Fiddlewax Blue is Free for Education (and everyone else)

Hi All,

While recently the majority of my effort has gone into Fiddlewax Pro, it seemed important to go back and bring Fiddlewax Blue up to speed with some bug fixes, interface improvements, and compatibility with the latest iOS and iPhone/iPad devices (still working on getting Audiobus support integrated, but not quite yet).

And as I was putting the update together I realized that my real hope was that Fiddlewax Blue would end up in classrooms as a learning tool for new musicians. And since most schools have super small budgets for software/apps, I decided to open it up and make it free.

And an overview video for those who want to see it in action:

Cheers,
Adam

  • Very well done. That's the spirit! I wonder why is not more music in school age, at least here in Spain.

    Good luck and thanks.

  • Sure thing. :)

The interface should translate all text based on device language for English, French, Spanish, and German. Hope that helps it be useful in lots of places and not just the US/UK.

Would love to hear what non-english users think (and if any translations need reworded).

  • Thanks, Adam. I'll help spread the word.

Excellent. Added to the resources in the iPads in Music Education FB group. Thank you @adamkumpf

BTW: Anyone who has an interest in using iPads in music education is welcome to join the group. (There is a challenge / response for joining to keep spammers and bots out mind, but really a formality)

    Group is here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/iPadsInMusicEducation/

  • I have Fiddlewax Blue as well as it's Big Brother, purchased because of the great response from forum members but also because of the great response from the Adam. However, I haven't really properly gotten into either one yet. I seem to have a small set of apps that are in my 'well this is obviously not to be trifled with I better put it to one side until I can dedicate some time to it' pile. Completely separate beasts or better to start with Blue and move on up thereafter?

Fiddlewax Blue and Fiddlewax Pro are totally separate apps (and pro does a whole lot more), but their overall approach of scale/chord integration and the design language do overlap a bit.

Blue is super simple and lets you progress over 8 levels from a very basic palette of six chords up to analog chords and notes that can be quite expressive. You can also record your voice to create custom instruments which is a lot of fun (especially for kids).

Pro goes far beyond Blue and allows for multi-channel looping, drum kits, additional scales, Audiobus, Inter-App Audio, state saving, basic effects, 90 minutes sessions, etc... And Pro is built a lot differently on the backend to work directly with low-level components which makes it run a lot faster.

  • Very cool, Adam. I bought it awhile ago and I remarked at the time that if it had AudioBus, it would have been one of my favorite live VirtualMIDI controllers. I've since moved on to use things like CoreMIDI controllers and DAW's with some MIDI built in, but it's still a very cool app. I'd like to revisit it as a composition tool, also.

Pro is so cool as a looper/sketch tool, that I sometimes forget you can use it as a live controller like I used to with Blue. Oh, and Blue is compatible with iPhone, also, which is one advantage it has :)

  • High five. Mr T did it for the kids and so does @adamkumpf.

  • Kudos to you, @adamkumpf for doing this for education :)

BTW, I love the experimentalism involved in Yellow too :)

Cool Blue App & a nice gesture.
I've had this for some time and it still gets occasional use.

Nice and clear design, fun sampling and logical complexity progression.
I particularly like the analog chords section. (kinda wish this could work with MIDI though)

Audiobus support would be a big bonus if possible in the future :)
    Cheers

The german product description text in the app store is a little bit ... on the funny side.

  • Err - what's an "analog" chord please?

  • Wow, this is a lot of app for free! Great concept and something I wish was a available when I was learning. Thank you! This may push me over the edge to buy FiddleWax Pro as well.

In the "2. KEY CHORDS & NOTES" section it would be awesome if the notes in the chords were highlighted as the chords were played. Seeing all the chord notes is the context of the full scale is much more informative for beginning musicians then just getting a list of note names IMHO.

  • This is a super kind gesture. In my 5 minutes of playing it this has easily replaced a couple if not more apps. Midi is such a great feature, thanks for this great app.

  • Thanks for the free app. I'll probably end up getting the Pro version after trying this.

  • Thanks for all the kind words. Great to hear so many people excited about Fiddlewax Blue.

@Matt_Fletcher_2000 - "Analog Chords" in the app are chords that you can slide between. You can smoothly transition between any of the common triads (major, minor, augmented, and diminished). It's especially fun to try different paths between chords and explore what different moods/feels result.

@klangsulfat - Anything specific to change in the German description, or does it just need a complete re-write? More than the description, do the German words in the app itself make sense?

@BigDawgsByte - Lighting up the related notes as you play would be nice. I'll look into how much cpu overhead it adds.

Also, a few people have said that the app doesn't make any sound, only to realize that their phone is set to silent (with the physical switch on the side). The way Fiddlewax Blue renders audio forces it to take the ringer switch into account, but that can be confusing. I'm hoping to add some kind of feedback in the next update to make that easier to sort out.

  • For educational purpose a re-write of the German words could make sense (in app as well). It's not far out but a child could get confused

  • @Peanutcram - Okay. I'll look into getting the German text re-worked. Probably at least a couple weeks out, but I'm on it! :)

@BigDawgsByte - Just added highlighted notes when a chord is pressed to help with learning what notes belong to each chord. That should show up in the next update (about a week out I imagine).

  • Thanks @Adam. That's cool. I'll have a play.

  • Just a quick update to address some of the feedback from Fiddlewax Blue users so far.

    What's New in 1.4

    • Learning hints indicate notes in the active chord as you play.
    • Smoother analog chord and note transitions.
    • Improved audio routing (addresses issue when phone ringer is silenced).
    • Minor bug fixes.

The response to making Fiddlewax Blue free has been pretty incredible, with 40 thousand downloads in the last week. Now I'm super curious to see if it actually makes it into classrooms and gets new musicians excited. :)

  • Thanks Adam! :0) Cant wait to check it out.
