menu. I will take it on board and write a more extensive description though. I was just so frickin knackered after getting the thing actually accepted on the store that it just kinda dropped away into the gap between work, family, late stage capitalism etc.
The maths is clever though, or maybe I am just dumb.
ok fark so writing a new description actually involves launching a whole new version of the app on the appstore. JOY
Don’t sweat it. I don’t care too much about app descriptions myself beyond the first sentence. After awhile, it’s just phonetic garbage.
Hey Phil, try not to take any of the criticism people made in this thread personally, as none of it is intended to be. It's worth bearing in mind the context too. There has been a flood of new apps recently, due to AI making it easier to put products out. All these new paid apps are products, asking people to part with their cash, so people do make critical comments. Best to take it as constructive criticism. Btw, threads like this are not auto published by the forum. That Pixel guy who posted about the app is just one of several people here who keep an eye out for new apps and post when they find things that are new. That's actually a valuable (free) service to devs, and many scratch their heads as to why devs themselves are often so bad at promoting their own work.
Anyway, welcome to the forum!
I have made weird music for like 30 years, criticism is mostly water off my back, but sometimes you read things and go, yeah thats not actually critique is it, its just throwing stones. I think some of the points in this thread do that. I appreciate the AI "boom" has created a lot of new apps, but I hope we don't all forget that probably even behind those apps there is still a person trying to make something. Or am I dreaming?
I think most devs (at least I do) feel kinda awkward self promoting on forums like this. I don't have the time to actually inhabit the forums enough for it to not feel like a shallow corporate shill of a move, so its a catch 22. I did approach you for a review too @Gavinski as that felt like a good way to actually promote my work, but appreciate you are somewhat swamped as one of the only ones out there fighting the good fight in this lil niche.
FWIW I am working on a V1.0.3 with updated info and stuff, I can't actually work out how to upload a video to the appstore, I can just do screenshots, or maybe I am just being blind / stupid. I have recorded a walk through which will be up on YouTube soon, so maybe I can just redirect to that.
Enjoy your days!
@decibelboy congrats on the release, welcome to the forum, and thanks for pointing out your other app StringVest. I love a little groove box app to program in my rare downtimes at work.
Sorry to derail the thread, but would it be possible to update SV so that sound passes through even when the iPhone is set to Silent Mode? Many thanks, if so.
Hey @decibelboy thank you for dropping in, and reminding us that there's a human being behind the app.
Hey @timelining I actually can't, it's a "feature" of how web audio, which is the engine behind all of my free apps works on iOS. It's basically running html via Safari but wrapped into a nice app package and that's what makes it not output audio when it's set to silent mode.
This is obviously very annoying and even more annoying on my main website (vestsoundworks.com) where I have an entire like live studio of instruments which you can install as a pwa app on your device.
@Edward_Alexander thanks for saying that, making stuff is really hard!
Hi @decibelboy, thanks for chiming in. If it's not a secret, I'd be genuinely interested in at least the vague branch of mathematical cleverness. I'm guessing something graph / probability based, or am I totally off?
And... yes, having to submit a new version just to update the description is a pain. Beyond me why you can't just submit an updated description only for review. I reckon that's been on their backlog for 15 years now...
Also, App Preview videos are a pain to get in the right format so they'll be accepted - even stuff like the right fps is a potential gotcha, and it looks like it's worked, and then it doesn't.
My jury is still out if they're worth the effort, especially for music apps and the 30 second limitation x 3 clips. I guess you can easily sell a f@rt app in 30 seconds, but I'm not sure about an 8 voice poly synth...
I tend not to bother and hope folks will check out indie reviewers on YT like Gavinski, Jade and Doug at The Sound Test Room.
Some devs do really good ones though - Analog Matthew springs to mind with the AudioKit Pro stuff.
Finally, doing a video with your app submission can really help with some of the typical rejections you get with AUv3 / App Extensions. Like literally show it being loaded up in GarageBand or something like that. That said, I still got the classic background audio rejection with my latest app, which goes something like this:
And while I'm on, it's still taking anything up to a week (in my experience) to get a v1.0 app approved for sale despite the "within 48 hours" when you submit. Sigh...
Hey @Rob_Jackson_Music thanks for replying! The math is probably not as advance for some people as it was for me / the people I was writing the description for, as I assume that the majority of users of ios music apps are not generative music understanders like me / the people on this forum.
It is euclidean at its core really, the Bjorklund algorithm. It felt very human to me, not just 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 on the divisions, which is cool sometimes, but I wanted something a bit more VAVAVOOM in the rhythm.
I have seen done in some other places too, but I also split the control of the amount of notes from the range of notes (whilst not having to actually play more notes on the input "keyboard", which to me felt very similar to how I play (or wish) I could play guitar. IE you can hammer away super fast on the root note, then switch out to play up and down the scale whilst maintaining the rhythm. Felt like a very expressive way to play with just two knobs. There is then a little bit more maths when the note choice, once you get above 50% on the note knob, it will start adding in octave up and down notes in the pattern, so you end up with a two or so octave range at the high end.
The other fun bit of maths is away from the arpeggiator and in the two humanise controls, note and string. Note will slightly vary the pitch of the note and string will slightly vary the main controls of the synth, so the timbre of the string changes per note. This was me trying to mimic the subtle changes you get on a "real" guitar, violin etc.
I don't think my version of this sounds as good as some others I have heard, but the whole package with how it syncs with midi was important too.
FWIW I have submitted a new version to the appstore now addressing some of the notes raised here except the video bit, which I am about to start editing now, so will come back and spam you all with that when it's done!
As promised, feature video!
How do the kids say it? "This is sick AF!" (Bought!)
Woo!
Yeah, rules me out unfortunately, but like very often on here, it did make me open a ‘forgotten’ app I haven’t used for a while and have a mess around with - in this instance the Resonator that comes in https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/spectrum-synthesizer-bundle/id1467384251 and some lfos.
Just to be clear you don't need 26.2
I love the spectrum bundle it was the app I used most (the red one) before building this one. Those apps are all straight lifts of the mutable instruments original code, and sound great.
” That's actually a valuable (free) service to devs”
@Gavinski .. thank you for stating this!!!
No probs Nino, people like you and Pixel do a huge amount of (presumably mostly underappreciated, taken for granted, and unremunerated) work that's beneficial for both devs and app buyers 🙏
Nice demo Phil, sounds great, very 90s IDM vibe to me
To clarify I meant no offence by saying it was a bot and happy to be corrected and genuinely amazed that humans do that. As you say, it's a great thing for people.
I am definitely discovering of late that I'm really into 90's IDM sounds. I've got an album out on a few months and that has been the general response to that too.
