dh-noise tracker

One year ago while on vacation in London I started watching some very interesting and fun ytube tutorials about sample slicing and rolling for drum and bass music. My main interest was with renoise and an amazing talent ‘George from Grooving G’.
Long story short, I only had the iPad with me and I just did not find anything that was just quite right for what i wanted in terms of apps for tracker style slicing and sequencing.
So I made my own app and now I share dh-noise a large and respectful nod to both George and the makers of Renoise.

My app has taken lots of time to write, test and I am very proud to share it here for those who would also like to try it.

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/dh-noise/id6769611341
Or

https://apps.apple.com/app/dh-noise/id6769611341 (non GB store).

Its not free and is quite expensive, but it was a real labour of love and will continue to be updated into the future.

I really wanted to cover everything needed to replicate some of that 90s sampling workflow and I added Akai iso import - I have so many of those old sample CDs which are such great treasures of samples I needed to include that function here.

There is midi out and you can even select triad midi chords with inversions for creating atmospheric backing for your dnb beats.

If you support the app then I hope you enjoy it too

    hm. this looks really solid:)
    like a Renoise Mini...

    David: any video/audio demos?
    thank you!

Not a completed project but a quick proof of concept vid for Apple Connect.
Im once again on vacation in the UK and this time armed with my app  intending to dig deep into my samples iso’s on my iPad pro.

I can only test on my device - iPad pro M4 11inch 1tb. But I worked hard to include a memory monitor on the slicing page so it should be solid. The audio engine is fully native and of the highest quality my skills can produce at this time.

The sample is from Rupert Parkes and if you know your dnb then you know who that is?

Cool passion project, i respect that. Grooving in G is good, but i had to stop watching cause i started GASing for Renoise, lol. But i have toiled a lot with Drambo the past couple years to try and apply some of them principles. It’s been a satisfying challenge and learning experience, enough to keep me from wanting Renoise or any other traditional tracker.

So i don’t recognize this Photek sample you speak of. Or is it from when he released under Aquarius, System X, Sentinel, or Truper maybe? Lol.. did i miss any aliases?
    🤟🤟

  • @Blipsford_Baubie respect your sentiment
If you dont recognise the sample then thats a good thing as I succeeded in doing it some artistic justice and full respect to Rupert.
Renoise mini is a good way to describe this app and it satisfies my creative flow completely. Whenever it needed that next feature I mapped it out and worked hard to make it a reality.
The slicer is particularly more capable than my other app ‘slice’ and you can quantize audio with this version and drag HP to beat markers if you so choose - the tracker also has ‘micro timing’ so the flexability is there to move a pattern note up to +/- 48% of a beat to keep the feel right for some patterns. Slices can be named and muted and moved with fade options in the fade handles.
Full suite of useful effects are built in and slices can be re-ordered and have an appended sample added - great for long samples where you can chop and stack your choosen parts to remove unwanted sample space etc.
Tracker fx per pattern note in the phrase sequencer and then press sync to your host for host control and mixdown etc (noise transport bar hides and you get full host control). I really did do my best to get it right before release.
I was particularly intrigued by the other trackers coincidently released recently - i wanted this app to be special!

I really love the satisfaction that you are feeling from your hard work. I totally get it. That aha moment one feels after tinkering until you make something that works for you, whether it’s work flow related or a tool or both.

Oh ok regarding the Rupert reference, i didn’t realize you made it your own. I was under the impression that you lifted one of his breaks wholesale. Kudos! 🤟

  • Brought used Renoise a few times got a soft spot for trackers !

@dblonde Any plans on adding drag and drop for samples into the app would work really well in Logic Pro.

I’m not a big fan of Apples file system I am forever running into problems importing wav files into apps as they are greyed out etc for no reason they are WAV 16 bit PCM / AIFF and not some incompatible format. One day they work the next nothing and they are local on my iPad.

Just spent 15 minutes now trying to get files into DH Noise with no joy because of Apple File System. Tried to sort the problem via Chat GPT but couldn’t get to the bottom of it before my free session ran out.

Also is the manual available outside the app and or AU. Be handy if it showed in Standalone.

    for iPad

  • Sorry to ask this if the answer is no, but is it vibe coded?

@Jumpercollins hi, no idea how your trying to load samples but it should work perfectly fine? I attach screenshots here how to add your .wav files:

My ipad has 11inch screen which was my only test device, what screen size are your screenshots?
I had not considered drag and drop yet as I wanted to use my ‘audition’ method and it needs apple file browser for that to get started, but happy to look into it at some point in the next update.

If you refund I will give you a free code and you can have it gratis, all I ask is that you help me to iron out any issues that think are needing some attention? I am confident that this app is qood quality and if there are issues I want to fix them. Send me a PM if you like or keep this chat public, your call

  • @mistercharlie thank you for the question, no its not and it has so far been a lot of months of work.

  • edited July 1

Ok just to let people know was user error reference loading files on my behalf the file loading is tucked away refund rescinded !

Please support this developer if you are interested in tracker workflow it really something else to use and the closest you get to using a Polyend Tracker and or Renoise on iPad OS.

Again apologies to @dblonde for jumping the gun regards sample import.

  • @Jumpercollins thank you for confirming - phew  thought there was a coding issue on another device!

Thanks for the answer! After I asked, I spent a while on the site reading through the manual and it's obvious how much you've put into this. Buying now!

  • @mistercharlie cheers, and thank you for your confidence as that means a lot it really does and its the most important endorsement one can ask.
Its clear that the manual needs some additional work so if you have any issues with it then please ask first and I will do my best to answer and support your exploration of noise.
Thank you for your support

It’s the best tracker I’ve found on iPad OS and I’ve tried a few. I really hope the dev makes a standalone version option rather than just AU as having both would be a dream come true.

The dev said it’s quite expensive but I think it’s actually a bargain for the work put in. You’re getting a Polyend Tracker for what the price of a pint and a half of beer !

@dblonde - small suggestion for your initial post: Remove the "gb/" from your App Store URL so that users aren't sent directly to the British App Store, with pricing in £. Without the country code in the URL, users should be directed to their local App Store and expected currency.

I was expecting the price to be higher based on the comments here. Not bad. I'm not into trackers and sample slicers even a little bit, but sure seems like a polished app and a reasonable price to me.

The slicing options and implementation in DH NOISE are second to none. Love the way once you finished polishing your chopping etc the appropriate keys show your slices for playing in. Tried the AU out in a few DAWs and groove boxes, BeatMaker 3, Grooverider 2 and it’s a cool AU to add an alternative workflow into a bigger project.

  • I appreciate that Koala is a sampler and a sequencer, but is it silly to suggest that this app would work really well hosted within Koala? Or would that just be completely unnecessary/pointless?

It works inside Koala as far as I can tell the little time I used it with. Just give you a different workflow.

  • Cool, thanks @Jumpercollins . Guess I don’t really understand exactly what a tracker is…I don’t make “beats”, but I’m always interested in new ways to manipulate and arrange samples. 🙏🏻

It works really well in any AU host that has a piano roll Drambo, Cubasis 3 for example as you can trigger the sample slices outside of the tracker sequencer if you want.

You don’t need to know Hexadecimal stuff in the tracker as far as I can tell to get your head around it unlike some trackers.

  • I'm so eager to try this, but I can't see it in the Spain store. @dblonde Do you know when it will be available there?

  • Hmmm, should be there? Only France I couldnt due to amount of paperwork needed 😟

Interesting, wow, I thought the paperwork would be the same for any EU country. Is that not so? What a royal pita
